  • From its beginning in 1996, Dallas' light rail and commuter rail network has grown to 84 stations, spanning 175 miles (282 kilometres). This animated video takes you through the timeline of when new stations were opened, forming the DART, DCTA, and Trinity Metro network that we know today.

As a former Rail Operator for DART this a very nice video. A few things, Lake Highlands Station is between White Rock And LBJ/Skillman, also there is talks of a new subway under downtown. There are two rail yards (this is for those who want to see the trains moving around in the yard. The first yard is called CROF (Central rail Operating Facility), it the old SP yard and it's off I'30 & Second Ave, the other yard is NWROF (Northwest Rail Operating Facility) located in Northwest Dallas off Denton Rd, you can see lots of movement in both yards. Also for those who like speed, you should stand behind the operating cab and watch the signals and how fast the train goes! Also experience to operate a train!

Unfortunately, the D2 subway is indefinitely postponed so DART can focus more of its resources on finishing the Silver regional rail line. I'm not frustrated though; I actually think it's good to focus on one big project at a time, so then the transit agency won't have to divide its money and resources.

Cars are a big part of American culture. Oil and gas companies don’t like public transportation because it hurts their business and that’s a huge industry here. Cars also give a sense of individuality which is a huge part of the American mindset.
There are large cities that you can go car free in, for example most of the New England area is pretty easy to navigate without a car or at least minimal car use.
But somewhere like Texas? Absolutely not. Too much oil and gas here.
It’s possible to build these things but there’s just not a lot of interest. I have played with the idea of moving to Europe. I had family friends move to Italy and they love it there. If I can find a job out there and safely move I think I would.

I really hope that DART will eventually expand the Red and Orange lines northward into Frisco, Allen, and/or McKinney. Collin County has grown so much in the past couple of decades that having only 2 (soon to be 4) stations for the entire county just doesn't make practical sense. This is especially true considering how many residents of those cities commute to Dallas daily. I really think having DART expand northward would ease a lot of the traffic problems that people complain about up in the suburbs.

Even if they did expand in the north Dallas suburbs more they’d still be useless to the vast majority of people that live there. Building 1 station for the entirety of a suburb is just impractical, everyone would still have to drive just to even get there. DART would only add on to the amount of empty stations it has outside of the downtown area.
Public transit is just unserviceable in the American style suburbs due to the way they were built and designed due to their low density and sparse nature.
Public transit is meant for higher density areas with lots of people to be transported to another area with lots of people to ease congestion. You can’t do that if you area is so low in denser that everyone has to drive a car just to even get to the transit station.

    • @blackhole9961
      @blackhole9961 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Many people fail to realize America’s urban planning and design. It’s ridership is so low because it’s useless to the vast majority of people that live in DFW.
People don’t realize American cities like DFW are incredibly spread out to the size of small countries with low density Euclidean zoning urban and suburban sprawl.
DFW is essentially a gigantic suburb, and public transit just can’t serve the American suburbs as they aren’t urban enough to be able to enjoy that amenity.
Imagine walking 3 or more miles to your nearest DART station just to go through many stops and still have to do many more miles of walking to get to your final destination. That’s a waste of time and it’s simply something that Americans don’t have to waste.

@@blackhole9961 Eh, I can walk to two different stations in 5 minutes. The issue is that for most things its actually cheaper to drive. Parking is free most places - its $6 for a RT on DART. Its worth it if I am going someplace like the airport - where parking ISN'T free.
I wish transit was more viable here, I actually used to work a block from Gallatyn station and could literally ride a straight shot. But that shot was parallel to Central Expressway, and a gallon of gas for $2-3 is cheaper than 2 tickets. Even monthly passes only work if you travel 18 Round trips or more a month. I did it a few times, the walk across my corp parking lot was as far as the station to the lot... Of course my NEXT job was in Frisco...

DART and the cities of Sachse(right next to Garland with the Downtown Garland Station), Wylie, Murphy and maybe Lavon should have a conversation about allowing bus service to extend into those cities. It's middle-class people with homes and businesses but there's still plenty of people that could use the DART bus and rail service
Then from a rail perspective it seems that with cooperation from the city of Allen DART should be able to expand northward some.

I tried to use the DART system. I really did. Even when I lived a block away from a rail station it just wasn't very useful. It seems the system is designed to take commuters from the suburbs to downtown. A lot of people are employed downtown of course but a lot of people are not, too. Imagine living in Carrollton and working somewhere in Plano. Currently you have to take the train all the way downtown and all the way back up again. It takes forever. And you'd better work very close to a station because Plano is not pedestrian friendly at all.
For a while I lived right next to Cedars station. I wanted to go to Target, which is near Cityplace. Even though it's not far, it sure is slow because it goes through downtown with all those at-grade lines that cross streets. When I lived there, there was no service to deep ellum. There was TRE service to the airport but no light rail. The rail line to Love Field stops nowhere near the terminals. If you want to go anywhere at night, forget it.
Anyway you just can't get around the city on the thing. If the bus service were better, maybe it would work. Crosstown trains would help. I'm not sure if this silver line is the answer in that department. On the map it doesn't even look like it has a transfer to the green line.
As far as the region goes., Fort Worth is now pretty close to the size Dallas was when it started its light rail system. All they have is that one line. I don't believe there are plans for anything else. Arlington isn't part of the system at all and from the looks of it, never will be. There isn't even a single bus line in Arlington, a city of 400,000 right between two cities of a million+ each. It's ridiculous.

I lived in Dallas in 2014~2016. DART was super useful and actually fun to use. I moved there again in 2021-2022, they made changes to the system and, in my opinion, ruined everything. A lot of routes were removed and it just no longer became helpful. Plus they decreased the police presence on the train routes and it has definitely made the system less fun. I miss when it was an actually useful system.

Unless you live within walking distance of the station AND your final destination is also within walking distance, it’s absolutely useless.
      Slow compared to just driving
And you need a car to get to and from the station generally.

@KayC Tacy nothing can really be done about “walkability” considering 98% of the Dallas area is suburbia but very spread out.

@Lorey Taylor I agree with you. I don’t have a car and I use DART every day and I don’t see people sleeping in the cars or the smell of urine. There are the exemptions of course but like the word implies “exemptions” are rare.
