Thanks for your analysis. I love Home Free's version of this beautiful song. This is in my top 5 songs by them. They really brought out the emotion of it. Tim's lead is amazing with his deep bass. Also love Rob & Chance's solos plus the great harmonies. And Adam is tasteful in making the simple sound of pounding his chest & thigh. I believe we can change our course in life. We don't have to make the same mistakes as our parents. We can choose to rise above it.
Such beautiful harmonies. It always amazes me that five such unique voices can blend so seamlessly - and take over from each other without interrupting the flow.
I really love Tim's "pretty" voice at the start, we don't often get to hear that - especially totally alone. I do not know the original version, so, no, I don't hear harmonies there - even after listening to the entire song hundreds of times, just a lovely soft, almost wistful voice. It constantly amazes me that with 5 definitely different voices, it is quite often difficult to decide who is singing a particular line at any one point. There are times (there is one song in particular that changes nearly imperceptibly through at least 4 voices, but I can't remember which one it is right now) when you KNOW they are switching, but if you aren't really paying close attention, you miss it.

Home Free sang in a shelter when a concert was cancelled because of a thunderstorm. Adam Rupp blew a pitch pipe and then the 5 of them just launched into song. This is in my top 5 favorite Home Free videos, probably due to the way it features Tim's beautiful voice in the lead, and then adds featured parts for all the other guys to show their talents too. There is a funny video about a live performance of this song where Tim talks about having left his microphone in the break room during intermission. They were just heading back on stage when he had to run back down a flight of stairs, down a hallway, grab the mic, run back up the stairs, onto the stage, and begin singing: "How much of my mother..." Everyone was giving him worried looks. Austin thought he had gotten some bad news via a text during break and was trying to hold himself together. Tim said he just was gasping for oxygen. I have to say that their arrangements home free has are the best you can get! I worked with a band that had 4 part harmonies back in the late 70's and enjoyed mixing their live shows, fans also enjoyed and they had a large fan base. 🌹

This song is special to me. I think of these questions often in regards to my family and origins. When I first heard it by Home Free, it felt like listening to a prayer. Beautiful, and yet another example of the beautiful sound of their 5 part harmonies.
I first was exposed to this song by Home Free's version, and I just loved it. For me, this song is about nature vs. nurture, and how much of who we are is something we chose to be.
I always enjoy your analysis. The rhythmic percussion Adam does reminds me of a heartbeat. It goes well with the lyrics and leaves Adam free to harmonize with the others.
The smooth generally calm "soundscape" can carry the listener along. Only later may a person tangle with the lyrics to realize a message may apply to him or her. Whether bouncy or serious the song, I love listening to the voices.
Yes! Adam does have a really pleasant voice. He doesn’t get a lead very often (his choice, he has said being he is the only member without proper vocal training), but he does sing a couple of lines in their cover of How Great Thou Art (very worthy of a reaction. It went viral). Also, Adam has a snippet part in their cover of “America” (which I believe is the same melody as “God Save the King” in the UK).
There's also "Helplessly Hoping, and several Christmas songs, plus "Home Free - Go Rest High On That Mountain (Acapella Cover) // The Church Sessions" (there's another version of it, but I like that one the best). I got to hear them sing it live, at the concert I attended in 2017. Adam sings beautifully in that one, as well as quite a few others. Here on YT, Sherry Hebebrand has a whole playlist of songs where "Adam Rupp Sings." It's a longer list than you might think. 😀

It's one of their calmer songs and I love it. Music doesn't have to be bombastic to be great. I'm not sure why Home Free videos are so problematic to react to. It's not caused by Home Free. I know they watch reaction/analysis videos sometimes and I know that they have reached out to some to react to them. So, who knows. Just don't give up, I guess. As Christmas season is coming up here are two recommendation for Christmas songs by Home Free: "Mary, Did You Know" and "Snowglobe". The last one is an original. Thanks for the reaction and analysis. @fairshiona4093 -- It's not the group themselves, that causes the copyright problem thing. It's the producing company. I don't know if their current stuff is having less problems with that or not, but I hope so. I had heard a few months back, that they had "had words" with that company, to let them know that they were NEVER worried about reactors. At least for a short time, if not ever since then, the problems seem to have been fewer and farther between.

