Indeed it was ash. No, nothing under it, just popped straight through.
What is a shrink pot, or what is it used for?
Called shrink because it is the log shrinking as it dries out that captures the base in place and seals it if made well. Used to store anything you like. Could be sugar, pulses, flour, honey... can be used as a cup if it seals well
