I loved them all, but I prefer Buescher since they are the most under priced vintage saxes out there and love the engineering. Your style reminds me somewhat of the late, great Bud Freeman. That is a compliment, sir!
I listened to this blind at the phone was in my pocket. I have a 1928 conn and is soon as I heard the 3rd clip I knew that was the conn. That being said I think I liked the 400 the best!
You sound fantastic. This is great comparison, of 3 wonderful horns. So of these, the Buescher has the warmth and fullness I prefer. There's a lot of attitude flinging around on that New Wonder. It all sounds excellent, and for my 2 cents, I'd choose the Super 400. Cheers!
With the 10M you were cookin', with the Buescher you were sailin', with the NW you were sizzlin' It was just a joy to listen, though I think I liked you on the NW best. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the nice comments. And I think you are right about the tonal differences in these recording. Still it seems strange as the New Wonder sound fuller and warmer to my ears in realtime with most mouthpieces I use. Yet in this recording it seems to be a little thinner sounding. It might also be the mouthpiece being a better match with the 10M. The New Wonder played with a 50's Tone Master is fuller and warmer I think as can be heard in my other vid.
Great playing and great video. Thanks! I was pleasantly surprised at how close the Buescher and the 10m sound in your hands. Years ago I had a couple 10ms, probably won't ever find another, but I do have a Buescher 400 TH&C. Loved the sound with the Brilhart. I have an Ebolin that I don't think I have ever played on the Buescher. Usually I play the B400 with a Lakey piece that turns it into a snarling beast. Now I will have to try the Buescher with the Brilhart piece to see if I can get close to the tones you are getting. Yes I have a couple Zephyrs but they don't get much play time since I got the TH&C. Again, that's for the awesome video.
Brilliant playing, in the groove! Very enjoyable and interesting to hear these instruments. Has given me new inspiration to enjoy my old 10M. Many thanks!
Great comparison and very well played. You sound good on all the horns. I slightly prefer the 10M, followed closely by the Buescher (sounded a bit sweeter but less full than the 10M) and New Wonder (sounded a bit thinner than both other horns). Thanks for sharing.
got mine!!! 10M naked lady 1947 rolled tones holes.... love iT.. I bought also a new selmer J44 profesional, and I sold it a year after. I guess I played it 5 times... cos the Conn sounds like heaven!!!!!!! It requires a little more effort to keep the notes in tune, but the rest is endless enjoyment
lovely playing man like to hear compare with a modern horn I bet you wood still get that vintage sound I have a1954 king zephyr but I will never play like you magic
Great job on these fine old horns. Actually, what surprises me most is not the differences but the similarities! Without a direct A/B/C comparison, I'd find it hard to tell them apart. I wonder if your position relative to the mic changed in the recordings? The NW sounds closer to the mic - which could account for the discrepancy you noted in the previous comment (less room acoustic to warm up the tone in recording).
Hello, All three horns sound wonderful when you play them....do you have a favorite in terms of their ability to play, either easier to blow or finger quickly? I think I prefer the sound of the Conn's. Do you have a favorite? Thank you. mike
Thanks, i have an early Zephyr Tenor sn 173,xxx, i think its more a Voll-true despite the supurb Zephyr engraving. I love it, but need to work on my playing.
Is the Buescher was the Top Hat & Cane version? I am looking at one of the pre-Selmer 400 (without "Super") without the Top Hat & Cane engraving. I wondered if there is any difference between the Super and non Super 400.
Very nice playing...dont think theres that much difference in the sound of these horns..the player is the one who makes the sound...ive been a pro almost 50 years...to all sax players: no matter what horn or mpc u play...U WILL ALWAYS SOUND LIKE U!
I like the sound of the Buescher as opposed to the 10m, it sounds gentler, more muted but a nice sound that reminds me of my '39 SML Rev A with metal Ottolink 7* STM & a 3s jazz select D'addario reed. The Buescher is crisper than mine though, must be the reed. I'm still getting too much spread in the sound on mine which I think I can overcome with practice to some extent by working on the embouchure, or cast around for a better mouthpiece and reed. The Conn NW sounds like something between the two, I've got one, 1930, which I play with the same mp and reed, , but, again I've got to think about the mouthpiece and reed now to get the sound I'm after, darker, more centred with depth and a bit more edge to it and a sweet clean note in the top octave.
Thank you for your reaction. Unfortunately I have not tried any pre-1960 10M's without RTH (yet). So I am not sure. Maybe an expert by experience should chime in. However as far I know the design of the body and the neck of the 10M has not changed until the last one produced. Not even when they were produced in Mexico from 1970, apart from the alleged decline of quality of the keywork since then. I just can't imagine if there would be any audible sound difference between the RTH and STH. Ofcourse the RT were designed to give the pads a 'softer' landing. Would that affect the tone? I am not sure. I am not aware whether the thickness of the copper material has changed over the years during the 60's. Because this would indeed have more effect on the sound. That said I also play a '68 12M with STH and it thunders and is as warm sounding like you would expect from a good Conn. I too wonder how it would compare to a pre-war 12M.
New wander 1924bsavdestrwggiarsibnelle basse e belle alte non diventandobflautatinelle alte e troppo scuro nelle basse. Di cuore comprerei m10 Ma ragionando i direi new wonder.

I am sorry for my delayed reaction. Thank you very much!

Toll gespielt und ein guter Vergleich. Mir gefällt der Buescher 400 am besten 💪🏽
Vielen Dank!

You got a good authentic period sound from the horns. Liked them all!
You make them all sound great! Just goes to show it's mostly the player, not the horn.
i love the growl inflection you add on the top notes! I'm trying to emulate that myself haha
Buescher Super 400 was a little warmer compared to others two
Yup, I agree. Thanks for listening and your comment.
c'est indéniable !!!
Finde ich auch.
10M Conn is a colossal sound! Buescher aint too bad either.
Jeez, that was sooo good. Thanks pal.
they all sound great but that Buescher was great

Conn 10m has more swing tone. Love it
So Good!
Great tone man!
It’s bit of an unfair comparison as I expect you would sound amazing playing a metal tube!

It's a toss up between the C

Thanks! It is 'Lady be good'.

The 10M is pretty raw and brash, the Super 400 is a lot more warm and large, and the NW1 was a bit in between.
Could you please tell me if the tone of the 1936 Conn 10m with rolled tone holes is better than the one from after 1960 with straight tone holes?