These guys are really just so freaking talented. Im not a huge fan of the Mayer version. This version gets me everytime. The fact that 5 guys can make up a group of: 5 tenors, 2 basses, 5 beat boxers, 1 grand champion beat boxer, and more makes my head spin sometimes.
Actually, there are three basses and/or baritones, with Adam Rupp having the longest range, which he can use to sing, OR in his solo beatbox routines... Adam Rupp = B0 - G♯6 Tim Foust = B0 - A5 Adam Chance = F♯1 - F5 Also, Adam Rupp has said repeatedly, that he has NEVER been in a beatboxer contest, and does NOT have a "grand champion" rating for his beatboxing. He has no idea who started that rumor.
Love this analysis! As someone who comes from a somewhat dysfunctional yet warm family this song feels both wary and hopeful. Being appreciative of the love received growing up versus wanting to do and be better, wondering if you'll end up like your family in the end or can strive to improve on what you've grown up into. Home Free translates this message beautifully, their style of singing suits this song very well. A bit folky and..hymnal sounding in a way? Upon initially hearing it, it sounds simple and earthy/gritty because of the folky campfire aesthetic of their sound. I love how you delved deeper in the layers of the arrangement, and on how beautiful and intricate they've cast together this sound! Thank you for that, I'll be listening more intently to this cover of theirs from now on!

Mind blowing!The song was already beautiful and very well sung by John Mayer, but Home Free has made it its own with the respect of the original. The great voices touches you so deeply. Small note: the starting verse being freestyle solo is a feature of trad folk, so I was pleasantly surprised by your pointing it out 😊 Another masterclass of "simple != boring" I think you'd love getting your teeth into is Brothers in Arms. The original truly earned its awards, with Knofler's guitar work expertly showing how space is as important as notes. HF turned it into capella and it's a lovely example of arranging to different mediums done really, really well.

The lyrics speak to me a lot because my mother was seriously mentally ill. I am constantly questioning what I have inherited from her. The second verse also speaks to me as I was in an emotionally abusive marriage for seventeen years. It's one of my favorite Home Free songs.

Is it...? All of the above. 😀 Thank you, Sir, for your comment about the suggestions that appear so often, about "auto-tune," pitch correction, etc. I get SO tired of hearing all of that. Plus...I've heard Home Free sing live, and I can tell you that the harmonics are just as perfect when you hear them standing in front of you, with no instrumental music, and yet...because of how they blend their voices, you would think that maybe there was some. NOPE! I wish I had gotten to hear this one, live, but it came out about two months after my daughter, one of my grandsons, and I got to go to a concert. I would go and hear them live every single day of the week, if I could. They are just...WOW! This song, by the way is one of the entries in "my favorite genre." (grin) The "body percussion" is also the sound of a heartbeat, which is illustrated by Adam using his upper chest, over his heart, as the "drum." I always do that with him, when I sing along. The first time I heard them sing this, when the album was just published, I kept saying to Adam (from my chair here, in front of my computer), "OW! That must HURT!" Then I realized how he holds his hand, to create the sound of a beating heart, and that there just might be a mic under his shirt -- possibly even some sort of a lightweight soundboard. So he probably doesn't have to actually just pummel his chest "to death." When you were talking (12:40-ish) about Tim carrying the higher "oh-ohs," I stopped for a couple of minutes to see if you have reacted to Peter Hollens and Tim Foust singing "Greensleeves." You haven't, and I hope you will, sometime in the future. You will absolutely LOVE it, I'm sure. Both men do a great job, and Tim's range and flexibility (that, I think, will remind you of the "opening up" part you spoke of, here near the end) are EXTREMELY well-displayed. Great reaction. Here's a beautiful video from the 2024 class of A Cappella Academy (the annual 10-day intensive vocal music camp for kids 12 to 18 from around the world, founded in 2014 by Avi Kaplan, Ben Bram (PTX's longtime producer/arranger) and Rob Dietz (composer/arranger).) The kids are broken into groups based on preferred genre. This group, Apricity, does an amazing job with Aurora's "A Different Kind of Human" and "The Secret Garden". I have seen them live 5 times and in my opinion they are better live if that is possible. They make their performances an experience and fun...no auto tune in the concerts and they are just fraky good.

Plus, after they started using the looper for songs like Ed Sheeran's "Castle On the Hill," they put the constantly-repeated initial tenor rhythmical phrase into the looper system before they start singing the song itself, then they all sing, with it playing in the background, and you can't hear any dissonance in the entire song. It's just gorgeous!

