@@largol33t1 This is like formula I sailing where the most advance technology and its relevant sailing skill set are being deployed and competed by those who can participate. Yes, this is not "traditional" sailing as such and most team are sponsored by big corps. A more traditional and renown race is the Sydney to Hobart race in Australia where they have a handicap system for less advance boats. But then again, it's hard to define what is traditional; where is the cut off point in technology like sail & keel design etc etc
In a way I'm sad the racings over, but I'm super happy the kiwis won! I wish we could've experienced the full potential of the boats, but that's the weather gods for yah! Big thanks to Italy for the challenge, such a courageous team! Looking forward to seeing you guys give us another solid run for our money in the next regatta.

Gratz to NZL. Was also watching some older AC videos here on YT. Amazingly they actually used to race in conditions that had waves and, gasp, a triangular course even. I even saw something called a spinnaker. Hope to see something like that in the next AC.
They could impose displacement boats with min. 95% wood... I'd bet it won't happen. The idea to have seaworthy boats is less far fetched, as the rule requires a place open to the ocean anyway ? It would be funny if all boats had to come by sail only, the very first Americ Cup boat used to cross the Atlantic !
I like to watch sport on TV. Who knew sailing could be so exciting? The coverage has been brilliant. I feel the comms team have explained it all so well. With the on board audio and the cameras covering all the action. It was excellent.

Sailing noob here. Why don't they go higher upwind? I've heard racing boats can do much higher than 45 degrees from the wind and they seem to go exactly 45 degrees.

Jimmy Spithill indeed adds to the drama but if he were not involved our pride and aroha for this amazing sailing team would not be any less. Any silly old animosity towards Spithill is well and truly over for most kiwis now. He is a class act as is the whole Italian outfit(including their awesome supporters), kia kaha luna rosa. As a side note wouldnt it be awesome to see Spithill and Glen Ashby team up for an Aussie entry?

Those involved in decision-making are more interested in electronics, computer programs, muscle-building and creating a spectator-following for corporate advertising. The days of the America's Cup sailor, who understood sail-drill, are history. Change a headsail, gybe a spinnaker in a sea-swell? Yeah right.
