It is so exciting and scary to do huge pieces, the largest single canvas I ever did was 8 x 11 foot, it was going in a dining room, so my husband built a rolling system from the ceiling and i pulled it down as I painted it, a wildlife piece, it was 30 days of work but I loved doing it, many murals in my life but the big canvas is the best challenge. I love how you finished this piece, yes I have already watched those. Awesome work Lori.
This is so generous of you to go to the trouble of filming and narrating this amazing painting process! I’m sure you have seen videos about David Hockney and the 60 panels he painted to put together for the A Greater Grand Canyon. Doing a big painting like this in smaller panels would be the only way I could ever think to tackle it. But I am not an abstract painter so will never have this problem. Thank you so much for sharing! I can’t wait to see the final finished product!
Aww thanks Suzanne so glad you enjoyed. I have some 6x7 here that I dying to get finished and sold so I can get some space back in the studio haha the large ones are a hoot to make but storing them is a pain.
Hehehe, love the molding paste in the hair! I recently went to shake a large bottle of paint, forgetting I’d already loosened the top, so then with the first shake I covered myself from head to arm in white paint! It took forever to clean up!
OMG! Lori this is incredible. Thanks for sharing your process. Such a major undertaking. I love that you used the word savouring - I would probably just be overwhelmed!

Hi Lori, I have been binge watching your channel today. Thanks for the many tips about using social media for sales and promo. I am 60 and took up oils and landscape painting about three years ago and have done lots of plein air work and studio work from my own photos. Learning the ins and outs of social media marketing has been a steep learning curve but worth the time I am sure. Watching you paint abstractly is inspiring me to give it a go too. Looks like great fun. I like what you are doing, keep it up.
I can't work out (you have though lol) how on earth your managing to connect the painting over the three canvases as you use such a free intuitive style, so very clever Lori I applaud you.
Hi Lori -- I am a new subscriber and have only watched a couple of your videos but really appreciate your content. I watched a different one about the way you do commissions -- letting the buyer have first dibs and no obligations until it is completed. I like this a lot. I do 100% commissioned work (custom furniture) and I feel that I MUST take deposit up front from our clients, otherwise it would be extremely difficult to sell whatever they have commissioned as a "spec piece" for anywhere near full-price, since it is a functional object of a certain size / color. Now, in order to feel okay doing this, and feel confident that the piece will be well-received by our clients, the specifications have to be nailed down very very well at the beginning of the process (and this is okay; it takes time but is well worth it). Typically our clients are more than happy to wait and pay more in order to get exactly what they want, but this has us working to such an extremely tight specification that it allows almost no creativity at all. I have thought about branching out into art painting, to get some creative relief. But I am very very happy to hear you addressing this issue, and I like the way you think about it and handle it. I will check back and watch your other videos when I get a chance. Many many thanks for your helpful content.
I completely understand why you would need to take a deposit up front. Customized furniture completely different plus massive storage issues should people not follow through with the sale. Yes most times the creative process is lost when its commission work. I had one month when it was almost all commission work, that was probably my most frustrating month as an artist. Perhaps you are correct it might be nice to have an outlet that allows you to create something you want to do.
Hi Lori, I have started some abstract (small) paintings, but mainly sketches, I've just recently found your channel and find the content very informative and love your work. Cheers from Australia.

