unfortunately their tour songs had nothing to do with the typical Mr.Bungle jazzy/metal :( i was extremely hyped when i read about their reunion but i was disappointed with their current stance....no wind instruments no ska no jazz no experimentation....i dont even get why Ian is in the rhythm guitars....they sound like old punkcore
always loved everything that Mike Patton did - love his experimental art - but of everything he has done - there is no denying for me that the Mr Bungle three album catalog will always remain the crown jewel.
Totally agree but I’m not a fan on the new Bungle. They went pretty much thrash metal all the way and probably won’t ever play any of the previous 3 albums live. Wish the whole original band would reunite, even for one world tour.

Even Adult Themes For Voice? A little bit of that album goes a LONG way. I feel like you’d lose your mind if you listened to it all the way through in one sitting.
This came out on August 13, 1991, I can still remember sitting on my singer's (at the time) couch on that day after practice and listening to this for the first time. From the moment I heard this, it changed everything about music for me. I have never been blown away by a band like that since. Great reaction you nailed it! I wish I could hear them for the first time again.
I think I herd it a year or so later and it utterly changed my thoughts on music and musicianship. Funk, rock, metal, jazz, all became a fusion and that came to every band I played in. I also smoked way to much pot listening to them. 😂
A friend and I went to see Mr. Bungle live knowing absolutely nothing about them or their sound other than (1) Mike Patton wore a Mr. Bungle shirt in the Epic video (which had come out not too long before) and (2) it was his high school band. It not only changed my perception of music from that day onward, it changed my perception of art. For their last song, they basically played the audience by freezing onstage halfway through a riff and just letting the guitar feedback while they stood stone-still for seriously ~15 mins. I watched the crowd go from cheering and hooting to getting uncomfortable to yelling insults and throwing things. After taking it way farther than you'd ever guess a band would, the guitarist fell over, the rest of the band walked off stage, and Mike jumped through the drum kit and landed in a heap of knocked-over drums and cymbals. And that was the end of the show. I bought the Mr Bungle self-titled immediately and played it on repeat for years, followed by pretty much every project Patton has done since.
This is the first "reaction video" to a Bungle track I've seen where it's clear the reviewer outright appreciates well played, produced, written, etc. music, regardless of the genres they personally like. Well done. Bungle isn't for everyone, but there is no denying their talent. Been a fan of theirs since the early '90's.
You should listen to Directors Cut by one of Mike Pattons other projects called Fantomas. It's basically a covers album,but not like any other covers album ever made. I played it to a music teacher once and he thought it was a dozen different bands on the album.

Allot of major label pressure from Warner Bros was well documented in FNM led to their breakup and I'm sure Bungle was the same. FNM made tons of money... Bungle sold squat for records so the pressure was double I'm sure. I feel like now with being on Ipecac records skys the limit with direction they can go. Right now they are laser focused on their San Francisco Bay Thrash roots, but maybe some Avant Garde Jazz and Ska might be right around the corner.
They’ve said time and again that Warner Bros basically just ignored them instantly and only cares about FNM. And Trey, Trevor, Patton and Bar have way too much integrity to the music to bend to a suggestion to be more profitable. Fucking lol

thats Mike Patton singing, pre Faith No More. way before their time. the 3 albums are drastically different. its best to absorb the whole album self titled is a deliberately abrasive ska.funk.metal, blender disaster. total genius discovolante is more avant jazz, metal, with moments of thrash and electronic, some dark folk sounds California is a Bungle version of Pop. some wonderful vocal work. you really should do "Carry Stress in the Jaw", i think you'd love it. then something from California, Ars Moriendi is my fave. i wouldnt write them off totally, the band recently reformed to do a show featuring their more punk metal stuff pre self titled album "the raging wrath of the easter bunny" with guest musicians Dave Lombardo(Slayer) & Scott Ian (Anthrax) if you like Bungle & specifically Mike Patton, he features in these bands: Faith No More Loveage Tomahawk Peeping Tom Fantomas Dead Cross Mondo Cane Patton/Kaada General Patton vs Executioners various solo/collabs you can track down inc. Well put. Just a little correction: this album by Mr Bungle was released by a big label only because Mike Patton was already vocalist for Faith No More "hit" album "The Real Thing" 2 years prior. So it's not really pre FNM. :)
Mr. Bungle was Patton's 1st band. Jim Martin ( FNM) had a copy of Bungle's demo and brought it to the rest of the guys in FNM when they were looking for a new singer. After the success of Patton joining the band he was able to get Bungle a record deal.
Just saw Mr Bungle at Sick New World in Vegas. They're so incredible. I love them, and Patton will live on in whispered fables, hushed tones spoken only by those with the most eccentric of tastes.
Best Patton bands that aren't faith no more, Bungle, Peeping Tom, Lovage, Tomahawk, Gen.Patton vs the Xecutioners. The man is a workhorse, and one of the best singers of any genre.
Nobody gives Lovage any love. It's simultaneously both: A) not even in my "top 10 projects Patton's been involved in", yet B) still in my "top 10 things to ever happen, ever"
This album was one of my absolute favourites in my early teens in the early 90s (still is), and I so envy you this first listen - especially that you have so much knowledge to inform your response. It was an absolute joy to see you discover and appreciate it. :D

