Jarrod D rode a motorized bicycle from Florida to California and back. It looks like a rear wheel friction drive setup (3hp 79cc $100 Harbor Freight engine) is the simplest & most reliable method. Trying it in the summer heat would probably melt away the bicycle tires though. Train ride looks much easier than motorized bicycle ride though.
