So both humans and ants are social animals that suffer chronic sleep deprivation? I wonder if other social animals have problem with a lack of sleep too.
It's always nice to be on a Science-based channel with people who also appreciate all forms of life. I get sick of all those comments with people complaining when someone has the decency to at least show some level of compassion for an insect. :P
On a serious note, it wouldn't surprise me if web-spinning spiders probably do sleep the majority of their life. No point in staying alert and awake when all you have to do is sit there until something lands in your web.
i wouldve imagined they didnt sleep because they are so small so they use less energy. making it so that they gain enough energy when other things happen and it makes up for the energy that they lose making ti so they didnt need to sleep. which is why you almost never see a bug/arachnid in a fight and get tired after a while
v can see all colours. the fact is, they all form a part of a larger electromagnetic spectrum. v cannot see infrared, ultraviolet, microwave, n radio etc.
+Cat 54 Wrong answer. We do know what colors we can't see. We have sensitive equipment that measure them. We can see all the millions of colors in the visual spectrum and most people can even tell all of these colors apart. The things we can't see are in the electromagnetic spectrum below 390 nano-meters and above 700 nano-meters.
Basically to sum it up,russian scientists make people go mad after making them have sleep deprivation for hours and hours until they become a disfigured alien looking thing. See? It doesn’t even look as bad lol
I've seen three flies sleeping in a month. I caught a fruit fly sleeping. And it slept for eight hours before taking off. Didn't move much but it was kinda interesting waking up in the middle of the night to see him sleeping. Then I caught a house fly snoozing. I caught it and it startled pretty hard. Then last night i caught another fly sleeping it's head was on the table. I thought it was dead. When I realized it wasn't dead it stumbled and stumbled before falling back asleep. It eventually fell to it's side and it's legs were twitching. I could only wake him in the dark, he'd get uncomfortable and start moving. It was so tired it let me pick it up and put it near a lamp. Little guy slept till ten this morning then started flying around trying to get out. It was oddly cute.
That is interesting. I noticed this with moths. Moths are my favorite insects. They are nocturnal, like bats and owls. During the night they fly around doing their thing. That is also when they get in the house and fly around artificial lights. The poor things get so confused and lost. During the day, sometimes I even see moths in the house. They seem to be sleeping. They don't have eyelids to close, but they do seem dormant. A moth will just stand in the same spot for long periods of time. When I poke it, it takes more prodding than normal to make it move. It is as if the moth was sleeping. Then it gets groggy when it is suddenly woken. Then it gets a bit more active, and it can even fly. It would probably try to find another place to sleep. I just had a sleep rebound. I stayed up really late last night watching Rainbow Dash episodes on My Little Pony. Then I sleped for much of the day today. When I am not sleeping deeply, I can control dreams, like a daydream. This is outside REM sleep. So I had those dreams be about Rainbow Dash in the Wonderbolts.
Amarildo Júnior I really hope you are joking, i'm not sure why you got likes on your comment. If you took any biology class you would learn that bacteria do not have a central nervous system, they do not sleep. They are simply a bunch of continuously living chemical reactions which will continue reacting no matter what until the bacterium dies. image.slidesharecdn.com/classiii-131120051309-phpapp02/95/bacterial-morphology-and-classification-8-638.jpg?cb=1384926021

I knew insects sleep! because my teacher gave me mealworms for 2 months, 1 of my mealworms larva wasnt moving at all! i thought it was dead, so i tried throwing it at the dustbin. then i noticed its moving again! im grade 4:) so insects do sleep!
The same reason people's voice sounds different from person to person, slight variation in our organic matter. Also, the way you sneeze is completely based on the fact that you make up your own way of sneezing, some people like to release much of their energy into a sneeze, while others slightly hold off their sneeze. Proof of this can be tested next time you are about to sneeze, try sneezing in a slightly different manner, you will see different results. Much of what causes different sounds though is caused by the slight organic matter differences though. At any given time, you are most likely just using one nostril, people have different constriction sizes in their nostrils giving off different sounds. Because the Larynx (throat air passage) is connected with our sinus system, a sneeze will release air from the mouth and a human will often make a vocal sound at the same time. When sneezing you are hearing more than just air, you are hearing the individual's voice. Hope this helps. :)
i figured insects slept more than a a decade ago... i sneaked up on some flies that were on the clothes line at night. got really close, until they awoke. since i did not touch them or made any noise, i suspected they saw my finger. so, thinking about it now, their compound eyes are like ears to them, its always receiving general information, and when something really note worthy happens, they become conscious to it, and wake up.
I heard that trees and plants and other vegetation also sleep at night. Can you make a video about that? Also is it true that they release more CO2 at night??
Spiders do seem to go dormant for hours. I mean I assume its some kind of sleep. Otherwise why are they just sitting there not moving at all for long periods of time. Like I could understand it if they were sat on a web waiting to ensnare something but often thats not the case. You just have have them sitting in a corner of a room. I have noticed they can be startled. Like turning on a light in a room will cause the spider to freeze until it feels comfortable enough to carry on moving.
I was messing with s fly that was sleeping so hard it was like it was dead. The entire night the thing could barely walk or move without falling over. The next day, the little bastard was up and buzzing around. That’s when I realized it had been sleeping the night before. It was so tired I was able to move the fly without it flying away
I think moths and spider sleep. When ever they're in my room they just stay in a corner of my room for days until they move somewhere else and get food.
Came here after I saw what looked like a cricket sleeping. MF was sleeping lying upside down and when I gave it a nudge it made a slight noise, moved a little flew to other side of room and slept again.

RIP for those fruit flies who died for science
rip harambe
Yeah even though I have no qualms with killing a fly outright, I feel a little bad that they had to die of sleep deprivation. RIP.

When he said spiders are always awake and watching... I almost freaked out.
Sounds like they did some Nazi-like sleep experiments on the insects :(
russian sleep experiment... aaaw hell nope! nooope! if you're referring to a certain creepypasta... i hate you for reminding me!

Good god, I HATE moths. Disgusting creatures. The large buzzing ones especially freak me out if they manage to get in and fly around my head.

Watching Julian talk about sleep makes me sleepy < : D Good 'cause it's already 3 am
The question "do insects sleep?" Popped into my head after watching a short on fluorescent fish brain.
Why is a day split into 24 hours and an hour into 60 minutes? Also, why do analogue clocks show only 12 hours?
that's actually an interesting question

Sleepy bees doing a sleepdrunk dance when tired? ok :p so now is the question what do insects dream about :D
Question. So I've heard most tiger beetles are diurnal(hopefully I spelled that right). Does this mean they just take regular naps throughout the day?
Didn't realise I was was watching an ad for a crappy mattress the whole time
I think moths and spider sleep. When ever they're in my room they just stay in a corner of my room for days until they move somewhere else and get food.
"Spiders aren't insects, they never sleep, they're always watching... kidding!!... probably..."
Here in the Philippines, every morning, I always see flies floating still in the air around 5-6 a.m.. Are they also sleeping that way?

Insects sleeping was not so much as a suprise to me .but fish sleeping was a suprise.
worker bees don't have brethren. All worker bees are female.
Man those flies are probably going to beat the scientist ass when they go to sleep.
Q: how do dogs (animals) stay alert while they're sleeping?
Wow I was literally thinking about this the other night... spoooookyyy
I´m here because I found a mosquito behind my shelf, and didn't react to me waving my hand... I killed it afterwards.
Well I actually have wondered and I actually have researched if bugs sleep. Yeah that's how weird my brain is
I know flies sleep. I've seen flies just chillin' on a wall and I can walk right up to them. Give 'em a firm poke and they fly off.
