So actually Nagito also has another traumatising moment in this life so when he was little he had a dog The dog saved his life by ending up killed by a truck instead of Nagito, In the game we can see that it always infects him because when Akane strangles Nagito he thanks her by saying that he's going to see this dog again, then we can notice in the game that Nagito doesn't really care about this life and ask many time to the other to kill him qwq

There's actually a lot more things that happened to nagito but they never specified them. You can also know this based of the rules of his luck and one of them is bad = good, which basically means whenever something bad happens something good comes out of it. For example his death was something bad that happened to him but lead to a good outcome of them finding the traitor aka chika.

Kokichi: Abused by his on parents dont got feed well, he got to hide in small places (This is why he is small and yeah-) He got sexual assateld, got bullied, Pre-Shuichi wanted him in danganronpa, Kokichi accept that because Pre-Shuichi was his only friend, He lies to protect his self, lied to be the mastermind to end the killing game, he used Gonta to show everyone he is not weak, Kokichi just wanted attetion, Gonta was only who treated him like a friend.

Also I adore kokichi and that head cannon does not change my opinion. And if you are being hostile and believing in that dumbass head cannon that provides no fact at all that kokichi was abused and neglected by the way. And just because he's skinny and short does not mean he wasn't feed properly as a child I know because I have family members like that and they eat just fine and one of them my brother so I know for a fact that he eats well because he eats more than me .
