    You can see Marlon looks distraught when he mentions the potential death of Truman. All those years of being best friends really hit home for him.

      Exactly he had to be with Truman his whole life and despite it being forced upon Truman as well as him being an actor, he is his friend but feels morally conflicted as he knows that Truman wants to leave but has to convince him otherwise.

      It's called familiarity. He's known Truman all his life so there's some kind of emotional attachment. Maybe he has some real feelings of friendship for truman. Still it just wasn't enough for him to tell Truman the truth.

    • @KombatGod
      @KombatGod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      @@lynnpabontheelitehero6579 I think you summarized it perfectly. Everybody is just saying "oh Marlon truly feels sorry for Truman, he's a good guy" or the opposite "no, he's worse than anybody else, because he lies to his face and only feels sorry for himself" while really it's a mix of both, and having complex characters is one of the great things about this movie.
      There also is the thing that maybe he really only started to feel this way for him when Truman started to want to see the rest of the world. As long as Truman was content with his life, Marlon didn't question his role, after all he too was raised in that environment so it was his normality.
      Maybe what we see in the movie is the beginning of Marlon's conscience, so if Truman changed his mind and didn't try to escape maybe there'd come a point when Marlon would snap and tell him the truth.

    Has anyone noticed the intonation with which Marlon asked the director about Truman's death? It wasn't a question from the "what if" category. The question was asked as if it was already predetermined by the script... After all, why ask this question if Truman isn't 90 years old and every participant in this show cares about his safety? As Truman has become too suspicious lately, it seems the director has made the decision to kill him and start the show anew using the infant of the new actress... This is where the truly dark side of this deleted scene...

    The comment from Truman's "best friend" is so chilling. You realize in that moment they are actually planning to kill Truman, when his life is deemed no longer worth watching, replacing him with the child. Good job by the editor cutting this one, it ups the sinister undertones beyond what they should've been.

    • @wanderlustwarrior
      @wanderlustwarrior 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's not what the line was saying. The "best friend" was basically fed up with how cavalier they're being over the lives of Truman, themselves, and everyone involved. But he can't really do anything about it, so the most he could do was say the quiet part out loud in a cast meeting to needle the director. The real chilling thing is the lack of response.

    One thing I noticed about how Harris portrays Christof is that he exhibits similar traits to a director he famously punched out. Not sure if it was intentional on Weir's part or Harris' part, but everything Christof does from his tendency to wear black, to his obsession with water and water related disasters and finally his control freak mannerisms, steer solely in the direction of 80s James Cameron. Hell, both directors nearly drowned their "star."

    They cut out a lot from the script and the movie with Marlon's actor actually becoming sympathetic with Truman. This scene is more proof of that with him joking about what are we going to do next to him pretty much. The movie still works without those moments but it would have worked fine too if they kept it. Kinda sorry they didn't. I like seeing some of the actors actually feeling guilty about what they do and not just being robots as they are portrayed as in the final version of the movie with these parts cut.

      and you think in the real world you have any rights? we are raised to believe the illusion of having rights, but you see with the phone that right for privacy is an illusion, the phone companies record all the data, gps even in flight mode etc. and you think you have rights? That's naive.. they use the data, and then tell you that you have rights if data is being misused... but how should you ever prove it? the data is saved on some servers on some unreachable and military guarded island.. you can know you're being spied on the moment you use their service, but you cannot possibly prove it... and they can say you have data abuse rights.. yes to fight your neighbor if he takes a picture of you naked in the garden without your approval, but these rights are of no use if you want to go against the real deal: phone manufacturers and their data collectors! If people don't want data to go to these elite sources, they just have to stop using phones. But what people aim to do is keep on using phones (because of addiction) while trying to fight for their privacy rights.. thats just as naive.. they'll always just say hey we solved it and create the illusion that your data is safe now.. while keep on spying people's phones BECAUSE THEY PRODUCE THEM

    From a storytelling and characterisation standpoint I think this was criminal to cut. It doesn't just give us some worldbuilding behind the scenes on the world Truman inhabits, more critically it underlines the cruel emotional detachment of the entire cast towards Truman. For all the film's many accomplishments I don't think the final cut really succeeds at this, Meryl is the only character who is really shown to be dispassionate about Truman's wellbeing. You'd be forgiven for coming away thinking Marlon and most of the rest of the cast did in some way 'feel' their relationships to Truman. Maybe Marlon did, but there's an element of professional detachment - he ultimately does choose the show over the friendship. The invisible hand of Christof really makes itself known here; the net around Truman's life is encapsulated in this script reading sequence.

