Rush...always goes deep with metaphor, nuance, double meanings, lyrics somewhat open to personal interpretation and subjected to private thoughts and experiences...the guys are just amazing.
this lp was my dads introduction to rush. He hadn't really been in our lives like a regular father, personal, but as a young 22 year old, I met back up with him later in 1985. We sat in my car with some, of his homed, and homeless, friends, drinking beer and lauded playing this whole lp . Yeah many meanings, for the Trees. I like to view it as similar to, "Politian's holding command, the greased pig of light, will slip thru your Hands." Peace brother. great reaction. lol
Once when asked about the meaning of the song in an interview Neil said “It was just a flash. I was working on an entirely different thing when I saw a cartoon picture of these trees carrying on like fools. I thought, ‘What if trees acted like people?’ So I saw it as a cartoon really, and wrote it that way. I think that’s the image that it conjures up to a listener or a reader. A very simple statement.” In a different interview Neil did reaveal a bit more of the thought behind the song. “I suppose it’s basically about the crazy way people act,” Peart explained. “This false ideal of equality they try and create. I simply believe that certain people are better at doing certain things than other people. Some people are naturally talented-they have a gift or whatever-and some people aren’t. This doesn’t mean that these people are greater human beings, by virtue of that talent, it merely means they are more talented.” In addition for me the song points out the absurdity of insisting on the equality of outcome instead of equality of opportunity with a bit of a moral to the story stressing to be careful what you wish for. The last portion of the song says "So the maples formed a union and demanded equal rights. The oaks are just to lofty we will make them give us light. Now there's no more oak oppression for they passed a nobel law and the trees are all keept equal by hachet, axe and saw". This could mean that the tops of the oaks were cut to be no higher than the tops of the maples. However, the way I always looked at the last verse was that all of the trees in the forest were cut down and thus they were made completely equal. Either way the equality of outcome is artifical, unnatural and unfair.
Thank you for this insight ...... i kinda got it on my own as the song led me in tought (kinda tought im wrong but then in undwinded in finish ... RUSH.. )... very deep and tranferable to sociaty especially in this day of age althou it started as too this its gonna be a song about revolution or rebelion ... wich it might seem like on surface .. goes way way way deeper ... glad to know i was not just imagining it :D 🤘
I forgot to say I enjoyed your reaction. I am not sure but from your reaction it seemed that you may have been seeing the cartoon version of the trees that inspired Neil in your mind. I also thought that it was funny that you had the squirrels jumping in to help fight the oppression. LOL. I think the other song that you were refering to was "Natural Science". It is an amazing song. I will put a link to a great concert version of it that I recommend. th-cam.com/video/EndaI-okEIc/w-d-xo.html Also on a quick technical note, in this reaction your mic was at a good volume level but the volume of the music was low in comparison. Take care I look forward to your next reaction.
yeah.... i was watching the cartoon with my third eye xD .... and yea i went to check on google it is natural not neural ... idk .. haha ... thank you im so glad u liked the reaction and il be sure add a few decibels to audio capture (music ) in future :D (and also will do the reaction to natural science ofc :D )
