i remember this being played before tv went off air (dont remember which station/network) every night. I had forgotten about this, as i was so very young when it aired. fast forward some twenty years to when I was on my first flight. first time inside an airplane. we went thru some clouds, and this all came so vividly back to me..the music, the plane, the mans voice. Not the whole thing though, just the words "i reached out and touched..the face of God. i remember being amazed that it came to me after having no recollection of it at all. That was the frist time(and last i thing) that i had totally forgotten something that completely, then had it come back to me that suddenly over seeing the cloud from inside the plane ..they looked so similar to the ones in this video. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I remember my mother and i discussing this. then later, an uncle and I discussing the memory of this.
Thanks for posting this; I haven't seen it on TV in so many years. I first read it in a obituary my granny kept in her Bible. It was the death notice of an air force cousin killed while fighting the Germans over France. Rest in peace,Gil.
Thank you for saving this and sharing. What makes this even more special is, there were several diffrent one's used across the nation, but this is the one that originated from KCRA in Sacramento... the one I grew up with. The video, the music, the voice, the poem.... It gave me goosebumps as a kid, and still does today. Thank you, again.
I'm like dwebbjohnson. I so remember this film when I was a kid. My mom, who was an English teacher so wanted an audio recording of it, but we never could catch it with the recorder. Thanks so much for finding this piece of film.
This is the version (F-104) I learned, memorized and recited at the end of the broadcast day (on a school night) back in the '70's. Same inflections, pauses, - every nuance. On my little B&W TV.
What an amazing tribute to your Great Uncle. My Great Uncle is buried at Verdun having died 10 days before the end of the war, so I'm touched by the experiences of WWI (I visited his grave in 2005). I was also just thinking of William Conrad this week, so thank you for connecting him to this film. You must be very proud. As a night owl, this film, the poem, and the exquisite music were with me throughout my school years.
I haven't heard since I was about 5 years old. It would run early Sunday morning on WCKT Channel 7 (now WSVN) before the cartoons. It still brings me to tears to this day. Thank you for finding it.
Thanks for uploading. I was looking for this. Long ago there was a young boy who would drift off to sleep as this sign off played and dream dreams full of wonder at the magnificence of creation and his place in it. I wonder whatever happened to that boy?
This is the original... it will never be duplicated! I have a copy (sound on film) 16mm of this, that has never been played. Two copies were given to me by an air force recruiter when I was mgr. of a TV station many many years ago. it is still in the original package.......
I know of no other spoken poem that so moves my emotions as this one does. It brings me to tears whenever I hear it - especially the very last line. It reminds me of my dad who flew in World War II in the Army Air Corp. The last line is now true for my dad!
Don't forget Sunday nights either Justin! I seem to recall them using it on channel 3 out of champaign Il. as well. I always loved watching this. Couldn't find it until now. I also found the Singing Sergeants version of the Lord's Prayer too. Great stuff! Sad to see it go.
I was just thinking about this. It was something special between my father and I when I was a boy. It was used by the Armed Forces Network in Germany as the signoff when I was there as a kid and my father was a Colonel in Frankfurt. This played out and then the anthem and then the test screen until morning. I cannot believe that this video is out here.
@everythinguwanted - This was played in Miami in the late 60s on WAJA 23 (now WLTV, Spanish). In fact, once it was slipped in, in what was supposed to be a commercial break! WAJA was freaky, take my word.....many old reruns with scratches and spots all over the film.
Very cool. TV stations had a truly local flavor at the time. Sacramento was an Air Force and Aerojet town back then, and KCRA's choice reflects that aspect. Thanks for posting!
This was part of the standard Saturday night sign-off for Peoria's Ch. 31 back in the mid-60s, followed by a video of the USAF's Singing Sergeants performing "The Lord's Prayer". How our nation has changed since then!
@cd637299 Thanks for replying. I got goose bumps and teary eyed watching this again. Why the tears? Because if you grew up in the early 60's, you had something to believe in.... that right, would always eventually prevail. To me, the military was emblematic of that notion, however naive it may have been. I'm not so sure anymore.
Too young to remember this version. I only remember the one with the T-38 Talon ( or was it an F5A?). Thanks for posting. I like one of the previous comments which suggested a further updated version featuring an F22 or maybe a B2 Spirit.
@Chattanoogaben True, although other versions were filmed, the original can NEVER be duplicated! (Although it would be awesome if the Air Force made a "21st Century" version -- featuring the F-22 Raptor!!)
I would sneak and stay awake until sign-off just so I could catch this poem. Always wondered about the physics behind sticking your hand out at 30,000 feet to touch god's face.
Is it possible there is a version between this and the 1972 F5 Tigershark(?) version. When I was growing up in the 60's in Miami we had just 2 stations (CBS&NBC) and one or both signed off around 9 or 10pm with something a lot closer to the 1972 version. But I would have been in college then and this goes back to early to mid 60's. This video is unrecognizable so it would have to be in between or the '72 was shown before that. I used to sneak out of bed just to watch it. Thanks for posting.
@hatoriROX Cant be, because when I heard this version thats exactly what I thought to myself...he would have been perfect for this reading. It does sound a little like him, though doesnt it.

OMG. I REMEMBER THIS AND IT GIVES MY GOOSE PUMPS. I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS IN OVER 40 YEARS
Those were the good ole days.

I remember this. I was just a kid laying on my stomach watching TV when this played. Wow, does this bring back the memories.

I had to memorize this poem for school. Gives me chills to this day.

awesome !!
Just saw this on MAD MEN and had to know more
great submission airboyd!!
Great to see this on TH-cam. I saw this film in a movie theater and it convinced me to join the Air Force. Best investment I ever made with my life.

Some tv stations would play a video of a F-104 Starfighter with William Conrad reading the poem "High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee.

On May 27th my mom was called Home by God and now sees Him face to face. Lord, thank you for dying for me and my family and for eternal life!

Brings back old memories...This is a great country. One worth it all.

Always love this and could listen so often. Thanks for the great video!
For those of us who remember TV used to shut down for a few hours each day>>>

MY FAVORITE AND WHY NOT SHOW IT INSTEAD OF A COMMERCIAL
@Chattanoogaben

thanks for sharing this =P

The credits misspell the last name of the author as "McGee".
Great poem and video. Can anyone tell me the name of the piece of music played under the video? It was just perfect for this poem.

I'd love to know also. It's so romantic and beautiful.

another win for airboyd!!!!
Can anyone tell me the name of that beautiful piece of music played under the poems' narration? I've been trying to find out for the longest time.
@OBDjFH05 There's always someone, lol.
Airboyd, any idea exactly what year that this was produced? I do remember it....see my comment below.
Does anybody know the name of the piece of music in the background?
Isn't there one with a F15
Whose voice is the narration? Who provided the audio narration of the poem?
Flying rocket F-104
🇺🇸🌃🇺🇸
Who is the autor?
