In the area where I’m from ( I am a yooper! :) we call it Nisu. This is very similar to my family’s recipe but in my own person preference I like quite a bit more cardamom. I add a bit of cinnamon in mine as well. I’m trying to perfect it to my liking! I used whole milk last time but, I may try evaporated milk or even a half can of condensed milk this weekend. Maybe even some raisins if im feeling rebellious! My grandma use to make some very thick strong coffee and put 5-8 tablespoons of it in a cup and add equal amounts of sugar until dissolved and then brush it over the top when it gets out! I’m pretty young myself but I think it’s important to carry on family traditions!
This looks great! I'm making this for work tomorrow. I have some good friends who are from Finland...Wait til they find out what I baked! Thank you for this video. Love it.
FINNISH PULLA IS THE BEST SWEET BREAD IN THE ENTIRE WORLD...BELIEVE ME. ONCE YOU HAVE TASTED IT, THERE IS NOTHING IN THE WORLD TO COMPARE..IT IS THE BEST.
I’ve watched this a few times now and it is one of my favorites for making pulla. I love the different way of braiding and the filling. I made the filled braid in 2011 the first time I watched the video and am making it again today. I like the idea of adding apples, I may try that today also. Thanks for sharing this. Hope you have been back to visit Finland since your time there as an exchange student.
This is a wonderful recipe. I have made Pulla bread several times now and always use this recipe. I really like the simple braiding technique and the filling that many other Pulla bread recipes do not have.
MyFinnish Pulla bread turned out perfect using this recipe. I was a little confused by the butter directions but ended up halving the stick of butter for the dough and using the other half for the filling. I captured the recipe by stopping the video in the places the ingredients were listed.
When she rolles it out that way I was thinking "what is she doing" but it looked really good at the end I shall counter challenge and reply to this video soon!
rolled version propably means cinnamon roll (korvapuusti). But yeah the "ball" and pigtail I would say are the most "real" versions. But I also love rahkapulla and hate rusinapulla. There are so many versions that everyone can make their own ;)
Thanks for the response! If you see them, ask for me? Meanwhile, I'll be scouring the interwebs. Oh! Just made this recipe! Turned out beautifully! Thanks!
Hello , I'm currently making this recipe. How long is the second rise? Hopefully someone will see this. I'm making this for my husband. We haven't had this since his Finnish mother passed. Hoping to surprise him! 😊
Thank you for the request for clarification. A melted half stick of butter is used for the dough. The other half stick of butter is used to prepare the filling. Hope that helps - let us know how it turns out! :)
Use the other half for the filling. Just use common sense, that it's not too running, nor sticky dry. Just start with the amounts she said, then later you can innovate :) More butter, more yummy - and fatty. Like with the eggs & sugar, white flour - adding the sugar and milk or cream from the coffee this is eaten with - healthy and delicious weight bomb. No diet food, heh!
It's not really a "breakfast treat". It can be eaten at any time of the day but it's not considered "proper food", the kind one should eat for breakfast. Maybe after eating real bread in the morning...

Emilie, where did you get your measuring cup that you use to parse out the flour and the spoon for the cardamom? I want some!
Thank you for your question. Wish I had more info to share. This measuring set was a gift from a family friend.
