    Regardless of what music genre phase I've gone through, I've always had a core group of bands that kept me anchored; The Carpenters has been one. When I was in a heavy metal band, I'd drive home from practice or a show and be listening to The Carpenters. Karen's voice was majestic! Such a tragic story. May she be at peace in the spirit world.

      Now that you mention it, I would do the same thing. I was an 80s New Wave kid and heard The Carpenters when I was little kid. My Mom would have the radio on I would hear them. So, whenever I would hear them on the radio as I was older, I would leave it and let them play out. I think it was the happy innocent feelings from childhood that would calm me down. It would remind me of playing with my dog in the backyard, riding my bike, stuff like that.

So, if love that beautiful voice like most people do, you might want to check out these other great songs by the Carpenters, " Ordinary fool " " Bless the beast and the children " " Hurting each other "

    Another great composition by Bacharach and David. They collaborated in composing many of the greatest hits of the 60s and 70s. In addition to Close to You, they wrote many of Dionne Warwick's hits (like Alfie, Walk on By, and Don't Make Me Over), as well as Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head, sung by B.J. Thomas.
    Bacharach is pronounced BACK-a- rack. Dionne Warwick's first name is pronounced DEE-onn.

    This is one of those songs where it's just hard to believe everyone hasn't heard it. If not this Carpenter's version,
    the music itself that's been played as easy listening music in public places seems like everywhere ever since it's release. Beautiful tune that definitely put Carpenters on the map.
    On the subject of Dionne Warwick... She is a living legend. Just inducted into the Kennedy Center Honors that was televised nationally last week. Check out "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" by Ms Warwick, also a Burt Bacharāch composition. They were quite the musical partnership through the 60s and 70s. Many many hits throughout the era.

    Summer 1970 going on vacation in the car a long 16 hour drive. We had the AM radio on the whole way listening to top 40 stations fading in and out along the way. This song being at or near the top of the charts at that time was of course played a lot. Probably heard it half a dozen times on that drive. And each time it came on it grabbed my attention and I would listen closely it just so captivated my 12 year old mind. This song always reminds me of that trip. Sadly just several weeks after that trip my parents split.

    Such an incredible voice, gone too soon. Karen made it sound so effortless. And her brother's arrangements perfectly suited it. Bacharach and David were one of the greatest songwriting duos of the 20th century, with many of their songs recorded by Dionne (DEE-on) Warwick. I call this "warm bath music". Just lie back, relax, and let the warm music wash over you.

    The "entire entourage" was Karen and Richard. Back in the 70s there was an organized group in L.A. called The Wrecking Crew. They were a bunch of session players, available "for rent" when needed. The Carpenters took advantage of their services, a lot. Many times they would even dub themselves in as the background singers.

  • @way2deep100
    @way2deep100 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Carpenters' harmonies were most often just Karen and Richard. Richard was enamoured with the multi-part harmonies Les Paul and Mary Ford were able to create on their own by adding new two-part harmonies across several tracks.

  • @andrewclayton4181
    @andrewclayton4181 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This was the first Carpenters song I heard, and it impressed me. I bought the single, at a time when albums were de rigeur. This sounded pretty much like the studio track. The harmonies and instrumentation are amazing, and of course Bacharac 's writing. I suspect the trumpet might be an influence from Herb Alpert, they were recording on his A+ M label.
    You can't give up on the Carpenters without listening to their 1972 hit Goodbye to love, with its fabulous guitar solo by Tony Peluso. It's one of the best.

  • @lauraallen55

    I believe the harmonies in their songs were their two voices recorded separately from the main vocals. Richard arranged songs to suit her voice. Karen could sing in a higher register than what you hear her sing in (contralto) but she herself said that 'the money's in the basement'.
    Early on in their career, someone in the recording studio (I believe it was, either that or the press) made a comment about 'chubby' Karen. She wasn't even overweight but she took it hard, and that's what got her anorexia started. She battled it for years, and had actually finally gotten much better, but the damage to her heart during those years was just too much.
    Additional to these sad facts it the fact that her parents, particularly her mother, absolutely doted on Richard and she was ignored (at best, and I'm being kind), so she probably already had a lot of insecurities to start with.
    There are some near a capella versions of her singing their songs here on youtube and they are well worth checking out in your free time. It's like she is right there in the room with you whispering songs in your ear. Amazing voice. She never hit a bad note, and did most songs in one take. I would listen enraptured to her sing the phone book. What a tragic loss. RIP Karen.
    Karen is it for me for female singers. However, another female singer from back in those days worth checking out is Dusty Springfield. Her voice was smoky, rich and smooth. The Look of Love is the one to start with for her!

    This was their break through #1 hit in summer 1970. Karen was only 20. It's the record dubbed over the film, or they lipped synced to it. You're hearing Richard and Karen singing the backup vocals overlayered, [or the guys in the band wore real tight underwear to sound female...lol] and other instruments not there...Vibraphone, flute [probably alto flute] , other woodwinds, a harp, doubled trumpet, orchestra strings, both electric and acoustic pianos. ...also it's a very bad recording here, sounds "fuzzy"...Hal Blaine of the "Wrecking Crew" played drums on almost ALL of their recordings, Karen was not allowed to, she was not a studio drummer but a good live one, and had no time anyway as they were so busy touring, writing recording...Bacharach and David wrote it around 1963, had completely the wrong style until the Carpenters. Bacharach admitted that. Richard did all of the arranging and picking of hit songs, did some co-writing of some of their hits. Really it was the studio bass player Joe Osborne, who discovered them and moved them onto Herb Alpert of A and M Record label. Their first album bombed, the others at A and M wanted to dismiss the Carpenters, but Alpert saw the talent there and absolutely NO. And he was absolutely right.