I don’t know if this is a lesser-acclaimed Home Free rendition or maybe an overlooked gem. But it continues to grow on me the more that I hear it. As far as being strict with reactions, I’ve read that HF’s former label has been very heavy with blocks and such. But, that the group itself is not in favor of such strictness and founded their own label to better control their own content.
This seems to be a environment v. genetics. How much of our DNA dictates who/what we are vs. where and how we are raised? We are able to chose which direction we go - it's called free will.

Don’t get me wrong because I’m not a music professional (probably couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket), and I do enjoy Chance’s voice, but in comparison to the leisurely pace of Tim’s first verse it seems like Chance is kind of hurrying through his verse. I’ve never listened to the original song, so I was wondering if Chance’s verse has been influenced by the original, or was this a conscious decision to go that speed, or an I just hearing things?

This song is special to me. I think of these questions often in regards to my family and origins. When I first heard it by Home Free, it felt like listening to a prayer. Beautiful, and yet another example of the beautiful sound of their 5 part harmonies.
I first was exposed to this song by Home Free's version, and I just loved it. For me, this song is about nature vs. nurture, and how much of who we are is something we chose to be.

does reminds me of a heartbeat. It goes well with the lyrics and leaves Adam free to harmonize with the others.
The smooth generally calm "soundscape" can carry the listener along. Only later may a person tangle with the lyrics to realize a message may apply to him or her. Whether bouncy or serious the song, I love listening to the voices.

Yes! Adam does have a really pleasant voice. He doesn’t get a lead very often (his choice, he has said being he is the only member without proper vocal training), but he does sing a couple of lines in their cover of How Great Thou Art (very worthy of a reaction. It went viral). Also, Adam has a snippet part in their cover of “America” (which I believe is the same melody as “God Save the King” in the UK).
Those two songs have some of the absolute best 5 part harmonies I have ever heard.
There's also "Helplessly Hoping, and several Christmas songs, plus "Home Free - Go Rest High On That Mountain (Acapella Cover) // The Church Sessions" (there's another version of it, but I like that one the best). I got to hear them sing it live, at the concert I attended in 2017. Adam sings beautifully in that one, as well as quite a few others.
Here on YT, Sherry Hebebrand has a whole playlist of songs where "Adam Rupp Sings." It's a longer list than you might think. 😀

It's one of their calmer songs and I love it. Music doesn't have to be bombastic to be great.
I'm not sure why Home Free videos are so problematic to react to. It's not caused by Home Free. I know they watch reaction/analysis videos sometimes and I know that they have reached out to some to react to them. So, who knows. Just don't give up, I guess.
As Christmas season is coming up here are two recommendation for Christmas songs by Home Free: "Mary, Did You Know" and "Snowglobe". The last one is an original.

@fairshiona4093 -- It's not the group themselves, that causes the copyright problem thing. It's the producing company. I don't know if their current stuff is having less problems with that or not, but I hope so. I had heard a few months back, that they had "had words" with that company, to let them know that they were NEVER worried about reactors. At least for a short time, if not ever since then, the problems seem to have been fewer and farther between.

These guys are really just so freaking talented. Im not a huge fan of the Mayer version. This version gets me everytime. The fact that 5 guys can make up a group of: 5 tenors, 2 basses, 5 beat boxers, 1 grand champion beat boxer, and more makes my head spin sometimes.
Actually, there are three basses and/or baritones, with Adam Rupp having the longest range, which he can use to sing, OR in his solo beatbox routines...
Adam Rupp = B0 - G♯6
Tim Foust = B0 - A5
Adam Chance = F♯1 - F5
Also, Adam Rupp has said repeatedly, that he has NEVER been in a beatboxer contest, and does NOT have a "grand champion" rating for his beatboxing. He has no idea who started that rumor.

As someone who comes from a somewhat dysfunctional yet warm family this song feels both wary and hopeful. Being appreciative of the love received growing up versus wanting to do and be better, wondering if you'll end up like your family in the end or can strive to improve on what you've grown up into.
Home Free translates this message beautifully, their style of singing suits this song very well. A bit folky and..hymnal sounding in a way?
Upon initially hearing it, it sounds simple and earthy/gritty because of the folky campfire aesthetic of their sound. I love how you delved deeper in the layers of the arrangement, and on how beautiful and intricate they've cast together this sound! Thank you for that, I'll be listening more intently to this cover of theirs from now on!

