This song was so huge when it came out. This was the first k-pop song I ever heard! And iirc it was around this time that shinee was making the dance practice popular too

It’s so true that each of them have great vocals, especially Jonghyun and Onew. Their harmonies are always amazing and I think we’re so used to hearing them we take their harmonies for granted. Each member is different in many ways but when they’re together they just meld perfectly in every way.
    Onew-Blue, Jonghyun-End of the Day
    Thanks for reacting to SHINee!

Jonghyun was an outstanding artist and soloist, he's also behind some of the best works of other idols and artists. I hope you can celebrate his life and body of work by reacting to his music as well 😊

What I love about SHINee is that they're ALL amazing performers, yet they blend in so seamlessly with each other. When they're all together, they're a beautiful team working together. Then you see them performing on their own and you see them being freaking amazing stars on their own right. It is never "Taemin and friends" when they're together, it's always SHINee, who just happens to have Taemin in it.

Love this song. SM dominated Kpop at this time. They are still famous for the quality of their vocals, but at this time the quality of their performances was also a tier above the rest. Can definitely recommend Jong Hyun - one of the most talented Kpop stars ever, still sadly missed.
Also, if you want a vocal shock, check Onew's cover of Nessun Dorma. Yes, the Opera song.

SM Entertainment had singer and producer Yoo Young-jin from the 90s to this year. When I listen to songs by singers from SM, I can feel Yoo Young-jin's unique style

In SHINee's "Lucifer" MV the "smoke" or "light trail" you see is supposed to represent the aura of a girl who has devilish powers like Lucifer, who is trying to possess them and take over their lives. As the English lines in the song say, "Loveaholic, robotronic ... her whisper is the Lucifer." (They are using auto tune because they are supposed to be "robotronic"-ly controlled by the girl who is "The Lucifer." So, the auto tune is meant to make them sound robotic.) In other words, the woman or girl they are talking about is so desirable that she is like Lucifer and you have to use all your willpower just to resist her wiles.
In the MV you see them trying to fight against Lucifer's powers and resist her attempts to try to make them bend to her will, etc. That's why in the choreography you see all the robotic moves because they are showing how "Lucifer" is trying to control them like a robot. For example, they put their wrists together like they are being handcuffed to show how she is trapping them, and they vibrate to show how they are being manipulated by "Lucifer" and they are trying to resist her powers, etc.
FYI: That vibration you saw them make is 100% them actually shaking like that, there aren't any camera tricks. If you pay attention when they perform "Lucifer" live, you will see them do that exact same thing. :D When they explain to people how to do that move, they say you have to "tense all your muscles and then pretend like you are being startled." Just wait until you see some of Taemin's solo performances and discover how much of an expert he is at popping and ticking. He is considered one of the best poppers in the industry, and he can literally isolate every joint and muscle individually and make any part of his body vibrate at warp speed.
LOL we have no idea why they had to be dancing in front of a sports car, but that was kind of an iconic thing that Kpop companies did back then in a lot of their MVs. The group would dance around a fancy car to show off their coolness and to give the video a more futuristic, expensive looking aesthetic.
"Lucifer" was released in 2010, so this was just the look that a lot of MVs had back then, in part because everyone was following SHINee's lead. Just take a look at TVXQ's, Super Junior's, Infinite's or 2PM's MVs, etc. from around that time and you will see and hear a similar look, style and sound. SHINee was setting trends in the industry with 'Lucifer."
I'm not sure why people are often so shocked by their hairstyles and outfits in this MV. :D I think they are actually all pretty cool for doing something different that sets them apart from everyone else in the industry. That is what makes SHINee legends and why "Lucifer" is such an iconic song and dance. You're not going to remember a group or a song if they look and sound the same as everyone else, you remember them for standing out and not being afraid to be unique.
SHINee are also known for never being afraid to experiment with everything they do, including their style, and as the fashionista and stylist of the group, Key is always looking for ways to be unique, so his head was really shaved on the one side. What you see is his hair was bleached blond on the side and then shaved down to his scalp. He is known for always being unique and wanting to stand out. That's why Key's style is often just straddling the edge of outrageous, but somehow always manages to look cool.
Fun fact: I think one reason why Minho's hair is so short at this time is because their previous comeback was with their song "Ring Ding Dong," and all the members had pretty long, shaggy hairstyles. However, Minho has never liked having long hair. So, I think for "Lucifer" Minho decided to rebel and go really short.
This was also the era where Taemin had long hair and it made him one of the most popular of the members at the time, especially with their Japanese fans. The Japanese culture really embraces men with long hair and the members said that he was one of the most popular at the time because of his style. Taemin with long hair is so iconic and many in the fandom were really sad when he eventually cut his hair.
So, in this MV, Taemin had just turned 17. Onew and Jonghyun are 20 and Key and Minho are 18.
To see where SHINee truly shines, if you haven't yet, you have to check out a performance of "Lucifer" live in concert at their SHINee World Concert III (SWC3) in Seoul from 2014, th-cam.com/video/Fm5n8Q2XO34/w-d-xo.html, and/or their "Ring Ding Dong" and "Lucifer" set at their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) in Seoul in 2016, th-cam.com/video/mtFK7FxKdLs/w-d-xo.html. This is a perfect example of how you can tell they are singing live and killing it every time. If you're impressed by Jonghyun's long high note in the MV, just wait until you hear what he can do live. Plus, SHINee doesn't need auto tune, and if you hear them perform the song live, they often don't use it.
"Lucifer" is actually known as one of the most difficult songs and dances to cover because of its tutting and popping and for the fact that it has a very fast paced beat with dance moves that are very sharp and precise, which are designed to hit every beat of the song. (They actually refer to that tutting formation as a bug or worm. Their arms are supposed to look like the legs of a creature.) And the song itself is very complicated with the song's wide range of notes and flow.
Many amateurs have thought "Lucifer" looks like one of SHINee's more simple songs and dances. But the minute they try to sing the song and/or dance the choreography, they soon discover that it is way more complicated than they thought. It only looks and sounds simple, because SHINee makes it look that way. Check out this clip of SHINee teaching a group of actors and comedians "Lucifer" as part of a challenge on the variety show "Invincible Baseball Team," th-cam.com/video/-TLCK7KbLus/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/0V02cQwYLMQ/w-d-xo.html. It's funny because when they came to meet SHINee to start the practice, Jonghyun asked them why they chose this song of all songs, and they said because it looks manly and they thought it was fairly easy to cover. But the first thing Jonghyun said to them, while laughing, was "oh no, actually it's one of our most difficult and it took us extra time to really perfect it." :D