Hi Lori. Thanks for sharing your process of painting. You use a reference picture or photo. I’d be interested in seeing what inspires you. Is it your own sketch or an actual photo of a scene ? Just curious what you see and how you translate that image into your beautiful art.
This painting was based off another painting of mine. Because this piece was so large and on 3 separate canvases I had to make sure the image lined up properly. My studio didn't have 18 feet high ceilings so I had slightly grid the painting in order to nail the final composition. I have never yet seen this piece with all three panels togethers. lol I relocated to a different town before it was installed.
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist Thanks. I have modeling paste on the way. I used gesso on canvas very heavy to give some texture yesterday. I guess for me I know the finished painting will be way better than any layer that came before it. Think of it like this....laying the first couple of rows of bricks are going to look beautiful on a brand new home but you don't stop there, you keep going until it's complete.... LOL sorry haha it's best way I could describe it.
Lori, amazing video. A little bit of Canada while here in Cozumel. I watch and get so inspired to create. Once we return home in June, I am pulling out the paints! No excuses. Question, is there somewhere that shows the grid pattern up close. I love your work, keep inspiring, stay safe.
I could use a little Cozumel right about now haha For the grid I really only the divided the entire photo into 9 equal square parts. So if we now break that a apart into the 3 panels, the panel is divided into 3 equal parts. Because I started out as a realism I don’t need a large grid to replicate work. So not really anything to see up close lol it’s just two dots to let me know where the thirds are on the canvas😊😊
You are a rockstar Lori!!!!😄how you can keep all 3 canvases straight is mind boggling!!!🙈 Why don’t you put paint cans under the canvas at least, so not so much bending for you... or than maybe then it’s too high. Anyways ...just incredible!!!
Gonna be awesome!! The high flow medium you mentioned, is that the one that states it should be mixed at a specific ratio with water? If so do you follow that recommendation? Im curious how that compares to the blending medium by liquitex as well. Thank you for another insightful video, your too kind!
I think maybe I didn't explain well enough. I have copied this from the web "Some sources advise not to mix acrylic paint with more than 50 percent water. Any more than this may cause the polymer in the acrylic paint to break down and lose its adhesive qualities, resulting in peeling or flaking at some stage or the lifting of the paint when you paint subsequent layers. To be safe, many manufacturers suggest that you use no more than 30 percent water to thin acrylics when painting on a nonabsorbent surface, such as a primed canvas. When painting on an absorbent surface, you can use any amount of water because the fibers of the unprimed canvas, paper, or wood will hold the pigment to the support as well as absorb the excess water. If you use less than 30 percent water, you eliminate any concerns about having a negative effect on the binding properties of the paint. " I paint on primed canvas so I use lots of any type medium when I want to create washes and glazes. I hope that explains what I was trying to say haha
Do you have a commission for that size? Not sure how you would get that into a building or a house ?? You would have to build that canvas and paint it already installed.
Wow, this is a massive painting. I haven't yet finished watching the whole thing. When did projects like this stop being "scary", Lori? And do you work with local canvas manufacturers?

Hi Lori, amazing work!, i learnt so much from the whole series on these pieces. Quick question, i'm looking at doing canvases this size and making them myself, how deep (profile) are yours and did you need to use canvas keys to tighten at that size or was the tightening spray enough? Thanks and awesome stuff!
you have to give yourselves some time to adjust to head phones. I use the lasted bose head phones. Much more cushioning for the ears. You could always use the ear pods.

Canadian art scene has been a continuing mystery to we in the US. When i was a student at calarts a guy a couple years ahead of me decided to do graduate work in Canada. I asked why? Why there? He said: "Look at what was going on there in the early sixties, there's something happing and I don't believe it's dead."
Lol and we Canadians are like look at what was happening in New York with the Art scene lol abstract artist have a much harder time here. I want in the USA market lol
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist Well, I've lived most of my life in Los Angeles and artists have been priced out of affordable work--live-in studio space. Most of the artists I know of have relocated out of California. I'm now in Albuquerque New Mexico after living in so many cities here. I'm enthralled by the vistas here. As far as representation here in the US, have you tried LA, Atlanta, Chicago, Santa Fe even St Louis? Years ago I was apprenticed to painter/critic Sharon Gold (brilliant artist, cover of artforum mag at age 30) in NY while attending calarts. I spent much of my time reasearching galleries for her both domestic and overseas. A more than a few resulted in fruition for her. I think it is often a misfortune that being an artist often translates into a prolonged desk job which involves endless research and submissions. But, keep up your endeavors, please. You obviously got some important work going on. Best to you.
I love it seeing you dance around, and makes me want to do the same. Go girl!
Having fun while I’m making art is important to me. I never want making art to feel like a “job”. So studio time is light happy and full of energy. 😊

