    I moved to Dallas in 1997, so I've seen a lot of growth and change in this city (especially in Downtown Dallas which is very lively now that it is more gentrified). With such a so-called "boom" in Dallas, I really which they would address the streets and roads which are in desperate need of repair. Most roads need to be repaved. Hard to imagine how Dallas can continue to grow without addressing this basic need.

    Dallas needs a lot of work to become "the best city" in the nation. Public transportation needs a complete rehaul. Local subways are needed and so is regional rail. The freeways seem to be half heartedly put together causing more traffic even in non rush hour conditions.

      Any place that is desirable to live in, will have cost of living go up. If you don't want people moving to Dallas, then you can support policies that make Dallas a shitty place with no jobs or businesses where people don't want to move to. Or, you can make Dallas a nice place to live, and have more people move in, while increasing cost of living. This happens with every city, but Dallas is positioned to handle it best because we have a lot of flat space in DFW to build more homes in, while the Bay Area and NYC are limited by amount of land.

    Dallas is easily one of the worst cities in the US. A city is much more than the number of people and the number of major corporations there. I had the misfortune of living there for several years and it is the most isolating city I have been to. 95% of it car-dependent sprawl, multi lane roadways lined with endless strip malls. It’s a corporate wet dream. They build parks for the optics of having a park, yet it’s inaccessible without a car. If Dallas actually wants to thrive as a city it needs to invest in walkability and public transport, increasing density and reducing sprawl. I don’t think they ever will because, again, the city is all about optics. I’m pretty convinced that the DART was designed the way it was for the bragging rights of having the longest metro system in the US rather than actual functionality. The cost of living is not even that low when you consider the cost of housing plus transportation, and the massive property taxes.

    The real downside to the DFW area is Urban Sprawl. The only reason houses are so affordable is because they keep building further and further out instead of investing in better public transit and building more dense multi family dwellings. If DFW could refocus on those items it could better plan for future growth, keep housing prices low, better improve transit, and make the area more "Livable" and "Walkable" for its citizens.
    But no all the 85 year olds want their 17 acres of land and 16 chickens and hate the idea of "Undesirables" living near them

    • @chee8572
      @chee8572 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was with you until the last paragraph. My family home I grew up in in Mckinney out in the country will have a highway across our yard and through my neighbors house in 15 years. Where we buried our family dog, where we had haybail rides as kids, having a safe quiet area where we knew all 5 neighbors. It's not about "undesirables" for most people who live out in the country, its about destroying people's homes and property and giving us no choice but to force us out with a tiny little pay out amounting to nothing compared to what the city will make. They will not use the land for accessible housing and public transport, they will just build more loud highways and cheap suburbs. Living out in the country was the only option Texans had for good quality of life- blame our government, not the people.

    • @chee8572
      @chee8572 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also want to mention that land was one of the most economical choices for people (like my parents) before 2010's. You buy the land, follow code and you can build a house (or buy a trailer, tiny home, etc) for as little or as much as you want- and of course your home doesn't look like everyone else's, its all you. My neighbors and everyone's in the zip code all had different houses in varying sizes, with space to build on for family or renters. If that's what you meant by land owners and their dang chickens (haha) not wanting undesirable neighbors. Unless you were making statement about old people being racist.. it happens but luckily not in my case. You could make a bigger case that suburbs and gentrified cities breed that attitude much more easily.. in my opinion. Maybe you had a bad egg, I'm sorry if that happened - but as someone who experienced that life first hand it's not a common scenario. You find what you want in the world. :)

    • @johnmurphy6928
      @johnmurphy6928 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@214dude2 Expanding rail does absolutely nothing when almost no one uses it. Dart is terrible because demand just isn't there, and even if it were there it would be terribly inefficient due to sprawl. The reason trains work in places like Madrid, Paris, London, Tokyo, and NY is because of DENSE living. I.e. train goes a few blocks and services tens of thousands of people.
      Dallas will not improve until single family zoning is drastically decreased and multi family zoning is increased, in addition to removing absurd parking minimums.
      In the meantime, adding more bus routes and lowering the barrier for companies to build taller apartments will help

    • @214dude2
      @214dude2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnmurphy6928 But then again, those places are also over 100 to 250+ years ahead of Dallas in development. Dallas didn’t really start growing until after WW2. Dallas will never be like that in you or my lifetime. Dallas will never completely get rid of single family zoning. Our city is already planning to completely rezone the city, because it largely has the same zoning codes from (with additional overlays in areas) 1960. That’s when mandatory minimums were added. I think most commercial areas will be up zoned but not in the middle of single family areas. Only if it’s like a duplex, triplex, or quadplex. Not an actual highrise. ATP most of Dallas’ single family housing stock is from very established neighborhoods. Most ppl want to retain the look of their neighborhood. Ppl are already seeing in other parts of town what gentrification looks like and how all of the old 1910s-1920s craftsman homes and duplexes are being demolished for ugly ass modern urban apartment blocks that tower over the existing housing stock. People are reacting in opposition to the widespread demolition of their neighborhood’s character. The very recent Rezoning in West Oak Cliff is a prime example after people seen what’s going on in Bishop Arts. West Oak Cliff is next to North Oak Cliff where the Bishop Arts District is located.

