Nick always hits my wishes and my memories! In the mid-late 60’s, Mopars were the popular hot cars in my small town. With my first job out of high school I traded my 1960 Falcon (144” 6 cyl)for a 2 door 62 Dodge that had Max Wedge exhaust. They looked impressive under the hood and they had 3” removable block off plate on both sides under the door. Too bad that the car really had a very low perf worn out 361! The car may have been the ugliest Dodge ever made but I sure wish that I had it today. One more memory- the kid racer style of the day was jacked-up front end stance. The Dodge torsion bars made that really easy as compared to the twist-in JC Whitney spring spacers used on other cars. As I recall, the raised front end made it feel a bit airborne at 90mph+ on the rural blacktop roads. Thanks for the memories Nick!

If you look at the pictures of the Max Wedge cars, you won't see brake boosters. Those manifolds were too wide. Probably why they didn't last, along with the massive amount of heat they would give out along with the cost of the 3 inch pipes with their cutouts. These setups are still available in the after market. Almost forgot about the extra weight.

    Ahh yes...
The exhaust manifolds for a R/B Chrysler engine.
414 HP on the "413/426 wedge"
    Manifolds.
That was good power on those.
    The second test, the
The "383/426 w/440 "HP" cast iron manifolds"
That was the one that bit me!
On the driver's side, last plug got me good!
A 1" round burn right were my hand meets the wrist...
I took a month to heal up.
Whenever I had to work on those I from then on I got under the car to remove that last damn
    plug.
And besides, they were terrible for torque, and as we know torque is what moves the car.
373 hp / and you lost 50 lbs of torque? Ehhh.
    The 1 7/8" headers....
I see that last plug on the driver's side winking at me....
I was installing a 440/472" with 10:1 comp into my dad's Imperial, I made a set of headers from a kit,
2" primary's to a collector of 8" along side the auto tranny.
    Got very good power,
I never had a DYNO, but I figured it was a good combo for 525hp.
The Imperial whent 163 mph as Dad wrung her neck.
418hp ? I KNOW you didn't build that engine Nick.
    I really enjoyed this vid!
Took me back to the days of testing and trials.
    Spin them wrenches!
The way of the muscle car will never die.

My Grandpa raced old Camaros. he had a 440 Challenger but that was his baby. he kept it original but the old Camaros got 427s or 454s and later on he had LS1s. I seen plenty of them on the engine dyno over the years Grandpa would work on everybody's race car and get them ready for summer st Norwalk Summit dragway in Ohio. Grandma had a big block Ford wagon that could run with the best of them. all 3 Companies had a good big block and the small blocks were good

Muscle car fan from England here. Never owned one and barring a miracle I never will. Eh, the roads are too narrow round here anyway!
Interesting test. The only way to show what these parts really do. I was surprised at the weight of that exhaust manifold though - _33lbs!_ Jesus, that's 66lbs for both of them!
Something I'd like to see some time is engines being weighed. I know that'd need more than bathroom scales! For example, I was trying to find out the weight for a 426 Hemi. Got figures ranging from 720 to 843lbs. No wonder they called it The Elephant...!

With a set of 2 1/8th" headers, aftermarket heads and 10.5 -11.0 compression that thing would be 500 plus HP. with ease. Now the motor is over cammed for it's compression and would pick up both TQ and HP with a smaller one. To keep the cost down you could you go with a smaller CC head and reduce the overlap on the cam in an effort to bump up the numbers a bit Nick. MOPARTOYA!

how much do the headers weigh? besides the supposed "high perf" exhaust manifolds, was there a set of passenger car normal exhaust manifolds to compare as well? those max wedge manifolds work amazing compared to the "high perf" ones, I mean night to day difference!!! I bet they didn't use them in the 60s because of the added weight though, compared to headers if they're racing, it's all about saving weight as you know. Good Morning, Nick and crew. This is the test I've been waiting for, comparing the three exhaust manifolds. I wasn't surprised at the performance of the Max Wedge manifolds. The Chrysler engineers really knew what they were doing when they designed them, the headers won but not by much. If I had a 64 Dodge, I wouldn't put the 440 in it. I would find a 426 wedge motor, and build it into a 64 Max Wedge with a cross ram intake, and the Max Wedge exhaust manifolds, with about 10.0 : 1 compression ratio. It would be impressive to see that in the engine bay of the 64 Dodge.

You can buy those manifolds repop for 1200 u.s the two air cleaners cost 500 u.s the intake if your lucky and find a complete intake carb and linkage anywhere from 1500 to 2500 u.s they have everything to do a max wedge clone but it's not cheap they have the exhaust that goes with the manifolds good show Nick I guess if you're a fan of mopar and the 440 engine in particular this is the one stop shop to go to nicks garage the mopar mecca of canada certified world wide mopar guru in the house!

