    more info on caraxes: caraxas aka “the blood wrym” has a mutation. he is extremely moody, intelligent, very swift and fierce and not well-liked by other dragons except he does have a bond with Syrax (rhaenyra’s dragon). Also he has a deviated septum from a previous battle with his last rider which is why he sounds that way. Daemon and Caraxes are avatars of each other and share a very strong bond.

    Learned from a book reader in another reaction to this episode that the 2 guys that get in a fight during Rhaenyra's 'pageant' were from long feuding families... so they were gonna fight being in the same room whether the Princess was there or not. Thought it was fun information.

    It's beleived that besides then wanting to keep the Dragon Power within the Family, TARGARYENs are attracted to each other in many cases because of their blood magic as a biological side effect. Blood magic which allows them to bond with the dragons.

    Daemon deliberately made sure that both he and Rhaenyra were spotted in that brothel. He also knows that Mysaria is now running the "little birds" and he knows that Otto has spies everywhere all the time, but especially any time Otto is in town. He wanted to make a play for Rhaenyra's hand which would put him closer to the throne, just as Viserys put it together. Unfortunately for Otto, he wasn't looking to get Rhaenyra in trouble and didn't foresee her being caught up in the net he cast for Daemon, so he get's fired on an occasion when he was acting in good faith, which is why he was so disturbed to tell the King about it.
    Just FYI, that scene with V kicking D, and then going to strangle him and pulling the knife on him; those actions weren't in the original script, but Paddy and Matt decided to play it that way in rehearsal, and the director was smart enough to let it stay. Apparently, Paddy and Matt improvised and improved upon many scenes in this series and deserve so much credit for how brilliantly their characters turned out.

    Also, Laenor is a "Ser", not yet a lord and certainly not a prince. The only ones outside of the royal lineage of the Iron Throne that are allowed to call themselves "Prince" are the Martell's of Sunspear (Dorne).

  • @laioren
    @laioren 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    I really love the attention to detail this show puts into the dialog. To throw some analysis at the Rhaenyra and Alicent confrontation scene, Rhaenyra never "technically" lies. Even her claim that "he [Daemon] never touched me," is a euphemism for "we didn't have sex," which is in context for what she's being accused of. It doesn't literally mean, "we never kissed or had any other bodily contact." What Alicent interprets from that interplay, that Rhaenyra claims to still be a "maiden," is Alicent not listening closely enough.
    Alternatively, Viserys becomes convinced they did have sex because Daemon never explicitly denies it, exactly because Daemon wants Viserys to believe she's been "defiled" so that Viserys will agree to wed Rhaenyra to Daemon. However, Daemon never lies in that scene either.
    Even in the real world, people often interpret what others say incorrectly, and people also often say things vaguely exactly to mislead someone. But misleading someone isn't the same as lying.

    • @pr1ncess.d1e.h1gh
      @pr1ncess.d1e.h1gh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's lying by omission which is still lying. Rhaenyra understood that Alicent was really asking if she was still a "maiden", and kept silent about Criston

    • @laioren
      @laioren 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      TL;DR: Alicent makes specific accusations. Rhaenyra truthfully answers those specific accusations. Alicent draws the wrong conclusions from Rhaenyra's answers. Different viewers will interpret the "morality" of what the characters did based on their (the viewers) own values, not on what factually happened in the scene.
      @@pr1ncess.d1e.h1gh this is why writing like this is compelling. Clearly, people draw certain conclusion using their own rubrics for what constitutes what. Here's my thinking; Alicent NEVER asks if Rhaenyra is still a maiden. Every single one of Alicent's sentences is specifically about Rhaenyra having sex with Daemon, and the major point Alicent makes, the crux of her distress, is about Targaryen incest, something that would only be possible in this scenario with Daemon. None of that is projection or drawing conclusions. That's all verifiable from the media.
      Getting away from "facts" and into analysis: Rhaenyra never "lied by omission" (which is an entirely different argument about whether or not that is a "lie," because it wouldn't require a qualifier if it already met the technical definition). Alicent's accusation was specifically stated as Rhaenyra having sex with Daemon, and that Rhaenyra had sex while out on the town with Daemon, neither of which were accurate. Alicent never asks, "So, just to make sure, you're claiming that you've never had sex with anyone, ever, at any time or anywhere, and that you still meet Westrosi cultural expectations of maidenhood?" I would argue that the burden of being accused of something shouldn't fall on the defendant to anticipate all possible permutations or implications of an accusation.
      Rhaenyra is obviously being careful with her wording, and in fact is visibly relieved in the scene when Alicent accuses her specifically of sleeping with Daemon rather than something like "having sex with someone." Rhaenyra ain't no dummy. So at best, someone could accuse her of being "manipulative," knowingly using what she understands of Alicent's thinking and wording to prevent disadvantaging herself. But that pits the moral position of "freely divulging explicit answers to unasked questions" against "is it moral for anyone to even be prying into someone's private business." Being "manipulative" has a decidedly negative connotation in the real world, but I'd argue that there's a giant moral difference between seeking to gain advantage at someone else's expense vs. seeking to defend yourself.
      I'll go back and rewatch that scene (though I've already watched it three times, twice specifically looking for this). As I recall, I don't think there is even a single sentence Alicent speaks which specifically inquires about a general "maiden-ness." It's all about Daemon, Daemon, Daemon (spoken in the Marsha, Marsha, Marsha voice from the Brady Bunch for extra hilarity).