I sometimes wish I could listen to Mr. Bungle for the very first time again. The first song I heard was Quote Unquote and I was absolutely blown away and that continued as I started discovering more of their song's.
Mr. Bungle aren't around anymore but they Did have a sold-out reunion show earlier this year featuring Scott Ian from Anthrax on guitar & Dave Lombardo from Slayer on Drums. I'd definitely recommend listening to 'Squeeze Me Macaroni' off of the same album, it's my personal favorite song of theirs (super funky & quirky). Their later work is more "accessible" so you might wanna check those out for contrast. Also do yourself a favor and check out the bands Nuclear Rabbit & Screaming Headless Torsos, they have a similar Avant-Garde/Funk Rock sound from around the same era, I'd even lump Primus into this category lol (I always listen to all 4 of them together). Nuclear Rabbit's bassist Jean Baudin is rad & plays on an 11-string.
I can't escape these comparisons. 🤣 I personally don't see it but this isn't the first time that I've been told I kinda look like someone and I don't see the resemblance either.
This album completely changed my outlook on music!!!! From being just a simple metalhead, Patton's many projects opened up my mind to so many different styles, jazz, funk, instrumental, jewish, even some hip hop and of course more jazzzzz!!🤘😀
They started again with the old drummer of Slayer and the guitarplayer of Anthrax doing their first Ep's over. Together with the magical trio Trey Spruance (guiter, composer), Mike Patton (voice, synths) and Trevor Dunn (versetile bassplayer). The keyboardplayer Bär is Australian so hasn't joined them yet .... fingers crossed
For some amazing avante garde music I highly recommend the band Bent Knee. Terror Bird is a great place to start. I really think you'd like them. Their vocalist is incredible and their live performances are out of this world.
In terms of revolutionary, Mike Patton's Mr.Bungle, his Fantomas is right up there with Naked City. All early nineties, all absolutely jawdropping stuff. All hugely influential. As always a very thoughtful review. Much appreciated.
Came across your channel today because of Bungle. As a composer/musician myself and the FNM tattoo on my arm in my profile picture, Mike Patton is an absolute genius. I heard this album about 30 years ago and its been super fun watching new people react to it. This album is my "only 1 cd to have" if I get stranded bymyself somewhere. Mr. Bungle actually released a new song last week called USA. Exploited cover.
When this album came out, a guy at the music store I went to told me to check it out. “Circus metal” was his comment, which had me very interested. Bought the CD immediately after hearing 1 song and the whole thing is grease paint and cotton candy gold.
They are back together...which many of us never thought would happen - Scott Ian and Dave Lombardo are currently playing and recording with them. If you ever do another of their songs I highly suggest Squeeze me Macaroni or My Ass is on Fire :)
Mr Bungle are back. Bungle is Trey, Trevor and Mike. They have now re recorded their first demo Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny along with Scott Ian of Anthrax and Dave Lombardo of Slayer fame.
They reformed and re-recorded their first demo, which was the unofficial first "death metal" release. Now they have Dave Lombardo on Drums from Slayer, and Scott Ian on 2nd Guitar from Anthrax.
Mr Bungle was the band he started in high school, he used Faith No More to help promote Mr Bungle. You will notice in the Epic music video he has a Mr Bungle shirt on even
their doing reunion shows....playing stuff of their album ' raging rath of the easter bunny ' .... its like death metal. They're making a new record :)
Like the review! Believe it or not back when this album came out there were not as many classified genres as there are today. When you went into a music store. You would only find them under punk/alternative.
Patton did all the zombie voice overs for video game Left 4 Dead and the freaks in I Am Legend. He did a bunch of other voice overs for video games I just can't remember what they are. Dude has a pretty large background and his vocal range has been amazing throughout the years
First album. 1991. Mike Patton's band prior to joining Faith No More but recorded and released while in Faith No More. My favorite on the album is Stub (A Dub). Insanity and genius musicianship all rolled into one.
Please check out Lye By Mistake! Their album Fea Jur is absolutely incredible, and every song off the album is epic and filled with a landscape of sounds, time changes, and everything else you could never imagine. It’s like instrumental Mr Bungle on crack!
Lye By Mistake is a forgotten gem. Fea Jur is the most accessible, great album, but Arrangements for Fulminating Vective has that avant-hardcore that I really loved in the aughts. Along the same lines, Ephel Duath is another amazing unknown great band from that era.