    • @mrlionX
      @mrlionX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I think the intention was to keep most of the behind the scenes a mystery and focus more on Truman's changing experience. Otherwise it would be more of a horror-type of film where everyone is a sinister character look up at someone in a cage. I think it was fine how it was made. There are still a lot of details that were left out even from the original script and the deleted scenes, like what was Christof's motivation to make something like this or how it was even made legal. However, the deleted scenes are still pretty interesting.

    I'm on the fence as to which way to take Marlon's comments. At first I thought this scene did a great job at showcasing Marlon's total disregard for Truman's well-being. The film itself really seemed to make Marlon out to be a self-absorbed and disingenuous actor who is entirely apathetic to Truman's plight. However there was always enough grey area in the delivery that left room for Marlon to possibly perhaps genuinely care about Truman, just not as much as he cared about being a famous actor with a nice salary.
    Anyway, this scene initially struck me as Marlon casually questioning the show's protocol in the event of Truman's death as if he was inquiring about lunch. Total disregard for Truman. Yet when I watch again, I see in Marlon's face that he's not sharing in the excitement and glee the other actors are feeling. That suggests to me that he could simply be asking this question to spite his co-workers.
    Still, though... Marlon gave me awful vibes the entire movie. He was crucial in keeping Truman contained and seemed to take no issue in gaslighting Truman and acting as Christof's main tool in keeping Truman imprisoned in the false reality he was held captive in.

He like truman is trapped. yes he has one and freedom but without him, truman has no real friends.he can risk telling him its fake and losing a wage, thousands of jobs, trumans sanity, trumans life if the producers didn't want him dead, and that's if he believed hi. with cameras on truman 24 hours a day there is no way to tell him without the audience and the creator knowing. it would be suicideto tell him so he becomes locked in this place, acting as a betrayal. the scene where he talks to truman about it being fake the bridge shows his anger and sadness but he can't risk it, for his own sake and because he knows what the creators are like, they might just kill of truman. that line about when truman dies, i believe is testing water to check how far they will go.

      He wasn't his real father, Truman is the result of an unwanted pregnancy maybe his real mother doesn't even have the support of the father that's why she gave away his son as if he were nothing

    Sounds like they had a plan to knock Truman off after the baby is born and the sick cycle starts all over again. Truman is getting to close to finding out the truth so he must go.

    What's messed up was that, had Truman not escape, Claudia's relationship would have been slightly better than Hannah's. Don't get me wrong it's still scummy about what they are doing, but in terms of thinking like they do, Hannah/Meryl was a mistake because she didn't seem too thrilled about marrying him let alone wanting a baby with him. Whereas judging by Claudia's expression she seemed more than thrilled to do it for the art of doing it.

    I always wondered what would happen if Christolf died. Eventually they would have shown Truman the door and send him out with $5 (not a typo) and said good lick.

      +arcotroll They said in the script just then that they would start a two channel show. One for Truman and one for his kid.

      I assumed Christof would have a successor. In this world there are probably numerous directors who would jump at the chance to direct at least a few seasons of the Truman show.

    I can see why this was deleted. Didn't fit with the flow, and it also made Truman's confidants a lot more cold than the movie has them being portrayed. Sure, maybe they really are this way, but the film's tone doesn't allow for this much darkness, especially Truman's friend saying something like, "So when Truman dies..."

      That is how deleted scenes work. They start out in the script, then they're filmed, and then the director or whoever decides to remove it from the final edit.

    The point that Marlon is getting at in the end is pretty dark when you think about it. He wants trumans offspring (however many children/grandchilden he has) to be on TV since he says avoids the question that marlon asks him about going back to a one channel format.