    • @Orwulf
      @Orwulf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yea this is what i really like about the scene too, which it seems like not everyone sees the same way. i think it is really clever writing and important that she isnt actually lying in this scene. you can have qualms with how she handles it of course, and im not going to claim it was a good idea to swear on her mother necessarily, but i think she only did that because at least in her eyes she wasnt lying. i do kinda wish she had said something like "daemon and i didnt have sex" rather than "daemon never touched me" simply so it would be a little less of a gray area for the viewer since you could interpret 'touch me' to cover what they did, and therefore a lie. that may have been the intention to make it a little blurry over whether it was a lie or not though, but i definitely think its important that there at least is AN interpretation where she isnt lying, and alicent just makes a logical fallacy conclusion from it when she retells it later.

    • @laioren
      @laioren 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Orwulf Agreed. And I do believe that was the entire intent of why the dialog was written exactly how it was. The strength of the story here relies on neither Rhaenyra nor Alicent being "good" or "bad." But both of them being "less than perfect" and having "conflicting values, perspectives, and behaviors." And I think the scene does that wonderfully.

    As to the your comments about V's leprosy and the hunt, what Viserys has is an "unhealable" wound which has symbolic significance in the show, as well as medieval mythology in general. In the Arthurian romances, there is the character of the Fisher King, who also suffers from an unhealable wound, and obviously the health of the King is closely tied to the health of the Kingdom. Unless the Holy Grail can be restored through the quest of some brave knight, the King and Kingdom can not be healed and will continue to deteriorate. Unfortunately in Westeros, there is no "grail" (at least not until the events of ASOIAF) so Westeros will continue to "fall apart" over the next two centuries.
    As for the hunt, it's not really a hunt but a quasi-religious/political rite, which is why the King must kill the stag. Symbolically (and I think Viserys knows this in his heart) the stag (king of the forest) is the King, tied up, pulled in all directions, pinned down, and ultimately doomed suffer and to sacrifice his life to the realm. Unfortunately for Viserys, he will not be put out of his misery as quickly and mercifully as the stag.

    I don't think Daemon was planning to self-sacrifice or anything like that. Right before the messenger showed up with news that Viserys was sending support, they were discussing a plan which required someone to bait out the crab feeder's men from their hiding spots. So it was always planned as a bluff and Daemon knew full well that the other men would attack at precisely the agreed-upon point. The men would have known what he was doing the moment he grabbed that white flag. He had no intention of dying.

    King Jaeharys 1st Targaryen, realms most powerful female warrior Queen Visenya Targaryen, Daemon Targaryen, Aemond Targaryen, Aegon 1st Targaryen, Maekar Targaryen, Rhaenys Targaryen (the queen one) and Baelon Targaryen... Starks only have Cregan Stark amongs the top or elite the other Starks are not great warriors...
    fun fact: House Dayne has purple eyes like the Targaryens and Velaryons but hey are not came from Valyria they are oldest house (10 thousand years old) in Westeros and their sword is Dawn. Maesters tells their sword only rival of Valyrian steel sword... so Targaryens and Daynes have many similarities somebodies believe Targaryens (Valyrians) and Daynes are descendents of Great Empire of Dawn (first empire and civilization founded over 20 thousand years before...)
    notice: last Great Empire of the Dawn ruler is Bloodstone Emperor he is killed his sister Amethyst Empress (propably Targaryens and Valyrians ancestor) and started long night 8 thousand years before after long night Valyrians are rised in Essos so he is very important character for universe or white walkers...
    by the way sorry for my bad english its not my first language.

