The first rubber powered model airplane was Penaud's Planophore which flew 131 feet in 11 seconds, 1871, Tuileries garden, Paris. In the early days, the competition was for distance flown, note the measuring tape in the video. Models were advertised as flying 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, 1 mile and eventually it became impractical to measure the distances. Duration became the criteria. Models were then flown in circles, staying close to the launch site. Note that the rubber motors are being finger wound. The Bing Autoplan seen at the end of this video was driven by a compressed air engine, note the size of the fuselage, which was the air tank. The AMA Museum has a measuring wheel and a Bing Autoplan in their collection.
This may be the coolest model flying footage ever. Just incredible what these people were able to do with the limited resources available at the time!

Beautiful models, nicely dressed people and a swept back wing design (0:55)
Great days
I almost screamed when I saw the model with the swept wings! That guy is 30 years ahead of everyone else.
Fantastyczne, mam nadzieję, że za 100 lat ktoś będzie oglądał z równym zainteresowaniem nasze obecne modelarskie dokonania. Pozdrawiam.
1:00 a swept back wing design. I associated them with jet -age. Amazing to see them so early in model aviation.
Wow amazing video! I will have to share this, very very cool
Good stuff !! A young Leroy was seen , last name was Cox. Hes the one that got me into this Lifelong Hobby. 😁
What the heck??? The dawn of rubber power? I second Mr. Finn: "The coolest model flying footage ever."
This is so cool.
I love this stuff
I want a hat. LOL. Thanks for the video.
Fascinating film "well done" wonder what they would made of the r/c models now.
Ah! Note the lack of A-frame pushers, even by this time. And the presence of scale models!
Does anyone know exactly where in Frankfurt thus was filmed?
Yes , but not me .
Were they flying before or after church!?
THEY need moveable camera mount or a camera drone . Time travel
👍👍
Did they go to church before or after the competition?
Virtually everyone wearing a hat
