    Welcome to my hometown! One thought: it was my understanding that the 1:12 incline wasn't necessarily a problem for the horses travelling uphill (I don't know, maybe it'd make pulling the carriages a bit more difficult), but rather for the horses making the downhill journey, whose carriages would start rolling freely and then immediately run them over. I'm not sure where I read that, and I could well be wrong... although both might've been factors in the end. Anyway, thanks for stopping by.

    • @TheTimTraveller
      @TheTimTraveller  4 ปีที่แล้ว +175

      Cheers Kelvin! You may well be right - my sources simply said that horses couldn't handle the incline, rather than saying whether the problem was going up it, or down it. I'll pin your comment because 1. it's an interesting footnote and 2. perhaps a local expert will stop by with a definitive answer :)

      I live surrounded by Amish and Mennonite family’s living in the Appalachian Mountains. I think the problem is something more. Many of our roads, paved and otherwise, approach 1-12 pitch. Maybe the surface or turning them around? I’m amazed at what a horse can do. Great video anyways.

      Small carriages aren't usually a big deal. Some carriages have brakes that help manage the downhill roll. If those aren't available, then the solution is to back down the hill using the power of the horses to keep the carriage from running out of control. My guess is that it was an excuse: It may be that the lady of Nottingham simply didn't like going through a tunnel after the Duke had decided to build one, so he made up that excuse about the carriages to keep from admitting that he was beholden to his Lady.

    My old house is in your video, just 200 yards up the road from here. Before those new houses were built there was a fence and high gate fronting our road, and no lighting in the tunnel. I often used it as a short cut to get home after the pub, walking very slowly through the pitch black tunnel, and then running full pelt to the gate through the wooded area (where the houses are now).
    The late Justin Fashanu lived in one of those new houses while he was playing for Nottingham Forest, bless him.

      @AnthonyIlstonJones 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@miroslavmilan I don't know about the manual variety, but most electric wheelchairs available nowadays can handle a slope of 1 in 7 easily. That was the standard for access ramps in England as long ago as the 1980s (I know this because I used to build them back then).
      Also, I think the problem with the 1 in 12 gradient is not so much the uphill (horses are incredibly strong animals, hence their images are carved in several English chalk hillsides - not sure what the ancients at Uffington were smoking though....) as the downhill, horses are not usually fond of being pushed.

      @Peter Rumsby It's not just socialism, I think it's beaurocracy in general. Tourism value is something that is hard to put an actual value on, but repair of infrastructure with extra wear and tear on it is all to easy to quantify. Ironically most beaurocrats are so bad at it we STILL get a spate of roadworks leading up to the new tax year, as councils hurry to spend their budgets in the fear they'll get a reduced amount the following year if they have a surplus.

    I like the "ey up mi duck" at the beginning, and generally acknowledging the existence of the East Midlands. For those outside region, 'there be dragons'. Great video, it's a pity the Derby Road entrance doesn't match The Park Estate and Ropewalk entrances!
    Factoid 1: "Duck" in this context, is a corruption of the Old English "ducas", meaning duke. A term of respect, turned term of affection (influenced by "hen" or "chick", perhaps). "Ey up" is an Old Norse greeting, translates something like "heads up".
    Factoid 2: The exact 'slap-bang centre' of England by the way, is a field near Fenny Drayton in Leicester; if you were to put England on a pin, that's where would balance perfectly. If you wanted to do that... well Ordnance Survey did, albeit figuratively.

    Nottingham is an amazing place with lots of historical heritage. One of my favorite places is a pub on Maid Marion way called Ye olde Salutation inn and apart from being one of the best live music venues in Nothingham, it has a network of underground caves that are themselves a venue for poetry, drumming, singing and part of a historical walk. No trip to Nothingham would be complete without a visit.

    Great video. For reference: 1:12 incline = 8.3%. Dependent on the speed the carriage is travelling at, going up or down even a gentle incline can be quite dangerous for the horse(s) pulling it, and in adverse (wet/snowy) conditions going in either direction can prove fatal, especially if the brakes fail on the carriage. As pretty as the tunnel is I wouldn't take a horse up or down it, even without a carriage.

  • @neilbain8736
    @neilbain8736 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The Park is pretty unique in that it is lit by gas street lamps. It's quite an unusual experience because the intensity, spread, beam or whatever the relevant parameters, are so much different. There's also some very high kerbs to trip over too.
    The Salutation on Mad Marion Way/Hound's Gate is an equal contender for the oldest pub in the UK, based on the same name continuously and actually having been a pub from the start. Ye Trip started as the castle brewery. The Bell on Angle Row is also a contender. Some archaeologists- Time Team?- went there on a dig and discovered there had been brewing there since Saxon times, but unlike the other two there's no written records to argue over as they only go back to 1437 or thereabouts.
    The Sal has some very good caves. Quite a few pubs and most of Nottingham do. There's dedicated 3D cave maps online.

    If you find yourself in Germany sometime soon, you could check out Lemgo and the Junkerhaus, it was made by an eccentric architect who carved every single surface of the house- being inside of it feels a bit like being in a living thing, since the effect of all the carvings- at least to me- made a skeletal impression!

    Ah, random tunnels dug under bits of rock stuck in towns. Reigate, where I live has the UK’s oldest road tunnel (not that it’s used as a road anymore!) Earl Somers decided to build it to help his coach get up Reigate Hill!

    The bewilderment of walking right through the tunnel from The Park and coming out a nondescript passageway onto the Derby Road is like being dropped by the side of the I-95 at the end of the head-trip in Being John Malkovich. A portal to a different world in plain sight.
