  • We’re finally done working the Sugar Beet Harvest, but we can’t stay long camping in North Dakota! Freezing temps are blanketing the midwest and we have to tow our RV camper over 1,000 miles in three days to escape the cold.
    Make sure you stick around until the end, because Joe receives his final Beet Harvest paycheck. How much can we put towards our Alaska goal?

    Nice work! The banana bread scene was hilarious, my wife thought so too 😂.
    Thats some good pay for 2 weeks of working. Glad to see the truck running smooth & getting you guys south. We moved to Florida from WI to escape the brutal winters and absolutely loving our first winter here!

      I'm glad you liked my torture 🤣. I sure didn't. LOL
      So if all goes according to plan - which I'm sure you've figured out by now that when it comes to Joe and Kalyn not much seems to be going according to plan lately - we'll be going through Canada on the way up and possibly hitting a couple of Canadas national parks in their should season on the way. We've considered taking the ferry one way but at the moment that's not in the plan. We shall see though.
      Smart move going to Florida. We did that in 2013 from central New York and never regretted it. Now we just chase the sunshine...most of the time. -J

    Put your visors down and leave them down, when you turn the defroster on the visor causes the air to be forced back down there for defrosting the window faster. And if setting over night, pull the wipers away from the windshield- when filling the windshield filler tank, buy one gallon of the windshield washer fluid, and pour 1/2 into another gallon jug, then take a cheap bottle of alcohol from the dollar store and pour 1/2 in each jug, pour one cup of Dawn soap into each and fill with water. Then Shake and use in filler tank, the alcohol will keep the water from freezing and the Dawn soap will help with the bugs and road grime, I was a long haul trucker for 20 years- and that’s what we did, I would also use that Rain-x on my windshield- It Works Good Luck 🍀 and Happy Trails. 🤠♥️✝️🐾🦴🇺🇸🌲🍀🐿️

      if we ever meet on the road ill make some of the lentil bread recipe i've been creating, and we can trade.
      the lentil bread is high protein, lower calorie than your average bread, and with a couple tweaks it's really good as a flatbread or frybread.
      so it's great to add some extra herbs and cumin to and eat with curry or hummus, or mix in basil and tomato and use as a pizza crust, ooor loaded up with cinnamon and sugar kinda like a healthier donut that doesn't taste healthy.

    Glad you got the truck sorted out. Good your able to stash the 1500 into “Alaska fund”. Might I suggest sticking 2-300 (maybe out of the 2nd year bonus) into a “truck fund”. Stash it and if needed will be available for any little things that might come up. Can always be tapped if needed for emergency or living expense.
    That pile of beets was INSANE. What happens to them now? Not many of us know anything about how these operations work.
    Glad its over for you. I know what a relief it is to get done long hour (+12) jobs for 2-3-4-5 weeks. I have done a bunch of these over several years up to 2 months at Nuke plants (in a camper/ or motorhome) and there are 2 good thing about them….when they are over AND when the money hits your account.👍🏻🤑💰💰 Still a good life experience.
    Look forward to your next stop and adventure.

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much for stopping by again! Yes we are planning on getting a much more formal emergency fund set up too. We're starting to feel the financial crunch we got ourselves into over 2021-2022 ease a little which is so encouraging. We're probably going to have to strongly consider setting aside money for a new truck in the near future. It's always the challenge is figuring out how many things you can save for with the $2 you have left over 😂 (not a complaint! Life is just always like that.)
      As far as the beets, in the Drayton District they have somewhere around 20 of those piles that will be taken to the sugar plant (in Drayton) one truck load at a time from October through about April. Then the factory is shut down until September.
      100% agree on the experience of these types of jobs. It's also fun just to get a different perspective on something you didn't even know existed before.

