You are right usefulmusic! This video is from a telvisionshow that was recorded for Dutch television in the spring of 1986. I was only 24 years of age! I'm probably older now that Eddie was then!! We play with the Metropool Orkest, directed by the late Rogier van Otterloo.
I have beenplaying clarinet for 9 years, and am a decent musician, this video almost made me cry. I love the style of music, and the musicianship is amazing. I love the crystal mouthpiece too, I play on one too.
In this video not only Eddy Daniëls with our Dutch world-clarinet-star Bernard Berkhout (now family Doctor in the Netherlands) but also Rogier van Otterloo (died in 1988 much too young) as Director of the Metropole Orchestra) the "Leonard Bernstein of the Netherlands". I had the honour & the pleasure to play with both: Rogier and Bernard.
Dit was in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam . Toen ik ooit aan hem vroeg om op straat te spelen kreeg ik de wind van voren . Hij zei onze generatie heeft deze muziek naar het concertpodium gebracht
Both are very accomplished and it's unfair to compare them. They each take a different approach. Whether you like one or the other is a matter of personal taste. If forced to compare, I would say Eddie's playing is more controlled and he physically moves less, whereas Bernard is more dramatic in his playing and physical movements, pushing the envelope of control. Their articulation is quite different. Without visual cues such as video, it would be their articulation that makes each distinctive.
Thank you very much for uploading this one. Interesting to note that in the comments everybody is talking about Mr. Daniels..... To my ears Mr. Berkhout plays even better in this Benny Goodman swing style. Of course I'm not allowed to say (or even think)such a thing, but it is my honest opinion. Whereas Mr Daniels is a bit further in harmonic sophistication, I prefer the drive, fire and tone of Mr. Berkhout, who also finishes his phrases better. Thanks again, very interesting video!
Excellent work from both artists, but Bernard swings better. Excellent control of the high register and very melodic ad libs! Thanks to Bernard for posting this video! the very best to all mitch
beside the obvious difference in approach and period interest the most obvious difference between the two is that eddie has been at the game longer. both are great players. great vid thanks for posting
Honestly saying, Bernard has variety of style in playing for he gave all his best, while Eddie built a constant sounds by playing some several passages that can identify himself from the rest of the players.
@Tarcila62078 You would have been at the Nalen jazz club in Sweden in 2001 when Eddie duel with the Swedish clarinet legend and Europe's greatest jazz clarinet player ever, Putte Wickman. Putte Wickman took out Eddie Daniels total that night, and I was not the least bit surprised. Have you never heard of Putte Wickman before so I really think that you should do it! He was much better on the clarinet than Eddie Daniels in every way. It is a shame that hardly anyone in the US don't know him.
And I was only 50 then. Ah, to be 24 again - or at least sleep with someone who is. I am forever amazed how most Dutch people speak and write English better - more accurately, intelligibly and grammatically - than most English people. As a curiosity you might let to check out 'Graham Lyons" "Lyons C Clarinet".
There is no doubt these musicians are brilliant to say the least, but Benny Goodman did it first, and brought great popularity to the clarinet. When all is said and done , he set the standard for jazz clarinet.
both are good only diference if you notice is that one plays more jazz...and bernard is more of a dixie guy ..two different aproaches both sound great..but in my personal taste bernard is on my side
wow. i used to think no one can compare to eddie daniels. now that i see this video where bernard is just amazing!! better than daniels actually. it makes me wonder how many clarinet players out their probaly are better than eddie daniels that just are not as well known for whatever reason.
How is one better than the other? They are very different, but both at the top of their game. This is not Olympics - who gets to the finish line faster or jumps higher.

Absolutely beautiful, artistic work by Eddie and Bernard! I hope they made more of these sessions.
Dat deden ze niet lang en vaak genoeg...

The musical "communication" between both guys is awesome - definitely a classic recording.....

Eddy sounds great on this, Bernard just as good too. Both virtuoso Jazz Clarinet guys.

I agree
It puzzles me why you don't give information on the orchestra and the date.
