Lost my brother to alcohol a week ago, day after Christmas. When he was struggling, in and out of rehab, I thought of this song and found some kind of solace and strength. He really wanted to be a better man. And I hope he knows I never lost faith on him, because he would've really given you the shirt on his back. And he did. Now that he's gone, I come back to this song. And the solace Is there. My brother has finally made his way back home. Hope you find something so sweet, N. Love you. Thank you for this, Brandi.
I'm a 100% disabled vet who beat my government supplied opiate addiction in 2014. It's staggering how many of us have killed ourselves. I spent 25 years on active duty and I'm thankful just to be alive. I came close. I made it. "He only took the pills when the doctor told him". That's me. All of mine were bought by Uncle Sam. I've cried a million tears over my friends and had to learn to deal with it in a different way. Sure I had and do have physical pain, but opiates were really treating my emotional pain more than my physical pain. I was lost and on 16 total medications at once. I live alone. I can't count the nights I struggled not to shoot myself. This song hits close about "finding my way back home". I'm glad I made it the right way and alive.
Thanks for sharing your experience Nomad Jeff. It gives me hope. I'm so glad you made it out--of active duty, and of opiate addition--and that you are okay. Stay well.
Thank you. I am so glad you are alive, I hope you are thriving and well, I hope you live life fully and are healing. I hope all those things for you and me.
nomad...congratulations nomad! i got hooked on benzodiapenes due to my panic/anxiety disorder. i've found that it's nearly impossible for people, including my own family to understand. it's maddening and frustrating. they think it's a weakness of character somehow. am only contacting because i know the feelings of addiction. i don't know the physical pain you have lived and live with today. my dad was crippled with 2 forms of arthritis, so i know something about it through him. am wishing you only the best....
Recently my dad told me about this song. He was friends with the guy this song was written for. It's touched my heart to think about how much effort put here. I think its really cool to think about this song. Thank you Brandy Carlile. My dad says he always cries when he hears this song. It means more than you can ever know.
This song is for all those who have been to the edge , some overcome their obstacles some did not . But all of us who have been to that share the pain of those we lost .
I'm a healthcare professional and I work specifically with a lot of people who have bipolar disorder and are much more likely than average to struggle with addiction. I have the disorder as well I get this song. It's deep, it's elegant, and it's honest. It's important. Thank you.
@@rgwak Mentally ill people need to be managed better, our cities are overflowing with homeless and drug addicted people who will never be right and it's wrong to expect that our entire civilization hinges on these lowest common denominators and as we collapse because of it, you're going to be wishing that we had done something different.
I'm a 55 year old man, married 35 years, 4 grand kids. Normally listen to classic country music but just 3 days ago heard Brandi Carlisle on WNRN in Richmond, Va. and fell in love with her music instantly. Timing was perfect as she is scheduled to play in Richmond this May. Can't wait to see the show. Thank you for your hard work and beautiful songs. Bill Stanton
You will NOT be dissappointed! I've seen her 7 times and will see her for the 8th time this spring in Boston. Cannot wait. She's absolutely amazing live. And that voice!!!
Begrudgingly went with my wife to see her in Flagstaff 4 years ago. From the first note the hair stood up on my arms and my mind was blown. I have been a fan ever since. From a married 51 year old male with kids.
We are in our 60s and discovered Brandi about 5 years ago and have seen her twice in concert. You will not be disappointed. Some of her stuff is spellbinding.
Artist don’t write songs like Brandi anymore. I cant say enough about what her music means to me. In 45 years on earth i have experienced things that would kill most people. Over the last 10-12 years….she helped me through the toughest period of my life. God, she is special. Thank you so much for doing what you do. 🙏🏼❤️
Brandi you don't know me but you have no idea how much this song is me. You just sang my life but right now I'm fighting for a different ending. Thank you for bringing awareness. And people of TH-cam please please don't let your love ones suffer. Talk to them before its to late. Trust me coming from a guy with a phone that hasn't rang in 30 years talk to them.
"Sugartooth" is a true story about a childhood friend of Brandi Carlile's brothers who had a drug addiction problem and took his own life. "They had lost someone real close to them, and I had to tell them....Maybe it's just our age, and what we're going through right now, but suddenly, everyone is someone's baby. Nobody is just a junkie anymore to us." He wasn't really known for breaking the rules When he arrived in the second year of my high school He wasn't so much of a twist of fate As a short turn up from a Southern state He was born with a sweet tooth he couldn't beat Always trying to find himself something sweet All that he found was a trouble and me Or maybe trouble just found him It was hard to hide that his heart had scars He would stay up late talking to the stars People tried to blame him for making bad choices When he was only listening to the voices And searching for some kind of deeper truth Between the lines and the Bible and living proof There's no point now to judge him in vain If you haven't been there, you don't know the pain He was a liar, but not a fraud Living proof that there was no God Just the Devil, stiff as a rod A slave to a sugartooth His life became more than he could take He found a bad habit he couldn't break Nothing could tame him and nothing could hold him He only took the pills when the doctor told him Looking to help for the something sweet To make his life feel less incomplete What in the hell are you gonna do When the world has made its mind up about you? He was a liar, but not a fraud Living proof that there was no God Just the Devil, stiff as a rod A slave to a sugartooth He wanted to be a better man Then life kicked him down like an old tin can He would give you the shirt on his back If not for a sugartooth They found him lying on his bed With a gun in his hand and a quiet head His broken heart, now, is finally gone But I know that he had to hurt for too long To think he had fought it all on his own Just to lose the battle and die alone After so many years of feeling the loss He finally made his way back home And I heard they put what was left in a box And took it to a place called Jesus Rock And scattered him all over jagged mound As a symbol to all that the peace had been found But not for a sign is left behind With a hand stuck reaching back in time To a place in which you can never unwind I hope he found something so sweet He was a liar, but not a fraud Living proof that there was no God Just the Devil, stiff as a rod A slave to a sugartooth He wanted to be a better man But life kicked him down like an old tin can He would give you the shirt on his back If not for a sugartooth Ooh, ooh, ooh, a slave to a sugartooth Ooh, ooh, ooh, a slave to a sugartooth Ooh, ooh, ooh, a slave to a sugartooth Ooh, ooh, ooh, a slave to a sugartooth
It’s funny how a song can find you at exactly the right time and place. I’ve spent the last several months trying to get my best friend to kick his sugar tooth. I had finally had it. I had accepted that I couldn’t help him because he wasn’t ready to help himself. This song came on outlaw country and absolutely floored me. I probably listened to it 20 times that morning between work. That evening a friend of ours called and told me he was checking himself into rehab, to get some real help.
