- In this leather craft video, watch me make a belt sheath for a Puma Emperor folding pocket knife. I decided to line it with veg-tan pigskin. This added some complexity for a type of sheath that normally fairly simple.
Tooling stamps I used in this video (purchased fromTandy Leather):
Craftool Pro B2045
Craftool X5025
Craftool M882
Craftool M881

My laser for cutting the acrylic templates is an xTool P2. Some links from xTool to save a few bucks when purchasing:

That's a Puma Emperor folder, it deserves every bit of complex. Excellent work. 👍
Many thanks!
Outstanding work..... And that Puma 915 is beyond words!
Thanks for watching!
Here are a few Words from the Knife collecting World...Pocket clip,Emerson wave pocket deployment and my personal favourite "ghetto wave".
lol. New to me. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful work. I especially like how you lined the inside, gives the sheath a very professional, high quality touch. I really enjoyed your video, thank you.
Thank you very much!
Awesome. Always a pleasure to watch your work. And I always learn something.
Awesome, thank you!
Excellent craftsmanship. I always enjoy and gain knowledge from watching your videos. Thanks!

You never cease to amaze me. Always appreciate your videos. Close up details are a great feature.
Thank you very much!
Excellent cratfmanship. Ill be doing a similar project soon. This helped set it straight in my head. After a many decade break from leather work, this is inspiring and lit that fire to get going again.

Making acrylic templates. How cool. Real nice work on your leather stamping. 👌
Thanks so much 😊
Absolutely stunning
Thank you!
Beautiful work!
Thank you very much! And thanks for watching!
Fantastic stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can you say, “Custom Made.” Beautiful work, as usual. I always enjoy your wok. Always trying to pick up some technique, practice or even a product to use or try out. I like the use of the pre-dyed pig skin as a liner, as well as the way in which you covered the opening. Excellent process. I agree using a water based adhesive is a much better product to glue leather. For me the extra time to position my peace’s and the bonding is as strong as, if not stronger, construction contact cement. In reading other comments , one questioned the Wuta punches. I have just completed a four sized set of the pricking /punches. I like them very much. I have learned that the Wuta 4mm is the equivalent to the 2mm diamond chisel and the Wuta 5mm is the equivalent to 3mm diamond chisel. This helps me in using the Wuta with my patterns. I joke how you incorporated the laser cut pattern on acrylic. But most of all how you used the cut out to hold your leather as you stamped it. Excellent Work! Please keep the projects coming.
Thanks for watching my video and taking the time to leave a comment!

I really appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into your projects, and I would like your expertise on the best single/double-capped rivets to use for heavy-duty leather applications, like for tool belts and heavy duty dog collars. I have some lighter-duty double-cap rivets that come in handy for small knife sheaths and not-so-heavy-duty pieces of equipment, as well as some copper rivets and burs which hold very well, but just aren't as stylish in certain applications. I just don't want to waste my money on rivets that wouldn't suit my needs, and I know you would have some good recommendations. Thank you
Have you looked at tubular rivets? Or Chicago screws? There's also open back screws.
@@RoadAgentLeather Thank you for the considerations. I think I'm going to go with the tubular rivets. 👍
@@broadhead4311 You'll need a setter for the tubular rivets. There's a hand-held version that only works with the shortest rivets. Any longer and you'll need a press with the proper dies. Otherwise they're fold over while trying to set them.

