Oh KSO, definitely you got that one correct…couple of little things on the video to check out… the countdown on the traffic signal timing, the school bus 🚌 going by… the actual randomness of it all as well as one take video in the street… the sick guitar under the beat… it was released 3.14 which was Pi Day and he raps about Pie… Ren is really stepping up more than anyone could have asked for… thanks for the great react…🫶🏻
Wow, I hadn't clocked the Pi Day release date ! Very clever - altho he has obviously been in Canada too long and forgotten that the correct (UK) date format is 14.3 !

I saw your reaction to Penitence (just love Molly's vocals on that) - you said that you had changed your mind on Ren, that he is not the person/artist that you thought he was. I know you had a problem with him singing about sad stuff and you thought he was wallowing in it/glorifying it. Now that you have listened to more of his music, and understand his journey better, it allows you to understand him better. It opens you up to enjoy his music more. Knew you'd get here in the end !

I never heard of Nas until I heard Harry Mack say Illmatic was his favorite album. I never heard Halftime until Ren did this retake. Now because of that introduction and reactors like you and Scru and so many others, I'm discovering art that's been around for 50 years, yet somehow passed me by entirely. Thank you.
hip hop does need in my opinion to go back to its roots with clean nasty beats and well spoken lyrics that carry a message that isnt a negative story

Great commentary at 03:30 . I love this by Ren and that whole mid section was the same multipart flow pattern with complex rhymes and multi-meaning wordplay. It was truly masterful. Talking about pimping his pain....I hope you reacted to Ren's 'Seven Sins' rap. That is one of the most amazing pieces of art focused on actual Pain. Ren suffered with sever pain for many years due to his illness. He expresses this in many works of his.

KSO, Ren is bringing a boatload of people slowly into rap. These are mainly folks who would never had considred rap as a medium for musicality or performance. But by listening to Ren and his many rap songs, they branch out into much more. That is the joy we find in this guy.

kso nice reaction. i didn't f with nas much as he made so many drug references. as a recovered addict, i tried to avoid stuff that took me back to the glamorous aspects of drug culture. he was a nd remains one of the greatest rappers of all time it was just the content for me.
Being an old rock head, I'm understanding rap a little more from channels like yours.

I like that Ren doesn't make excuses about "pimping his pain" or talking his way around it. He's just speaking facts about his career rising on his Sick Boi image. He might lose some fans because of it, but at least no one can accuse him of being a hypocrite. He did the same thing with his Money Game series, saying, "I'm as much a part of the Money Game as you."

Your example about the tree/branches was a great way to illustrate how one series of bars can give birth to the next:
Ie:
Global warming making it “rain” gives birth to pimpin’ his pain making sales rise….sails rising gives birth to pirate motif….which brings up rats…which brings up the plague….etc etc (not to mention all the double/triple layers of meaning that overlap from one line to another, and keeps the evolving message a unified conversation from the artist to the listener.
I’ve tended to think of this as “stream of consciousness” thinking, but it’s so much more than that--and you definitely said it better. I’ll be keeping those “branches” in mind when listening, from now on, because I’ve experienced that when writing my own poetry, but truly I’ve never heard anyone do it quite like Ren.

There were vids where you'd miss the meaning/purpose, and that is very important, because he can now experience how people interpret his lyrics. Maybe he's too vague. Maybe he's too direct. Nice reaction but like all genres of music Rap has to evolve while honouring it’s’ Genesis. I still think it’s a shame you never clicked what Ren was doing with the bars and flows in The Hunger’. Now you get where he’s coming from , maybe worth a retake from you?

I'm not soneone who knows rap so I never wanted to presume to, like, take offense at any of KSO's criticisms (& I fully believe even the most dedicated of fans needs to be able to examine & criticize any art, and since it's all so subjective of COURSE people can have differing opinions about what they like & don't like), but it just felt so weird to watch him make comments about the things he perceived as deficits in the lyrics when it seemed so obvious to me that once he learned more about Ren thru Ren's back catalogue, he was gonna revise those opinions at least a little!!!
The Hu ger may still mot be KSO's top Ren track if he revisits it, but I'm super eager to find out what he might think on a re-listen.
Probably my most anticipated/hoped-for re-listen in all of reactordom (tho in all transparency, I mostly have a very narrow band of interest in reaction videos, Ren/Aurora/Dimash/Angelina Jordan and those are the only real staples for me so take my intense interest with a grain of salt, it might not be representative of the reaction audience at large!)

he rehashes too many lines. everything since Animal Flow has ripped lines from other songs and it's annoying because a lot of them were sick lines the first time out. it's cool when he uses callbacks to his OG work but just reusing lines and concepts ain't the same. mans needs to burn all his rap shit and start fresh. he's like a standup that tells the same jokes all the time.

TBH@@mikep83 , there were lots of call backs to his own songs. He mentioned Sambuca in his Dotta diss track, he used Eeny-Meeny-Miney-Mo in Murderer, he mentioned a 3 point hoop (or thereabouts) in Genesis, he referred to Tyson's ear-biting in Illest of our Time, he has used "death is the cousin of sleep" on another track (I forget which one), he used "supersize me" in Uninvited, he used "tongue in cheek" in Street Life. He does this a lot. It is clearly a deliberate thing and, presumably, intended to tie things together for his fans. I get that it can irritate some people because it might look lazy/unimaginative, but I don't think it is either of those as Ren is incredibly creative. (To be fair I don't need another Toblerone or Muhammad Ali reference for a while ...).