Late to the party here... but never ever too late to get into Mr. Bungle. Heard this album when it first came out when I was in high school and fell in live with it. Mr. Bungle helped me evolve with my music tastes and genres. This album actually came out in the early 90's. You won't be disappointed with this album the other albums that came after this.
Glad you found it interesting. I echo others on checking out their song Goodbye Sober Day from their third album since you liked the changeups in this. You hit the nail on the head as far as them being more an avant garde group. oooooh, maybe better than GSD is also one of theirs that is quite in a different direction from the metal/horns mix is Desert Search for Techno Allah.

Korn was heavily influenced by this Mr. Bungle album. They listened to the album and said "This is our sound!" and that's exactly what they did. They even call some of their trademark chords "Mr. Bungle chord" :)
If you liked this, highly recommend Dog Fashion Disco. Heavily inspired by Mr Bungle. Acid Memoirs or Skeleton Horse would be personal suggestion for songs.
I love Mr Bungle! I'm glad you liked them. Check out the album Hephaestus by the band Iceburn. A phenomenal blend of metal, jazz, improv, and a touch of classical. 4 songs, each of them roughly 20 minutes each, that all flow in to each other seemlessly. They are all great, but Flyswatter is my favorite.
I didn't realize in 91 or 92 when that album was released it was the late 90s, but check out their second album Disco Vilante it's a completely cohesive album where all the songs run together like a Rube Goldberg device, all of Patton's bands are interesting
Check out basically anything with Patton's or Zorn's name on it, as well as the Tzadik lable, Melt Banana, Praxis, Bill Laswell; and maybe use Discogs to crossreference other projects. I think you'll be surprised with some amazing music that flew under your radar. They all got me through HS in the '90's

I'd recommend you react to the song Gong by Icelandic band Sigur Ros, they're phenomenal. I really appreciate that you keep comments concise and flowing while the music is playing, saving longer trains of thoughts for after the song is over! Other reaction channels should take note how it's done. Can't stand when the music is paused repeatedly.
Oh, timing... a lot of this was written in the late 80s and early 90s. They just didn't get a formal album produced until after Mike Patton's work in Faith No More got them the chance since he refused to stop being in Mr. Bungle at the same time.
A lot of those carnival samples are taken from a pinball machine I used to play as a kid. Crazy to think it was that long ago.. patton really is genius. There aren't enough bungle reactions anywhere, let alone FNM, dillinger etc..
One of my favorite albums. The whole thing is amazing. Angel dust is right up there with it. Disco Volante is amazing when you realize a lot of the instruments and sounds are actually Patton's voice but this album is much more repeatable. Maybe just nostalgia.
Honestly I haven't watched a TON of your videos, but I think you will thoroughly enjoy everything Mr. bungle has to offer. Especially on the album California - which is in my opinion one of the greatest albums of all time.

That's from the early 90's. They formed in 85 and when Mike Patton joined Faith no More in 89, they got some more money and made an album in 1991 with Warner Bros. And that album is they're first one, the self titled.