Love your work. Does it make a big difference using neetsfoot oil before or after you apply dye? I see you oiled after....thank you
I usually oil afterwards because the dye can have a drying effect on the leather. Thanks for watching!
Excellent as always! What an ingenious way to sew in a liner. How did you come up with that??
Thanks! Not really my idea; just inspired by other sheaths I've seen. I constructed my Puma White Hunter sheath in an identical fashion.
Sick project, really like the folding over of the liner.
I've got a few questions- some are related to this, some are just general for your channel
- In some of your other projects, you use an aussie conditioner, some you use resolene, while here you use aussie and then resolene. What determines when you seal it and when you only condition it?
- How is your experience with the wuta tools? they are pretty cheap on the website, but I'm a little skeptical about the quality
- what are the pads you use for dying in some of your videos? they look like wool or fleece pads, where do you get them?
Thanks
In this instance, I used Aussie as a 'resist' for the antiquing cream simply because I'm out Pro-Resist at the moment (I had to heat it because it's freezing in my shop and needed it to penetrate the leather.) The antique will darken the leather to a degree no matter how much resist you put on it. I didn't want the overall color to darken much more than it already was so I was trying to prevent it from getting much darker. The Resolene is the sealer. Sometimes I skip sealing just because I'm not fond of the glossy finish it leaves on everything. In this case, I was fine with it.
I've had very good luck with the Wuta stuff. Most of it I purchased from Amazon. They've even sponsored my channel before (at my request!)
The pads are the "Synthetic Wool Buffing Pads" sold by Tandy Leather. Make sure to pull the excess fibers out of new pads before using!
Love your channel and excellent work! Just curious what type of thread do you use? Thank you!
For hand sewing I typically use Tiger Ritza (purchased from Tandy Leather). However, in this instance I just pulled the #277 bonded nylon off my sewing machine and stitched with that.
looks awesome! is that rubbing alcohol you use to dilute the dye?
Thanks for watching! Yes, just plain isopropyl alcohol.
When you use the Aussie how long do you keep it in the oven and what temperature?
Im new to leather working and dont actually know much and an wondering what the soap does
As a new owner of a P2, I’m grateful for your videos featuring the tool usage. I’m struggling with the Creative Space software. It seams very limited. I’m competent with acad, but don’t have it on the home computer. What software do you use for design?
I use Adobe Illustrator for my actual design work. It's a paid subscription that's kinda pricey. However, Inkscape is a good (and free) vector app I've played a little with. I see Creative Space as just the software that runs the machine. I don't design in it.
Is there a reason you always used round holes for stitching instead of angled? Not judging, just curious. Outstanding craftsmanship as usual. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
I've used both. I find the round holes a little easier to stitch and neater looking
Great as always; i would be very interested in your acrylic template for this sheath. So you ever rinse the saddle soap out or wipe it off before casing the leather?
No need to rinse the soap off. It doesn't effect the dye. Keep an eye out on my Etsy page.
Thank you I will!
Is the clear bar you use at 3:00 minutes saddle soap
OH MY GOD! YOU'RE USING THE STAR WARS LASER CUTTER THINGY! THAT'S NOT REAL CRAFTSMANSHIP! - some "purist" luddite commenter. Amazing work as usual.
Thanks for watching!
I'm curious about your casing method wtih the saddle soap. Do you leave the soap on? Or do you rinse it before staring your tooling?
I leave it in. I want the soap to penetrate the leather fibers.
Slick sheath. What do you use to clean your airbrush ?
Thanks! I this case just water.
At 2:55 what was it you were brushing on and what was sprayed afterward? Great video! Thanks!
It's glycerin saddle soap and water.
@@RoadAgentLeather thank you!
If I had a laser, I would have cut the leather pieces using it
Yep, you can do that too. I was just showing off the template. Was considering selling them on my Etsy page.
Is it possible for me to buy an acrylic template for this from you? This is the only one I've liked so far.
Shoot me an email.
@@RoadAgentLeather what is your email?
Yoh my man..question for you if you wouldn’t mind entertaining me: using Fiebing’s maccasin brown, 91% isopropyl alcohol as a thinner (I can’t find denatured), wool pad applicator, and finishing the color scheme with black antique I get an often blotchy result. All that work and I’m not getting a smooth look!! Leather is 10oz veg tan but my results are always blotchy no matter the weight of leather. Any thoughts on that?
Hmm. Are you using circular motions to apply? Are you on Leatherworker.net? I would post some pictures to see if the very knowledgeable crowd there can diagnose the issue.
@@RoadAgentLeatheryes, circular motion with plenty of liquid applied. I’ll check the resource you mentioned. Thx…
How much would you charge to make a sheath like that one you are making. For a pocket knife about 6 inches long in length
shoot me an email. It's in the "about" tab on my channel's main page.
What are the tools/dies used to cut the belt loops @ 1:30? Outstanding work. TIA
It's an inexpensive set I purchased from Amazon. Just search "leather cutting dies". There's lots of sets to choose from.
I am just curious, why don't you cut the leather out with the XTool? I just bought a laser engraver and was hoping I could you it to make the cuts instead of the acrylic templates. (Even though I plan on making templates too.)
You certainly can. I've done exactly that in many of my previous videos. I was just showing an alternate method. I was also considering making these templates available on my Etsy store. Thanks for subscribing!
Was going to ask the same...
@@RoadAgentLeatherthanks so much for the video. Normally, I like a little narration as my ADHD kicks in (squirrel!!) but I ALWAYS learn a little something from your videos.
Wow!!! How can I order one?!
Great work . Could you please tell me what was the weight of the leather. Thank you in advance
Thanks for subscribing! I used 8 oz veg-tan for the shell. The lining is 2 oz veg-tan pigskin.
Thank you for the clarification of the liner leather. Incredible work.
Great video. I don’t line my sheaths.
Thanks for watching!
Do you have the acrylic template for sale
Keep an eye on my Etsy page.
What kind of glue do you use?
Ecoweld water based contact adhesive (from Tandy). Renia Aquilim 315 is a good one too. No solvent-based or high-voc glues for me!
I dont think the average leather worker has that machine so why show it...
