Ruth I like this one. Any chance of you showing how to put the PATHCONTAINS together with a filter like you did with the Top N? I'm thinking of org structure, it'd be nice to see how you could select a person in an org and see everyone who rolls up to them.

You just solved a particular problem. I have been trying to work out a way to iterate down through boms to find if software sits in a particular bom. This will work.

I may have drawn a blank Ruth. I will keep trying. My issue is that the Component are used in multiple Parents and the bom hierarchy has up to 6 levels. In short, what I am trying to do is to create a query that flags a Parent that has certain Software down any level in the hierarchy. I will keep trying unless you have a suggestions (like give up) :)

Curbal, I found a nice solution on BIAccountant blog from last year. Quite complex PQ with some trick M that iterates down the levels. Still stress testing but seems to work.

Hi Ruth! thank you for this video. I've followed every step and everything worked perfectly regarding the columns. However, when I go back to the visuals' pane, I do not see any hierarchy and therefore I cannot use it for creating drill-down visuals. Please help!

Hi Ruth! I think this solution here only works when you have just one parent per child. I need to do a Bill of materiales where there are many childs that are used on multiple parents (For example a model of screw -Child- that is used in lots of final products -Parents-, or the delivery box -We use the same one for multiple products-). If you do know how to do it, could you make a video about it? Thank you and thanks for this great channel!

Hi Ruth...You are excellent... your videos are very informative and unique
    I have a query...in Parent child Dax
If we want to repeat emp key and Mgr key...then there is sn error.
Issue is...that employee A is reporting to emp x..
But now he is reporting to Emp Z
We want to keep both values.
    How can we solve this..

Hey Ruth, is it possible to view parent & child in same visual (no drilling) and the parent showing sum of all its children instead of only the selected children? For example, if i want to see the count of employees in Cities like London, Leeds, Birmingham and also in all of England and Europe in same visual with no drill down

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Try using the matrix visual with the stepped option on (or off can’t remember which)

    112|23|18|1
As per my understanding when we use PATH function, 112 denotes the Org Lvl 1 and 23 denotes Org Lvl 2 and so on.
Can this be bi-directional like below,
    1|18|23|112
1 denotes last Org Lvl N and 18 denotes Org Lvl N-1 and so on. Basically I want to have Child-Parent Hierarchy. The reason he if one persons belongs to 2 difference regions how we can take care of this using PATH function.
Basically what I need is Child-Parent relationship instead of Parent-Child relation ship.

Hi, you forgot to show the values associated with the hierarchy. Do you simply attach the values and it will just show the values in a collapsible manner?

Very good video! Thank you so much!
Suggestion: It is not very easy to follow a data set that has computer-like values (MMK115/1). It would be better if the values were more human readable such as CEO, Vice President, Manager, Employee etc. for someone who does not even know what is a parent or child function.
    Other than that, thank you!

Hi Ruth, very clear and crisp explanation. I am working on developing a data warehouse on manufacturing process and was struggling to get real world example on product traceability. Whenever search for parent child hierarchy topic most of the time we come across organization kind, but this one I could relate very well. Thanks for that.

Hello, how do you use the DAX hierarchy in the report view? I've created a 4 level hierarchy using DAX and was expecting to be able to drag this into a report but it doesnt show in the report view.

    Hello Ruth,
Thank you for your awesome DAX Fridays! video series and other intermediate Power BI videos, keep them coming!
I have a question regarding Hierarchy which I can't wrap my head around. Hopefully you, or anyone in the Power BI community, could help me understand this.
I can see how powerful utilizing Hierarchy could help in modelling data better and providing a fast and efficient way of retrieving data with DAX. (Especially when dealing with BOM data sets)
However, I have confusion over how hierarchy works over these 3 videos:
    1) Creating and working with hierarchies in Power BI (3-11g): th-cam.com/video/q8WDUAiTGeU/w-d-xo.html
    2) Create Hierarchies in Power Query: th-cam.com/video/oEOaqyaZTZw/w-d-xo.html
    3) DAX Fridays! #20: Parent and Child Functions -Hierarchies: This Video.
    My confusions are:
    1) Does all the above 3 videos provide the same outcome, just with different methods? If so, wouldn't (1) be a simpler form of creating hierarchy groups in Data Modeling and provide filtering capabilities when using the 'CALCULATE()' function?
    2) How can I use any of these above methods, create a hierarchy data model, and utilize other DAX functions such as 'RELATED()', 'RELATEDTABLE()', 'USERELATIONSHIP()' etc. in the 'CALCULATE()' function filtering ability to calculate what I want?
    3) Does it mean that having Hierarchies will eliminate my need to calculate certain results because of it's dynamic data drilling down abilities?
Hope that I am phrasing my question in a fathomable way. Thank you very much for your wonderful work and I am eager to receive your response on this as it definitely will tremendously help me in my work to create data models which DAX functions will shine!

Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed comment!
My time to answer it is unfortunately a bit limited, but think of it like this, different scenarios will require different approaches and what the Power BI team does is giving us different tools to solve them.
All methods are valid depending on your situation.
For a more detailed answer, I encourage you to re-post this in the power bi community where others can also chip-in.
      Thanks again!
      /Ruth