Mr.bungle is a legendary influential avent garden rock/metal band along the ranks of frank zappa. They influced many mordern bands we know like korn/ slipknot etc the singer of mr.bungle is also in a other legendary influential band called Faith No More they are also experimental rock/metal but a more catchy simple version they influced the whole nu metal scene. Both bands are a force to be wrecken with but they just show how influential mike patton is. If you like werid experimental stuff i highly recommend mr.bungle and mike pattons other band Fantomas. Tracks from fantomas album suspended animations that album has so many small songs that range from 1 minute to 30 seconds. Also mr.bungle second album has been known by many fans to be their most experimental and metal album lol. Their first album is their most funky/cirus upbeat music/raw attitude. I have owned and listened to this album since the early 90s..(released in 91 BTW) If you have hung around me anytime in my life, then you also know this album. I have played to destruction: 3 cassettes and 4 CDs before Mp3s came around and saved my wallet. I even own a Vinyl copy now for special occasions. Mike Patton at his finest! I have also heard that they destroyed a couple 4 track recorders during the making of this album due to its complexity in overdubbing.
This album has a lot of jazz feel in part because it was produced by John Zorn. If anything, the second album is even more chaotic. The third album is considered more commercial, but that's only relative to the first two. None of Them Knew They Were Robots, for example, is a wonderful blend of many genres and one of my favorite songs of all time.
I don't know if Mr. Bungle were the first postmodern pop (as opposed to classical/jazz) band, but they were certainly the wildest. Those first two albums are insane and completely unpredictable, constantly switching between jazz, ska, funk, rock, metal, noise, and everything else. The third album was significantly saner and showed they could write damn good semi-traditional pop songs when they wanted. They're a band I tend to appreciate more than love though, and I definitely have to be in the right mood for them. For a completely different kind of postmodernism, try Kayo Dot. Marathon is a good intro, but they have so many songs that sound completely different. Marathon is them mixing death metal with modern chamber classical.
@Mayo Dog What would you recommend as a KD intro? It's so hard to recommend an intro to them because they've changed so radically over time. It's hard to believe Choirs of the Eye and Coffins On Io are from the same band! I just think Bryan might appreciate the metal/classical vibe of something off Choirs. I've always said the same thing about KD being the spiritual successors to King Crimson (one of my all-time top 10 bands), so I'm glad to find someone else who notes the similarity!

Well put. Just a little correction: this album by Mr Bungle was released by a big label only because Mike Patton was already vocalist for Faith No More "hit" album "The Real Thing" 2 years prior. So it's not really pre FNM. :)
Ah! That partly explains why I thought this could have been a collab between SOAD, Faith No More and Primus (had a strong feeling of South Park intro)
Mr. Bungle was Patton's 1st band. Jim Martin ( FNM) had a copy of Bungle's demo and brought it to the rest of the guys in FNM when they were looking for a new singer. After the success of Patton joining the band he was able to get Bungle a record deal.

Just saw Mr Bungle at Sick New World in Vegas. They're so incredible. I love them, and Patton will live on in whispered fables, hushed tones spoken only by those with the most eccentric of tastes.
Best Patton bands that aren't faith no more, Bungle, Peeping Tom, Lovage, Tomahawk, Gen.Patton vs the Xecutioners. The man is a workhorse, and one of the best singers of any genre.

This album was one of my absolute favourites in my early teens in the early 90s (still is), and I so envy you this first listen - especially that you have so much knowledge to inform your response. It was an absolute joy to see you discover and appreciate it. :D

I sometimes wish I could listen to Mr. Bungle for the very first time again. The first song I heard was Quote Unquote and I was absolutely blown away and that continued as I started discovering more of their song's.
The "carnival" samples were taken from the pinball game Cyclone I think
They are back together with the old slayer drummer and the guitarist from anthrax
Mr Bungle and Primus are the 2 bands from my adolescence that i can't describe other than "it's just Mr Bungle/Primus," they defy generalizations
Mr. Bungle aren't around anymore but they Did have a sold-out reunion show earlier this year featuring Scott Ian from Anthrax on guitar & Dave Lombardo from Slayer on Drums. I'd definitely recommend listening to 'Squeeze Me Macaroni' off of the same album, it's my personal favorite song of theirs (super funky & quirky). Their later work is more "accessible" so you might wanna check those out for contrast.
Also do yourself a favor and check out the bands Nuclear Rabbit & Screaming Headless Torsos, they have a similar Avant-Garde/Funk Rock sound from around the same era, I'd even lump Primus into this category lol (I always listen to all 4 of them together). Nuclear Rabbit's bassist Jean Baudin is rad & plays on an 11-string.
You can't beat Mr. Bungle. This is my favorite album by them for sure.

Mr Bungle Self title album came out in 1991, 1 year before Angel Dust by Faith No More.
I've had the opportunity to see Mr. Bungle a bunch of times and they never disappoint. Great live and can definitely reproduce album type quality.

