But when you said “waking up to violence acknowledges what is going on right NOW,” and “seeing suffering as violence toward ourselves when we are NOT waking up,” it helps to see how liberation from suffering is not only possible, but essential, if we are to serve others in this charnel ground. 🙏

I can remember sharing your birthday many years ago at Upaya at it’s beginning (those are some of my most cherished memories, being in service to you and your vision of what has become such a refuge in these most trying of times) and now reflecting back at how much we have changed, both as individuals (you and I) and also collectively...WOW! aint life strange? Now on your 78th, I see the grace, the wisdom, the compassion that envelops you, and my heart is filled with love and gratitude for the time we shared and wish for many more years of the gift of what you bring to all who you touch. I wish you well. However I am surprised at the suffering you are pushing on yourself. I would think after much reflection and meditation you would see through the imposition of the ""social justice warrior" dogma into your conscious mind. For example, one could just as easily observe the Portland antifa folks as behaving in a radically fascist manner. BLM as well. Of course nuance gives us a somewhat "middle" position. I am approaching 70. Been there done that. For your birthday I might suggest a more "middle view" might bring you a bit more peace.
Dear Jack, Thanks for your concern. I think my concern regarding the "been there, done that" attitude is how it might easily reflect moral apathy and privilege. not comparing myself, but Representative John Lewis, Nelson Mandela, former Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Jane Goodall avoided that unfortunate trap in their later years. Please do not be concerned about me. I am healthy and fine. But many are not. Approaching eighty, I choose to continue to serve social and environmental justice to the extent that I can.