    Good video. Having been a resident of the DFW Metroplex for several decades, the things I would change are the title of the video, some of the claims made regarding population, and the pronunciation of some of the cites.
    While Dallas is and probably always will be the largest city in the Metroplex, I like that you covered the Metroplex as a whole. The title of the video should reflect that. Titling the video something like "The Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex in 2050 -- Leading into the Future" would be a bit more of an accurate portrayal of the video's content.
    Also, while your statistics seem accurate, they give the impression that Dallas is or soon will be the 4th largest city in the USA, and that isn't accurate. When looking at the population of just the city of Dallas, it's the 9th largest city in the USA. Two cities in Texas -- Houston and San Antonio -- have a larger population than Dallas. When taking into account the population of just the cities and not the metro areas, Houston is 4th and San Antonio is 7th in the USA. That said, you are correct that the DFW Metroplex as a whole is projected to overtake the Chicago metro area in population sometime in the 2030s, which would make the DFW Metroplex the 3rd largest metro area in the USA. Even though Houston and San Antonio by themselves are bigger than Dallas by itself, the DFW Metroplex is bigger than either the Houston or the San Antonio metro areas.
    Finally, Plano in Collin County is pronounced "PLAY-no", and another city in the county is called McKinney, not McKinley.
    Those are the only things I'd change, although if you make a sequel or redo the narration, you might want to add that DFW International Airport is one of the few airports in the world that serves over 200 destinations worldwide, and perhaps also that American Airlines' hub at DFW Airport is the 2nd largest airline hub in the world; only Delta Airlines' hub in Atlanta Georgia is larger.

    • @moose2021
      @moose2021 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Zettaaaaaaa To a point, that's true. Dallas is the biggest city in the Metroplex, and it has several national or international HQ within its borders for business (Southwest Airlines and AT&T are just two of them). This can also be said about other cities in the Metroplex, though. American Airlines has its international HQ in Fort Worth, just across a highway from DFW Airport (so not downtown FW, but within the city limits). Toyota has its US HQ in Plano, and Pizza Hut has its international HQ there. 7-11 used to have its international HQ in Dallas but moved to Irving, a nearby suburb. With sports, the DFW Metroplex is one of thirteen metro areas in the US to have teams in all four of the largest major leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL), and there is also an MLS and a WNBA team. Most of the teams do not play and/or are not headquartered in Dallas, but in other large cities like Arlington and Frisco. All of these things show that it's not just Dallas that's driving the growth in the region.

    What brought many to Dallas and other growing sunbelt cities like Atlanta, Phoenix, Vegas, others were low cost of living. Companies from other cities relocate, bring their employees, new residents move hearing about jobs. Create more jobs like construction or jobs in New built schools hospitals, retail, fast food, etc.
    Eventually things will slow down as new cities will attract Americans with low housing cost, companies relocate and the cycle continues.

    I think the biggest thing to note is that youre describing what dallas used to be, not what it is and has been for years now. Its rapidly declining in standard of living, increasing crime problems, and some crazy budget problems due to the sprawl. Can the city fix it and restore the standard of living? Maybe. DART is trying to push transit oriented development, and the inner suburbs no longer have room to expand, and the boomers are dying out so theres definitely been a noticeable interest to make the city more livable and walkable. Ft worth is behind the curve on this, but if things go ok in dallas then they might get on board and begin making improvements, but as it stands the Metroplex has a majority of its infrastructure crumbling, a dangerous and very incomplete public transit network where the bus stops literally have homeless people living in them, rapid inflation in housing prices (other inflation is pretty low tho so it could be worse), horrible sprawl leading to horrible walkability, majority single family housing which is almost entirely responsible for the previous 2 problems and more, an education system thats declining, massive bugetary problems, and a downtown thats attrocious in areas because theres surface level parking. Not underground, not even garages, legit parking lots in a downtown urban area. Thankfully the city is at least trying on some fronts to combat these problems, but the suburbs continue to be problematic and older generations still have most of the power so changing the city to be more walkable and livable is gonna take a pretty long time. Also, fuck TxDOT. They need to help fund dart instead of wanting to widen the already 6 lane each way highways. Redoing intersections is cool but like theyre low key the biggest problem with making public transit viable in texas.

    • @franciscodanconia4324
      @franciscodanconia4324 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      DFW has not, and never will be a transit oriented city. It was built on a cheap prairie land in the age of the car. It's not a compact, geographically hemmed in European like city like NYC, Boston, etc. Economically it makes no sense to build housing up when you can go buy 100 acres north of the Sam Rayburn tollway and build 400 houses. And the infrastructure in DFW is just fine. And the suburbs do not have major crime problems. Heck, even Oak Cliff is gentryfying.
      DART is a joke. It's mostly filled with homeless getting out of the heat or cold, and the hub and spoke design make it unusable unless you happen to work downtown, or are going to a Mavs game, concert, or the Fair. It would take twice as long to get from DFW airport to Richardson on the train as it does to take 635, even in rush hour traffic. And you still have to have a car to get to the station in the first place. And have you ever looked into one of the DCTA trains as is trundles by from Denton to Carrolton? I see them almost every day and on a good day there's a half dozen people on a 2 DMU train.