    Yall really need a 4x4 wheel drive truck, doing what yall are doing, and I would suggest a removable wrench with extra nylon straps - at least 100 ft. That can handle the weight of your combined weight- you should also wrap that foil bubble wrap around your propane tanks. There are wire cable that’s used for wrapping your water lines, that you can use that foil tape that you can tape the electric heater cord on the tank to keep your water from freezing, if your worried about the pipes freezing under the cabinets then just take the cabinet doors off and set in that cabinet- or prop it up to leave a crack for the heat to get in, that foil bubble wrap should be installed in all the cabinets in the back on the outer walls, and back of closets too, I live in a 1963 Stream Line travel trailer year round, you should consider making out of that 2 in fiber board a skirting for around your trailer. Keeping wind from blowing under your trailer will make a Big difference in temperature on the inside and also the floors. I know y’all move a lot - but during the winter months you don’t want your pipes to freeze and or bust, that turns into a major Headache- Good Lick and Happy Trails - 🤠♥️✝️🐾🦴🌲🇺🇸🍀🐿️

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hi there and thanks so much for watching.
      I'm not sure which meal you are referring to since I didn't do a 12 hour shift in this video, but that's honestly not a big deal since in our family dynamic I generally do most of the cooking anyway.
      When I lost my job in 2015 my wife single handedly provided for our family through a business that she built from the ground up which had included years of her basically working for free.
      Now, she's in the process of turning her business around as well as doing a big chunk of our video content planning. So while I'm off on a 12 hour shift it's not like she's home playing video games. In the home she also does the meal planning (a task I hate with the passion of 100 burning suns) along with keeping the RV orderly because, well, I've never seen a flat surface that I couldn't clutter up in 2 seconds flat. She also keeps track of everything...schedule, stuff, like...everything. If we miss an appointment, payment, or something it's ALWAYS because I failed to let her know it existed in the first place. I honestly do not know how she keeps track of it all.
      All this to say that yes, sometimes I might cook a meal prior to a 12 hour shift...and that's A-OK in my book.
      On another note, I don't know if you saw this or not, but the amount of laughter between the two of us during the whole banana muffin endeavor... I'd eat a banana muffin every day if it brought that genuine joy to my wife each day.
      I choose to be happy and I generally find that when you are counting responsibilities in order to create that elusive, perfect household equality rather than always looking for opportunities to lighten your spouses load - happiness does not follow. (Free relationship advice from Joe)

    Just started watching your show and love it. However, I left the room during the eating of the banana bread. If you have ever had to eat something you did not want to eat you know why this scene was cringe for me. But still love your show. Also, I got to a point where I disliked bananas. Didn’t know why so I my son didn’t eat all is banana and I finished and has a very severe allergic reaction. I was told when you don’t or won’t eat something your body is telling you things. After 30 years of life I was highly allergic to bananas

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't blame you for leaving the room. 😁 But Kalyn wouldn't put me in harms way. We have bananas in our smoothies every morning so she knows I'm not alergic. I've tried banana bread a few times...it just triggers my gag reflex so it was a funny thing to do for the bet - I was never in harms way.
      Remember...if I had won the bet Kalyn would have been going for a swim in a pretty gross river....in North Dakota.... In 30 degree weather. 😂 I think of the two of us my having to eat something I don't like was much less severe. -J

    In the past 10 days watching almost all of your work, here's what I think(for what its worth); your all time low(grief wise) has been past with the truck issue and lack of sleep. I think your channel could easily support a 100k subscription. With your increasing $$ from TH-cam you select only the most interesting work assignments for TH-cam content. More time will be spent focusing on content of the nomad experience which takes you up to 150K in subcriptions. All together the effort will contribute to your 100k-150K a year income which will allow you to upgrade your truck and mobil home. My 2 cents.....

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I appreciate your two cents.
      We actually find that what most people find interesting is the every day stuff. What you might see as interesting (Renting a boat and exploring a unique national park) is not nearly as exciting to viewers than working on a truck for 16 days, or hustling your butt gate guarding. 🤷🏼 -J