He was a kind and loving person. He'd give you the shirt off his back. He got caught up in the wrong crowd. Drugs and booze took over. Then one day it all became too much, took his life. I miss him every day. I never said goodbye. In this song, I get to say goodbye. Gracias,
Thank you Brand for such an eloquent song about one of life’s toughest struggles. I’m at an age where I wonder about the meaning of life and all that stuff which leads me to wonder why more and more people either love this song because of how it pertains to their own life or they love it because this song is about someone they love…. I worry for the human race :(
A few days ago a young boy of 17 years took his life. As nobody had any idea of the of the pain he was in . I just hope he has found peace at last. may you rest in peace. Thank you Brandi & the band for searching for the words to bring home the reality of what is happening all around us X
53 year old guy here. Came across her Story album years ago and to this day still one of my favs! Brandi is such a talented singer and songwriter. Love your music!
I’ve cried to this song so many times. Relating way too much to the lyrics. But also taking notice that someone finally understands, instead of just the usual judgement. Thanks Brandi
The song gutted me the first time I heard it, and on the anniversary of his death I always come back to Brandi and this. It summed him up perfectly. So beautiful, so effing flawed, always looking for more, and bigger, and better. These days I prefer “Right on Time”, because I deserved a tomorrow even if he didn’t want one.
Only to die alone. This had me in tears, Why can't people just be who they are and that's O.K. and enough. But no, there's a black GOP Florida lawmaker calling trans people demons and imps, and Ronald Reagan called African diplomats monkeys. America wasn't great then and it isn't great now - not for everybody! I love Brandi Carlile!!
Love this song. It comes to me tonight on the 1yr. anniversary of my brothers death. Thank you for sharing your gift and helping me through some of the hardest times in my life with your music. Peace and love to you and yours.~Cassey
When a song hits you, it just hits you. There are moments in this song where I am truly moved. one of the most talented singer/songwriters of her generation. “Between the lies and the Bible and living proof” WOW!
I only recently heard this song and found out about Brandi Carlile. It was just music playing in the background while I was doing something. But it slowly became clear what this song was about. And I stopped what I was doing. By the end of the song, I was floored by it's beauty and its sadness. I'm sure so many people either know someone that was like this, or have felt like this at one time or another, or are feeling like this right now. My thoughts are with all of you. Always remember, everyone out there has battles going on.

He wasn't really known for breaking the rules
When he arrived in the second year of my high school
He wasn't so much of a twist of fate
As a short turn up from a Southern state
He was born with a sweet tooth he couldn't beat
Always trying to find himself something sweet
All that he found was a trouble and me
Or maybe trouble just found him
It was hard to hide that his heart had scars
He would stay up late talking to the stars
People tried to blame him for making bad choices
When he was only listening to the voices
And searching for some kind of deeper truth
Between the lines and the Bible and living proof
There's no point now to judge him in vain
If you haven't been there, you don't know the pain
He was a liar, but not a fraud
Living proof that there was no God
Just the Devil, stiff as a rod
A slave to a sugartooth
His life became more than he could take
He found a bad habit he couldn't break
Nothing could tame him and nothing could hold him
He only took the pills when the doctor told him
Looking to help for the something sweet
To make his life feel less incomplete
What in the hell are you gonna do
When the world has made its mind up about you?
He was a liar, but not a fraud
Living proof that there was no God
Just the Devil, stiff as a rod
A slave to a sugartooth
He wanted to be a better man
Then life kicked him down like an old tin can
He would give you the shirt on his back
If not for a sugartooth
They found him lying on his bed
With a gun in his hand and a quiet head
His broken heart, now, is finally gone
But I know that he had to hurt for too long
To think he had fought it all on his own
Just to lose the battle and die alone
After so many years of feeling the loss
He finally made his way back home
And I heard they put what was left in a box
And took it to a place called Jesus Rock
And scattered him all over jagged mound
As a symbol to all that the peace had been found
But not for a sign is left behind
With a hand stuck reaching back in time
To a place in which you can never unwind
I hope he found something so sweet
He was a liar, but not a fraud
Living proof that there was no God
Just the Devil, stiff as a rod
A slave to a sugartooth
He wanted to be a better man
But life kicked him down like an old tin can
He would give you the shirt on his back
If not for a sugartooth
Ooh, ooh, ooh, a slave to a sugartooth
Ooh, ooh, ooh, a slave to a sugartooth
Ooh, ooh, ooh, a slave to a sugartooth
Ooh, ooh, ooh, a slave to a sugartooth
Gracias por escribir la letra de la canción!!!