Mind blowing!The song was already beautiful and very well sung by John Mayer, but Home Free has made it its own with the respect of the original. The great voices touches you so deeply. Another masterclass of "simple != boring" I think you'd love getting your teeth into is Brothers in Arms. The original truly earned its awards, with Knofler's guitar work expertly showing how space is as important as notes. HF turned it into capella and it's a lovely example of arranging to different mediums done really, really well.
I think I may have to add this to my calming down list. And I don’t care if it’s auto-tuned or not - - Pentatonix/Voice Play - all autotuned and I don’t even know that I care if it sounds better. The lyrics speak to me a lot because my mother was seriously mentally ill. I am constantly questioning what I have inherited from her. The second verse also speaks to me as I was in an emotionally abusive marriage for seventeen years. It's one of my favorite Home Free songs.

Is it...? All of the above. 😀 Thank you, Sir, for your comment about the suggestions that appear so often, about "auto-tune," pitch correction, etc. I get SO tired of hearing all of that. Plus...I've heard Home Free sing live, and I can tell you that the harmonics are just as perfect when you hear them standing in front of you, with no instrumental music, and yet...because of how they blend their voices, you would think that maybe there was some. NOPE!
I wish I had gotten to hear this one, live, but it came out about two months after my daughter, one of my grandsons, and I got to go to a concert. I would go and hear them live every single day of the week, if I could. They are just...WOW!
This song, by the way is one of the entries in "my favorite genre." (grin)
The "body percussion" is also the sound of a heartbeat, which is illustrated by Adam using his upper chest, over his heart, as the "drum." I always do that with him, when I sing along. The first time I heard them sing this, when the album was just published, I kept saying to Adam (from my chair here, in front of my computer), "OW! That must HURT!" Then I realized how he holds his hand, to create the sound of a beating heart, and that there just might be a mic under his shirt -- possibly even some sort of a lightweight soundboard. So he probably doesn't have to actually just pummel his chest "to death."
When you were talking (12:40-ish) about Tim carrying the higher "oh-ohs," I stopped for a couple of minutes to see if you have reacted to Peter Hollens and Tim Foust singing "Greensleeves." You haven't, and I hope you will, sometime in the future. You will absolutely LOVE it, I'm sure. Both men do a great job, and Tim's range and flexibility (that, I think, will remind you of the "opening up" part you spoke of, here near the end) are EXTREMELY well-displayed.

Here's a beautiful video from the 2024 class of A Cappella Academy (the annual 10-day intensive vocal music camp for kids 12 to 18 from around the world, founded in 2014 by Avi Kaplan, Ben Bram (PTX's longtime producer/arranger) and Rob Dietz (composer/arranger).) The kids are broken into groups based on preferred genre. This group, Apricity, does an amazing job with Aurora's "A Different Kind of Human" and "The Secret Garden". I have seen them live 5 times and in my opinion they are better live if that is possible. They make their performances an experience and fun...no auto tune in the concerts and they are just fraky good.
Agreed. Plus, after they started using the looper for songs like Ed Sheeran's "Castle On the Hill," they put the constantly-repeated initial tenor rhythmical phrase into the looper system before they start singing the song itself, then they all sing, with it playing in the background, and you can't hear any dissonance in the entire song. It's just gorgeous!

I don’t know if this is a lesser-acclaimed Home Free rendition or maybe an overlooked gem. But it continues to grow on me the more that I hear it. As far as being strict with reactions, I’ve read that HF’s former label has been very heavy with blocks and such. But, that the group itself is not in favor of such strictness and founded their own label to better control their own content.
This seems to be a environment v. genetics. How much of our DNA dictates who/what we are vs. where and how we are raised? We are able to chose which direction we go - it's called free will.

I keep forgetting to say that I really wish you would do "Playing With Fire" - all of the reactors who actually analyze keep getting sidetracked by the video and quit listening to the music.
Don’t get me wrong because I’m not a music professional (probably couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket), and I do enjoy Chance’s voice, but in comparison to the leisurely pace of Tim’s first verse it seems like Chance is kind of hurrying through his verse. I’ve never listened to the original song, so I was wondering if Chance’s verse has been influenced by the original, or was this a conscious decision to go that speed, or an I just hearing things?
Tim's first verse is able to be much more free in terms of tempo due to there being no other parts 🎵