    To be fair,......Rhaenyra didn't lie to Alicent.........
    ......exactly.
    She never had sex with Daemon.
    She never had sex at the brothel.
    And while Daemon did indeed "touch her".......he didn't "touch her",......like that.
    It's just that she (Rhanerya) didn't tell Alicent the whole truth.
    (that she did have sex, only not with Daemon and only not at the brothel).
    Yes, yes, I know.
    A Lie by omission.
    ...yet a truth by precision.

    I think the early episodes everyone tried to understand daemons motives and intentions 😅. But it’s no secret the care he has for family. Plus also a note about the convo viserys had with daemon and how immediately jumping to the conclusion that daemon was just lusting for the crown/thrown when yes it can seem like that but deep down it definitely isn’t when the early convo him and rhaenrya had when watching the play when he was saying himself that aegon needs to be made heir based on the reaction that people had about her being named heir. Daemon understands that political side that the peoples opinion matter as well.
    And also small details in the show is the relationships daemon has with some people. Daemon gave Otto a look in the beginning when he was giving viserys his “crown” obviously daemon knowing that Otto cannot be trusted. 2nd is the one he has with the gold cloaks, the knight that stopped rhaenrya in the streets is a member of the gold cloaks (Harwin “breakbones” Strong) and him still being their commander and seeing rhaenrya made it easy for him not to do anything and let’s her go.
    Anyway love the reactions😅😊

    Daenerys only resisted the fire because of blood magic. Targaryens are not fireproof at all. Some resistance but not fireproof. Maybe that resistance is lack of fear and their history with dragons but it is not fireproof. It is only that one time Daenerys was able to be fireproof.
    The show is going fast and probably the worst thing about it. It is not doing the proper character building about what is going on. The relationship between Viserys and Daemon is better in the show but they could have done more. Alicent and Rhaenyra's relationship is strange compared to the book. They have really smoothed out Alicent's character in the show and I think it hurts the drama a bit more.

    I honestly don't see a problem between Rhaenyra and Daemon's relationship. Sure they're uncle and niece, but they're royals. All noble houses do this. Just last episode Otto suggested the betrothal of Rhaenyra to Aegon her brother, eventhough he suggested it for his own family's gain. As for Rhaenyra and Daemon's age gap, it's slightly greater than Rhaenyra and Aegon's, but significantly less than Alicent and Viserys, and much less than Laena and Viserys would have been. Besides Rhaenyra and Daemon could start producing heirs immediately instead of waiting a decade within which one or both might die. And yes Daemon already has a wife but if Viserys says so be it then it becomes law, even if it's only for this one marriage.

      In this world, no, not a problem. I see it being a great fit, it’s just complicated. He wants the throne, not a wife. She wants to make her own choices, ultimately cant. I think GOT has us conditioned to accept family members being married and giving heirs of the same blood line. Icky in real life, perfectly normal here

    Daemon is the type of character that one episode or even scene you're saying "Wow what a good guy" and the next you're saying "Jesus what was I thinking, what a rotten A-Hole this man is"

    In Game of Thrones we saw incest between Cersei and Jaimes and this is very wrong and not because they are brothers because in the Targaryen family there is a lot of this and it is normal in the family for example Daemon's countries and Viserys they are brothers and they are tired and Viserys is married to his cousin who is a mother and Rhaenyra so incest is super normal but Cersei is Jaimes there yes and wrong Because they are not Targaryen if it was Targaryen then it's ok they can be together but they are not Targaryen that's why na series they hide it because they know it's wrong What are they doing that is incest they can't, but if they were Targaryen then no one is bothered by them but they are not Targaryen so they can't have any relationship it's only Targaryen that can do incest because it is the Targaryen family custom to do incest
    20:05 The Daemon likes Rhaenyra the daemon wanted to show things to Rhaenyra because Rhaenyra doesn't know anything outside the kingdom the daemon's plan I believe the daemon wanted people to see them together and that they say the princess entered a brothel with her uncle so much so the daemon took off rhaenyra's hood and hat before entering the brothel but the daemon gives up and leaves what a shame because he left her alone and rhaenyra and christian's relationship was also wrong because christian he is a knight and he soiled his white tunic, remembering that Christian is older than Daemon, so age doesn't matter in this universe, just as incest doesn't matter because it's normal in the Targaryen family. I'm already used to it because I read George Martin's books and the stories he tells about the Targaryen family all contain incest. Incest is the most normal thing in this universe
    26:26 I didn't like the way Alicent spoke to Rhaenyra if she wants help friend no and just like you approach a friend Alicent is jealous of her Rhaenyra because Rhaenyra slept with whoever she wanted, she doesn't have to sleep with an old man, you'll understand yet but later Alicent is jealous of Rhaenyra's life in the book shows more
    22:32 See the difference in the scenes when the daemon talks to Rhaenyra, talking even though she is married, he can feel pleasure with whoever she wants in the scene with Alicent and viserys Alicent is not feeling pleasure in the scene with Rhaenyra and Daemon Rhaenyra is feeling pleasure even if it was the kiss but she likes it more after she sleeps with Christian and she feels pleasure and you can see
    27:38 In the throne scene, when the daemon says that Viserys can do whatever he wants, because he is the king, he rules over him and the law, he is a Targaryen, this is true, as it is also true when Viserys tells Alicent that the daemon and Rhaenyra are dragons are restless this is also true.

