  • In this video I go over how and when to use 4 Wheel Drive in your Jeep Gladiator or Wrangler (Or really any vehicle that has a manual transfer case). Hope this is helpful, if you have any questions let me know will happily give you my input!

Worst explanation of the Jeep 4wd I’ve seen. Bravo!

Best video about this. So, you can go back and forth between 2 high and 4 high while in drive or park. But, going to and from 4 low, it has to be in neutral and then place it back into drive at a crawling pace.

Good explanation of how to engage a mechanically actuated 4wd system. I've seen/read many reviewers and owners complain about difficulty getting their Wrangler or Gladiator into or out of 4wd while they are at a dead stop. You need movement as you said to mesh gears.
The only thing I'd add is the 4wd auto position has a clutch in the transfer case that locks up under certain conditions. These are common in GM, Ford and some Ram/Jeep 4wd systems that are electronically (switch) actuated. Clutches wear and the system is more complicated with more things to fail because of solenoid switches.

Well Ross, Kudos to you for doing this vid you did a hell of a lot better than I would have . I actually learnt something from your demo and I have bee wheeling for 20 years. But you stated that you shift into neutral when you go to 4low,I haven't tried that way before as I have always gone in 4low from a stop but still in drive. This is my first go around with an automatic as my previous Jeeps have been stick so maybe this is something I should try. As for rolling forward to mesh gears makes total sense.

You are correct about not using 4-high/4-low on pavement. You are incorrect about not using 4-high on hard packed gravel. It is common practice on the west coast, where there are a lot of hard-packed gravel fire service roads, to travel them in 4-high (having the front wheels powered even saved me from going into a deep ditch once). There is not enough traction on these surfaces to prevent the slippage needed to not bind the transfer case. 4-high on these roads benefits the driver by providing all around better traction, and better overall control of the vehicle. 4-high also benefits the road by reducing wear and tear of the road surface (such as washboards), especially on hills and turns. You could technically even use 4-low on hard-packed gravel roads, but it's not practical to do so because of speed limitations due to low gearing. You'll know if there is too much traction on the surface you're travelling in 4-high or low, because you'll get wheel hop when you turn the wheels. So go ahead and stop limiting your use of your 4 wheel drive system. 4-high is for more than just snow. In your case, snow is what 4 auto is for. Happy wheeling