They started again with the old drummer of Slayer and the guitarplayer of Anthrax doing their first Ep's over. Together with the magical trio Trey Spruance (guiter, composer), Mike Patton (voice, synths) and Trevor Dunn (versetile bassplayer). The keyboardplayer Bär is Australian so hasn't joined them yet .... fingers crossed
For some amazing avante garde music I highly recommend the band Bent Knee. Terror Bird is a great place to start. I really think you'd like them. Their vocalist is incredible and their live performances are out of this world.

Came across your channel today because of Bungle. As a composer/musician myself and the FNM tattoo on my arm in my profile picture, Mike Patton is an absolute genius. I heard this album about 30 years ago and its been super fun watching new people react to it. This album is my "only 1 cd to have" if I get stranded bymyself somewhere. Mr. Bungle actually released a new song last week called USA. Exploited cover.
When this album came out, a guy at the music store I went to told me to check it out. “Circus metal” was his comment, which had me very interested.
Bought the CD immediately after hearing 1 song and the whole thing is grease paint and cotton candy gold.

Mr Bungle are back. Bungle is Trey, Trevor and Mike. They have now re recorded their first demo Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny along with Scott Ian of Anthrax and Dave Lombardo of Slayer fame.
It's been over 15 years and I still get chills listening to Mr. Bungle's debut album. The thrill has never gone and hopefully never will. ^_^
They reformed and re-recorded their first demo, which was the unofficial first "death metal" release. Now they have Dave Lombardo on Drums from Slayer, and Scott Ian on 2nd Guitar from Anthrax.

Like the review! Believe it or not back when this album came out there were not as many classified genres as there are today. When you went into a music store. You would only find them under punk/alternative.
Patton did all the zombie voice overs for video game Left 4 Dead and the freaks in I Am Legend. He did a bunch of other voice overs for video games I just can't remember what they are. Dude has a pretty large background and his vocal range has been amazing throughout the years
And all the creature sounds in the movie I am Legend....

First album. 1991. Mike Patton's band prior to joining Faith No More but recorded and released while in Faith No More. My favorite on the album is Stub (A Dub). Insanity and genius musicianship all rolled into one.

Please check out Lye By Mistake! Their album Fea Jur is absolutely incredible, and every song off the album is epic and filled with a landscape of sounds, time changes, and everything else you could never imagine. It’s like instrumental Mr Bungle on crack!
Lye By Mistake is a forgotten gem. Fea Jur is the most accessible, great album, but Arrangements for Fulminating Vective has that avant-hardcore that I really loved in the aughts. Along the same lines, Ephel Duath is another amazing unknown great band from that era.
@@liliIiliIilil Hear, hear! I couldn't agree more. Josh Bauman is one of my favorite guitarists, and he absolutely blew it out of the water on the two LBM releases. My personal favorite track off of "Fulminating Vective" is Nero's Intent. So incredibly epic.

Late to the party here... but never ever too late to get into Mr. Bungle. Heard this album when it first came out when I was in high school and fell in live with it. Mr. Bungle helped me evolve with my music tastes and genres. This album actually came out in the early 90's. You won't be disappointed with this album the other albums that came after this.
Glad you found it interesting. I echo others on checking out their song Goodbye Sober Day from their third album since you liked the changeups in this. You hit the nail on the head as far as them being more an avant garde group. oooooh, maybe better than GSD is also one of theirs that is quite in a different direction from the metal/horns mix is Desert Search for Techno Allah.

I've not delved super far into Mr. Bungle, but I've heard their album California, which I think is one of their more commercially successful albums? Bungles self titled album was made in 1991 but they made most songs since 1985 to 1991. This song wasnt made in the late 90s lol
Korn was heavily influenced by this Mr. Bungle album. They listened to the album and said "This is our sound!" and that's exactly what they did. They even call some of their trademark chords "Mr. Bungle chord" :)
The last concert I went to in 2020 was the Mr Bungle reunion in SF back in Feb.
If you liked this, highly recommend Dog Fashion Disco. Heavily inspired by Mr Bungle. Acid Memoirs or Skeleton Horse would be personal suggestion for songs.
I love Mr Bungle! I'm glad you liked them. Check out the album Hephaestus by the band Iceburn. A phenomenal blend of metal, jazz, improv, and a touch of classical. 4 songs, each of them roughly 20 minutes each, that all flow in to each other seemlessly. They are all great, but Flyswatter is my favorite.
My dad gave me this album when I was like 14 and it completely blew my mind and forever changed how I heard music. Sooo good 👍