Wow, this is a massive painting. I haven't yet finished watching the whole thing. When did projects like this stop being "scary", Lori? And do you work with local canvas manufacturers?
Oh I was nervous😂😂😂 but I broke the project down into sections so it wasn't so overwhelming fo me. That helped me a lot
Where did you find lumber that wasn't bent? Or did you pay carpenter to make your frame? How much?
I don't make my frames...no time for that. I just paint them
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist you paint the frames? This must be costly. $$$
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist so you have a carpenter make them. Then you or an assistant stretched them, then you paint on the canvas?
It's a company that makes the frames and stretches them.
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist must be pricey.
Wow I’m a tarmac man put I want to be a 👨🎨 painter there is a painter in me I love love love this beautiful amazing your amazing 🤩 I want to be you creating is amazing 🖼️🖼️🖼️love you talking us through this thank you the creation the mental planning brilliance 💪
Oh gosh thank you so much!!! Get out there and paint!
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist haha I think u may have posted the wrong answer to the wrong question Lori but I have new info on headphones now so, always learning
You don't prime the canvas over the plaster???
no there is no need to. it's an acrylic emulsion with marble dust added. You could mix the paint right in and paint impasto style if you wanted too.
oh OK. I tried impasto
not for me.
❤
😊
Hi🙂 love the process....Inktense blocks are quite expensive and if you are interested in buying them, staples has them on sale right now ($10.97 for 12). Love your artwork❤. Have a nice day🙂 Ps. I already asked on Instagram how you varnish huge pieces but I can't even imagine how you gonna do these ones 😉.
Oh that’s nice thank you. I’m a zone member at Deserres so I get a great discount cause I spend so much lol
Looooong brush hahaha
Where can i find big canvas like that ?!
I had them custom made.😊
Could you paint something that is far less extreme abstract? Something that has a person in it? I would love to see it.
LOL I'm an abstract artist....I have no desire to add anything representational in my work. 😂🥰
I am looking for large canvases that size?
What music do you listen to??
Everything from rock to Soca 😊
hi what is that you are using is it charcoal stick?
I say everything I’m using in the video 😊
Can you tell us what music you were listening to?
I honestly don't know...I don't keep track of what music i listen to while i'm paintings.
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist You just seem to be having a lot of fun! Music is so important
: )
@@paul_domici Music is my everything!!!lol
Would have been great to see the photo you were working from as a reference
Yes I know but I decided from the start that I wasn't going to show the original image. That helped to keep the stress down for me.
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist ah I see. Yes I can imagine the comments if you varies from the reference. It looked great in the end. Looking forward to seeing them all in situ!!
@@EllenMcDermott Exactly Ellen lol 🥰
Absolutely gorgeous, perfectly done
I'm so glad that I found your channel
And I love the colors that you used
I'm a new subscriber please stay connected and stay safe 🥀
Thank you so much! Still very early on in this piece. I have a lot more painting to do to get this project completed. :)
What is the Spray called that tightens the canvas fibres?
I’m sure there are a ton of different names I just good canvas spray tightener. Lol
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist I've never heard of it before. I'll check around...🤔
I was never any good with stretching. My instructor actually said-just for me, buy them already made since mine were so warped.
It does take some time to learn the skill.
How an artist make commissioned abstract art????
WUNDERSCHÖN !!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Canadian art scene has been a continuing mystery to we in the US.
Good job can I come to help you,,,
lol I work alone much better but thank you
Haha I just said to myself, I wonder what she’s listening too. You then said “ I’m listening to music “.
Hope you get paid well for going back and forth.. Lol
haha walks of back and forth right haha
E si ferma pure a pensare dove buttare la prossima pennellata!? Come se cambiasse qualcosa! Mah!?😑