As a former drag racer, many years in altereds & funny cars, we always knew that a good set of long tube headers evacuated the cylinders much better. Therefore, you had to richen up the intake to take advantage of the headers. If you had been able to rejet the carbs, I'll bet you'd see a bigger increase in HP

Thank you so much Nick! It's wonderful to see these three exhaust set ups tested head to head like this. This is the information many of us Mopar folks have wondered about since these cars were new. The dragstrip was the only way we could measure them in the old days, this was a much better comparison. The headers were the obvious Kings of power going into the test but the amount of superiority was always a point of debate. If the headers had the benefit of an optimum fuel air mixture the gains would have definitely been better and the gap between the MW manifolds and headers would have been greater in favor of the headers. It was amazing that the Max Wedge manifolds were nearly twice the weight of the HP manifolds! Thank You Again Nick!
I stand corrected. I just reviewed the runs with the headers and the air/fuel really didn't go out of range but for a second or two. So that test was near perfect all the way around. Great job Nick!

It looked like the Max Wedge manifolds made more power and torque down low then the headers caught up in the end. If so the Max Wedge manifolds would be better around town. Am I wrong?

    • @ineffable1129
      @ineffable1129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No the Header made more torque and HP low and high they're similar from 3500-3600 after that the headers run away with it until the meet up around 5000 the header continue to climb.. The dip in the header at both points I would suspect is a result of the manifold being closer to port matched to the heads. Those dips are where the exhaust pulse shock waves echoes and interfering with flow the most. I doubt most butt dyno's would notice it on the street, the ear dyno would tell you the headers were stronger.
It would have been easier to read if they had used 3 base colors with light and dark for the each pulls plot. You can see it the tabular view of the runs.

One 4 barrel carb set some where around the left shock tower and fed the right head. The other carb set near the right shock tower and fed the left head. Do you recall anything like that? These were cast iron and for a big block mopar. I saw them back in 1971 or 1972 and he had them for a 383 Roadrunner.

Love watching you Nick, we're cut from the same cloth! Ill build anything also but love 440s BIG cams work! Hearing it go from "lope" to "chop" periodically Brought tears to my eyes! Before he passed from cancer My father and I ran a very similar 6bbl motor in a 4680lb with driver 68 monaco (13.41 @ 109mph) that was the winningest car at Osceola indiana dragway for years. CC'd at 7.75:1cr 324/.552 duration 108 ctr hyd. Liked NO more than 87 octane and lots o timing. Going to cheap headers from stock manifolds with cutouts was worth exactly 1 second at the track! Kept going bigger in cams car went faster! Ended up with a 312 /.590 mech (265deg@.050 105 ctr) with 1.6 rockers and converted 6bbl wieand x ram with 2 thermoquads same 7.75:1 big valve ported 906s went the exact same 13.4 in a heavier 73 newport first time out dragging cyls 6 and 8 in 2nd and 3rd because of fuel distribution issues. Got it sorted out but never back to track, popped a lifter out of bore due to cheap Chinese rockers, woulda run 12s lifted front wheels about 2". Drove em to work every day and hauled grain to elevator! 13yrs, 2000+ passes no failures. He drilled out lead plugs in end carbs on 6bbl and made new allen idle screws to adjust with flexible screwdriver while on car made a huge difference! Now I sold the farm and am also building a 64 polara but with a blown 528 hemi. Hearing it gave me my heart for this back!

Nick, I was browsing around in the internet today (Sept.20.2022) and ran across an article about the Stage 3 Ramcharger max wedge exhausts from the 1963 and 1964 MoPar drag race engines. The article praised the performance of them, equating them to the best tubing headers around. The article also says they're being reproduced by Mancini Racing and possibly others at this time. Whenever you're doing your next video about 426-440 wedge exhaust manifolds, perhaps you could borrow or ?? a set of them to test. They look like the real deal and for sure would be easier to put on a car than tubing headers. And keep smiling, for it makes 'em wonder what you're up to.

The Max Wedge manifolds did well. They likely won't fit newer cars though. The 1964 - 1965 Street Wedge had its own hi performance exhaust manifolds too, but they won't fit 1966 and newer cars. The cast iron does a good job of holding in the heat and noise. The 440 HP manifolds take 2.5" down pipes, swaged down to 2.375" for the mufflers then to 2.25" tailpipes. The 383 HP and 400 HP have the 440 HP manifolds fitted with 2.25" down pipes swaged up to 2.375" for the mufflers then 2.25" tailpipes. The 440 HP gets Street Hemi mufflers, which are the same outside size as the 383 mufflers, but the 383 mufflers are from the single exhaust cars.

I would have liked to see Nick use a set of stepped headers as well then take it up a notch & do some main jet tuning because I am sure he would have pulled more hp out of the headers & possibly those max wedge manifolds but being they are so short with no collector I don't think they will scavange the exhaust as good .

I ported them to the gaskets, smoothed out the curves as they are plenty rough from casting and ported the exhaust end where it meets the pipe so they would match up better to a 2 1/2 pipe. I'd really like to know how much they perform as i removed a significant amount of metal.

To make power with hp manifold, or any engine, cam selection is critical. It all works together. The lumpy cam in this engine is clearly more suited to use with headers- which the maxi’s basically are. Notice how max wedge and headers made close hp to each other. Don’t go thinking you’re gonna swap in max wedge manifolds on your mild 440 and get that extra 40 hp . With the right cam, hp manifolds would have made similar power m