I didn't realize in 91 or 92 when that album was released it was the late 90s, but check out their second album Disco Vilante it's a completely cohesive album where all the songs run together like a Rube Goldberg device, all of Patton's bands are interesting
Check out basically anything with Patton's or Zorn's name on it, as well as the Tzadik lable, Melt Banana, Praxis, Bill Laswell; and maybe use Discogs to crossreference other projects. I think you'll be surprised with some amazing music that flew under your radar. They all got me through HS in the '90's

Oh, timing... a lot of this was written in the late 80s and early 90s. They just didn't get a formal album produced until after Mike Patton's work in Faith No More got them the chance since he refused to stop being in Mr. Bungle at the same time.

A lot of those carnival samples are taken from a pinball machine I used to play as a kid. Crazy to think it was that long ago.. patton really is genius. There aren't enough bungle reactions anywhere, let alone FNM, dillinger etc..
One of my favorite albums. The whole thing is amazing. Angel dust is right up there with it. Disco Volante is amazing when you realize a lot of the instruments and sounds are actually Patton's voice but this album is much more repeatable. Maybe just nostalgia.
Honestly I haven't watched a TON of your videos, but I think you will thoroughly enjoy everything Mr. bungle has to offer. Especially on the album California - which is in my opinion one of the greatest albums of all time.

This song is actually off of the self titled album, published in 1991, so this is they're older stuff... Would recommend they're "newer" stuff off of 1999's - California. More specifically- either the song None of them knew they were robots, Ars moriendi, or goodbye sober day would be great, interest in some more of the self titled? That's from the early 90's. They formed in 85 and when Mike Patton joined Faith no More in 89, they got some more money and made an album in 1991 with Warner Bros. And that album is they're first one, the self titled.

Mr.bungle is a legendary influential avent garden rock/metal band along the ranks of frank zappa. They influced many mordern bands we know like korn/ slipknot etc the singer of mr.bungle is also in a other legendary influential band called Faith No More they are also experimental rock/metal but a more catchy simple version they influced the whole nu metal scene. Both bands are a force to be wrecken with but they just show how influential mike patton is. If you like werid experimental stuff i highly recommend mr.bungle and mike pattons other band Fantomas. Tracks from fantomas album suspended animations that album has so many small songs that range from 1 minute to 30 seconds. Also mr.bungle second album has been known by many fans to be their most experimental and metal album lol. Their first album is their most funky/cirus upbeat music/raw attitude. Its fair to say all mrbungle 3 albums hold their own identity and signature sound. :)

I have owned and listened to this album since the early 90s..(released in 91 BTW) If you have hung around me anytime in my life, then you also know this album. I have played to destruction: 3 cassettes and 4 CDs before Mp3s came around and saved my wallet. I even own a Vinyl copy now for special occasions. Mike Patton at his finest! I have also heard that they destroyed a couple 4 track recorders during the making of this album due to its complexity in overdubbing.
This album has a lot of jazz feel in part because it was produced by John Zorn. If anything, the second album is even more chaotic. The third album is considered more commercial, but that's only relative to the first two. None of Them Knew They Were Robots, for example, is a wonderful blend of many genres and one of my favorite songs of all time.
This album stunned to my core and I considered not speaking for a year after I first heard it. Naturally, I'm a lifelong fan!

I don't know if Mr. Bungle were the first postmodern pop (as opposed to classical/jazz) band, but they were certainly the wildest. Those first two albums are insane and completely unpredictable, constantly switching between jazz, ska, funk, rock, metal, noise, and everything else. The third album was significantly saner and showed they could write damn good semi-traditional pop songs when they wanted. They're a band I tend to appreciate more than love though, and I definitely have to be in the right mood for them. For a completely different kind of postmodernism, try Kayo Dot. Marathon is a good intro, but they have so many songs that sound completely different. Marathon is them mixing death metal with modern chamber classical.
@Mayo Dog What would you recommend as a KD intro? It's so hard to recommend an intro to them because they've changed so radically over time. It's hard to believe Choirs of the Eye and Coffins On Io are from the same band! I just think Bryan might appreciate the metal/classical vibe of something off Choirs. I've always said the same thing about KD being the spiritual successors to King Crimson (one of my all-time top 10 bands), so I'm glad to find someone else who notes the similarity!