You definitely should check out the dance practice. SHINee's "Lucifer" dance practice was the very first dance practice video ever in the Kpop industry, released specifically for fans. SHINee is the group that started the trend and their "Lucifer" dance practice video is why dance practice videos are even a thing today. :D It was the very first dance practice video to go viral. Back then, dance practice videos were filmed for the group and artists to watch to help them remember the moves and to fix mistakes, etc. They weren't intended for a mass audience. But SM realized that fans were starting to try and copy SHINee's choreography, so they decided to film a dance practice and release it to the public. SHINee's dance practice videos became so popular that other companies and groups started to do the same and show off their choreography by releasing dance practices too. But like everything SHINee does, they were the first.

I was around when this song came out. Unbelievably popular song, I can't overstate how much this song dominated when it came out. It's an absolute icon of kpop and a lot of people's first kpop song and first SHINee song. The dance practice video was actually the first/most popular dance practice video and popularized the trend from there after.
Regarding Jonghyun, just also know that SHINee is five members, period. His passing had, obviously, a profound impact on the members and fandom. But SHINee never hid it. They openly talk about Jonghyun to this day. They wrote songs about their grief and trying to move forward with hope. Last month when SHINee won music show awards for HARD, Minho lifted the trophy to the sky and looked up to show it to Jonghyun. They often leave a space for him in choreography even if was created after his pass. He also depicted as a Moon so if you watch SHINee content you will see things like a 5th chair, a 5th mic stand, a Moon.. all for Jonghyun to still be part of them on stage. When talking about SHINee and Jonghyun, I recommend to try to keep it light and celebrate his life and work, because unfortunately a lot of people can only seem to talk about his passing than his epic contributions to music. It's okay to acknowledge it happened, the members do, they don't hide anything. But they also continue to be happy and follow their dreams. By the way, Jonghyun wrote a lot of songs for SHINee and other artists, and wrote a book too! :) One of my "I wish I could go back in time to this moment in live music history" is Jonghyun's "Crazy" performance at the Tokyo Dome is #2 of all time. His charisma is off the charts, his voice echoing through the stadium with the fan chants in harmony is breath-taking.
Lay is in EXO :P yes check him out! haha
Onew is an opera-trained singer, check out his Nessun Dorma performance. He mostly does ballads, OSTs, and light songs. Dice is a really nice song. Blue is very hard to watch emotionally, it's incredibly moving and his voice always brings me to tears. Onew is the leader and eldest but also a bit of a "fake maknae" and that will make sense to you as you watch other content if you haven't already.
Minho has a sultry voice that I perfect for rap and the smooth songs he sings! I could listen to him for days! To me, his voice is like nearly perfect in the way that a great radio announcer has a golden voice, know what I mean? Minho doesn't have a lot of solo music but he has is phenomenal! He's an exceptional actor too! He's in numerous dramas throughout the years. He's also an incredible athlete, one of the best amongst kpop idols. Every year there's a competition called ISAC (Idols Stars Athletic Competition) where they do track and field type things like sprints/races, archery, etc. Minho has consistently dominated whenever they had participated in the past haha
And you know Key and Taemin :D
Happy to see your SHINee journey!

Im surprised you liked Lucifer. I expect most people today wouldn't like Lucifer. Thank you for reacting!
For Jonghyun I recommend End of a day live
For Onew - Nessum Dorma, or Blue are actually okay if youre looking for vocals too.
Or Please Don't Go. A duet by Jonghyun and Onew.
Hope to see more SHINee soon. ❤

Lucifer is still my favorite SHINee song along with View (which I highly recommend a reaction to - the lyrics were written by Jonghyun)!!
Regarding live performances, I recommend Ring Ding Dong + Lucifer remix (if you prefer to react to RDD's MV first, that might be a good idea too!).
All SHINee members are extremely talented and are great soloists. Jonghyun was the second member to debut with a solo album, however, since the group's first album he already has a solo song and he has composed many songs for the group and for other artists (both from SM, EXO, and outside of SM)!
Thank you very much for the reaction, I will leave my recommendations for solo songs from the other members: Onew - DICE, Jonghyun - Shinin’, Minho - Heartbreak