    Angela : "Considering what Laenor looks like....he's dark skinned with light hair, and she's light-skinned with light hair...if they have a baby that is light-skinned with dark hair, it would look very suspicious...."
    Indeed.
    That would look very very strange indeed. Perish the thought that such a thing could ever happen.
    Drink that moon-tea Rhaenyra!
    Although......
    There is such a thing as a recessive gene (blond parents have been known to have brunette babies......and vice versa).
    Plus.....Laenor is only half-black. (.....his mother is Rhaenys and a Targaryan like Rhaenrya).
    Which means his children with Rhaenyra would be three-quarters white and more likely look white-presenting (and more likely resembling Rhaenyra in skin-tone than Laenor).
    A lot of people didn't get this but we have real life examples in our own world.
    Prince Harry (full white) and Meghan Markle (half-white, half-black biracial) have children who are both white-presenting and both redheads and favor their father's look and (very fair) complexion than their mother's looks (particularly her Afro-features and more olive- skin tone.).
    And then there's also this to consider...
    A dark -haired Targaryan isn't exactly that big of an oddity in the Game of Thrones universe,.....as we came to see in the last series.

    I would love for people to put themselves in Rhaenyra's situation for this episode and ask what exactly was she supposed to do. Daemon gets her super horny, then leaves her, so this 18 year old wants to have sex with Criston Cole. She is then accused of sleeping with Daemon by Alicent, her former best friend, recently made up, who is married to her Dad the King. If Rhaenyra tells the truth she would lose her position as heir so she really did the only thing she could to maintain her position and I respect her immensely for it.

    It doesn't matter if Rhaenyra lied to Alicent. Alicent was the first who betrayed her by seducing Viserys though it's her father's planned. Rhaenyra doesn't trust alicent anymore that's why she never tell the truth to Alicent. Waiting for your next reaction, so excited.

      let's maybe not say the 15yo girl "seduced" the grown ass man, though. all she did was show basic kindness to him. and she was clearly uncomfortable with the prospect of marrying him, as evidenced by her picking her nails whenever the topic of his marriage was brought up.

    What I find so interesting about this series is the choices being made for these women that they don't have much of a say in. There are so many consequences to those choices that now looking back are massively catastrophic. It's what I really love about the smaller scale of this show. It's small moments and choices that make some of the biggest problems. I will definitely elaborate more once you watch those episodes because especially for Rhaenyra, her life is wildly complicated for many reasons that could have been avoided had some of these men made different choices.
    While I don't love that Rhaenyra hides the truth from Alicent, I definitely understand why. We've seen Alicent be quite judgemental and not very understanding of Rhaenyra's need to rebel against tradition. Alicent only lives for tradition and rule following. They're sort of two sides of the same coin.
    Also, in terms of Rhaenyra saying "touched" she means they didn't have sex. So technically, not a lie. And telling anyone about Criston would result in him being sent to the wall or killed. She's kind of in a corner there. It's hard because she's not quite comfortable with Alicent any more because she's not just her friend anymore. She's the Queen and Rhaenyra knows how much Alicent bows to tradition. Being honest with her could get people hurt or possibly killed. It's tough for everyone. I'd like to believe Alicent would understand, but we've also seen her fold under pressure from her father. Just a crap situation.
    And while Otto was telling the truth, it's not that Viserys doesn't believe him. We see that he does, the issue is his obvious pushing of Aegon to rule. Pushing Alicent to wed Viserys, trying to wed Rhaenyra to A BABY, now having the heir followed. Viserys isn't dumb. He's nonconfrotational for sure, but he's a smart man and now he's putting the pieces together. Otto isn't let go for telling the truth, he's let go because his agenda is so clear.
