    Many women who are very obviously not wealthy are walking around with their hair done, nails done, everything did but 2 months late on rent. There's no way a lot of these not well-off women are able to pay their bills if they're spending allllll this money on beauty services unless they're doing something illegal on the side.

    Fast food workers get $20 an hour. If you paid your braider $20 an hour and it took 36 hours to finish your hair, it would cost $720 without her even supplying hair. I don't understand why women sit for hours or days to get their hair braided but complain that their wash day is way too long. 🤷🏾‍♀️

      People don't calculate that you are blocking off a lot of the braider's/stylists' time to do only your hair. if they had 4 clients that day at 200 each....that's 800 minimum. My stylist charges 200 for a full-service press and trim..... and he sees about 8 clients a day and I still have all my edges and no heat damage. I see him 4 times a year. I dunno how long she plan to wear those micros for.

    To answer: "Protected from what?"
    I've been told that our hair breaks off for 3 reasons: lack of moisture, over-manipulation, and our hair rubbing up against the rough fibers of our clothing. (This is why we often can't grow our hair past our shoulders and why we use silk scarves/bonnets).
    Brais are supposed to help us address all of this. Easy access to scalp (except with sew ins) for moisturizing the scalp. The hair can't be over manipulated (giving it a rest), and the ends of the hair are wrapped up by fake hair and "protected." So they dont rub up on abrasive fibers creating breakage.

    • @CoffeeCuties777
      @CoffeeCuties777  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +10

      Thanks for answering 🤎and if done correctly I feel like it can be used as protective but the issue is women are getting them too often, leaving them in too long and not performing good before and after care which leads to more breakage and hair loss than before unfortunately 🤎

    • @sandramorryssa
      @sandramorryssa 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @CoffeeCuties777 very true and some styles don't work for everyone's hair. For instance, when your hair is finer, you can't usually use styles that put too much weight on the hair.

    I’m frugal and I’m wise about how I spend my money. My fiancé makes a great income, and he is the big spender, and I’m spoiled. I wouldn’t even want him you spend $2,000 for braids. If I did asked , he would think that’s an exorbitant price. I understand beauty service is more expensive these days. I rather use that money towards a vacation, or put in my savings account. I have to be a millionaire to spend that much on a hair service. I would do crochet braids. I won’t tell a woman what to do with her money. Sounds like her hair is going to start breaking off at the demarcation line as it grows out. Braiders also aren't hairstylist so to expect the care and standards of a hairstylist is unreasonable. Legally they aren't allowed to offer hairstylist services even something as basic as washing. They aren't licensed professionals so legally they don't have any standards they need to adhere to. As far as pricing I think people can charge whatever they like and if someone is willing to pay the price nothing wrong with that. Braiders exist in a space adjacent to licensed professionals but definitely aren't hairstylist. I do think that braiders should be regulated like the rest of us but considering black hair still isn't specifically taught in cosmetology school I'm not holding my breath.

    While I can appreciate the labor and skill it takes to be an exceptional braider, I’m not willing to paying hundreds of dollars for hair and feel that at times, the prices charged are exploitative. I have learned simple styles for my natural hair, including how to two strand twist/flat twist. I see my stylist quarterly for treatments/trims/styling. On occasion, I will see a braider to braid my hair, however, I really only do this when I’m preparing to be on vacation and the most I’m willing to spend is around the $200 area. I prefer to wear my natural hair out. Doing this has taught me to learn my hair and care for and manage it well and not depend on braids which can lead to damage if relied on too heavily. When it comes to the skyrocketing prices some of these stylists charge, we each have the purchasing power and can vote with our pockets whether or not we want to pay it or find another alternative that will save our hard earned money.

    Soooo braiders should be paid more than people who dye hair? What about people who cut hair? Once you cut hait, its gone but if you do a bad braid, you can take it out and start over. Im not buying her explanation at all. Yes, in the beginning as braider there will be some anxiety to get it right but thats with any career you go into. Thats why reasonable prices and good customer service are important.
    Should they be compensated fairly, yes. However, we need a concrete break down on what fair actually is. Some of these stylists are just charging whatever they feel like.

    I wouldn't pay $1,700 for braids. I'm also not that braider's target clientele.
    It takes time and skills to do micro waist length braids.
    And if it's just one person, that's a lot of hours. Everything can't remain $100. lol
    Not all braiders are licensed and legally they cannot wash hair.
    Lastly, running a business isn't for the weak. There's a lot that goes into it. Professional, licensed hairstylists must make a living. Not everyone is their target clientele.

      That’s a good point too-the charges we’re seeing are, in fact, their living standards.
      Though it also goes to show, every profession isn’t meant to be a main hustle financially-unless you’re just that good at what you do. Similar to any artistry really, painting, singing, graphic design. Only note-worthy artists are actually talented enough to make money they can survive on. Plenty of amazing artists do not produce art as their main hustle, it’s a side hustle, or even a hobby/personal expense. Braiding used to be a side hustle, now young/new braiders are shifting the entire market to support their living standard. And…consumers are letting them 🤷🏽‍♀️.

    These prices are out of touch with reality compared to the quality of services offered. I’ve never met a stylist, home or salon, that treats my hair as well as I do. Also, for these exorbitant prices I expect their clients to have long and healthy hair, which they never do. Paying $1,000+ for a style when you don’t even take care of your hair is crazy work. 😂
    I also saw Coffee Cuties mention the woman that paid $2,000+ has been served an eviction notice. I think there’s some underlying issues there, sincerely. Mayowa’s World posted a video this week that I think plays a part in this discussion regarding natural hair and how it intersects with texturism, conservatism, and the economy.
