Jazz fan: “JAZZ is alive in Japan.”
No kidding, just like how Tokyo Jihen is this legendary band reppin’ Japan, you’ll often find jazz vibes mixed into rock and pop tracks that climb to the top of Japan’s music charts

I’ve enjoyed discovering more Sheena Ringo and Tokyo Jihen all thanks to an 810 year old small pigeon. The Japan music scene is vibrant and eclectic

@@spinnymathingy3149 Sure. Band Maid’s founding member, Miku Kobato, has her persona as both a guitarist/vocalist and an 810 year old small pigeon. She always ends each sentence with “po!” Like a pigeon. Quirky, eccentric, fun, charming. Kobato always credits Sheena Ringo as one of her biggest inspirations

That was an incredibly exciting and virtuosic song, and the showmanship from all the band members was off the charts.
I can’t believe you didn’t mention those hats. Damn, they were something else!

Yeah, thanks for introducing me to Sheena “and all the bands she sings in “ her singing and singing style is so different, and there’s not a bad or boring song from her. And as you mentioned the songwriting unfolds in an unexpected way, which is just fantastic.

Loved your analysis about tension building and release, never tought about technical details like that.. So far the most insightful reaction that I've actually learned something from so far, lol.. Also love it, I've known her for over 10 years. Didn't even expect people to listen this amazing "old"pieces of hers

Thank you for picking a Japanese song.
Japan has a wide variety of music, songs, and artists. and Japanese music is very diverse.
Until recently, Japanese artists had a language barrier and the Japanese domestic market was too big (Japan's music industry has long been the second largest market after the United States )so they were not actively selling overseas, that's why most of the artists are not known outside of Japan, so there are still great finds.
Another thing that may be helpful. In Japanese music, lyrics are an integral part of the song. They are quintessential.
You may find it more enjoyable to listen to the song with English subtitles (CC) whenever possible. In Japanese music, lyrics are an integral part of the song. They are quintessential. Recently, Japanese music videos seem to have English subtitles for the lyrics. but Not all Japanese song lyrics are translated but you may them interesting.
Recently, it seems that Japanese female bands are gaining popularity worldwide.
    I recommend ◉ Gacharic Spin「MindSet」
maybe you already know…l recommend men's band ◉“ One OK Rock ” very popular with foreigners. They have a lot of songs, but at first.“W e are” Especially the live version is popular to watch
    Other songs I recommend ◉.“ King Gnu”/白日(HAKUJITU)
                  ◉ 藤井 風 - "死ぬのがいいわ" Live at 日本武道館 (2020)/ ( FUJIIKAZE-SHINU NOGA IIWA)
    l hope you like them!

Lounge music is exactly correct, this is definitely from her lounge singer phase (which is why the vocals are a bit more contained).

I really enjoy your reactions and was pleasantly surprised when I saw the thumbnail for this video. My wife introduced me to Shiina Ringo's music 24 years ago and I've been a huge fan ever since. she is a pure musical genius and the list of her hits goes on and on; she has done the theme song for the Olympics, the World Cup as well as many other major events in Japan, oh and Miku from Band-Maid was inspired by her. I go to Japan every year and I always make sure to buy whatever I don't already have of here's, Band-Maid and Maximum the Hormone, speaking of which, you have not yet reacted to (WARNING: MTH are heavily copyrighted, but boy are you in for a rollercoaster ride). May I suggest you start with this song called "Maximum the hormone II" Here's the link th-cam.com/video/IC-wDpwzEt4/w-d-xo.html hope you give it a shot and that you're fully awake if you do, cheers.

As others have said, this was the relatively short lived Phase 1 lineup of the band that existed from '03-'05. After that they changed the keys player & lead guitarist and became even more stylistically diverse of a group. Initially the band was kinda formed as an offshoot of the backing musicians who'd supported the singer Sheena Ringo for touring in her solo career, but the Phase 2 lineup consists of members who either also lead their own groups as well, established as producers (bassist Seiji Kameda is legendary on that front) and/or having successful session careers.
They definitely have jazz fusion elements to their music (live they rarely perform any song the same way twice), but I'd also frequently describe their output as art rock in the best sense of the term. There was a literal eight year gigging hiatus (Feb 29 2012-Feb 29 2020), but the band is still active today and the song/MV 'The Scarlet Alibi' from their comeback album might be a good place to try next.

Tokyo Jihen (or Incidents in English) is a band set up by Shiina. She writes the material & heads the band. I think she was No. 34 in the list of all greatist artists of Japan last time I looked, a couple of years back. Yes I can see the Lounge band ref. But she is much more than that, her array of styles is ever changing and is influencing much of the young talents of Japan. Indeed, Miku, the founder of Band Maid cites Shiina as the influence that decided Miku to start Band Maid. She also influenced Daoko to become a singer, Ado sings Crime & Punishment a Shiina song as does Utaha of Wednesday Campanella. Rock,Jazz, funk etc are Shiina's bag, with a strong dose of the theatrical. she is also the queen of the megaphone. See the combination of King Gnu & Shiina Ringo on Millenium Parade, Work is the track I recommend. Cheers Spike

It's so interesting that you brought up the lounge band idea. I don't hear it at all in this, but Tokyo Jihen is known for putting out a lot of jazz material (sometimes kind of lounge-y even, in some performances), especially in their Phase II line-up, which features a different keyboardist and lead guitarist than what you hear here. Some of Ringo's solo songs are basically straight show-tunes, although generally her voice has a little too much grit at some point or other to make them entirely conventional. But structurally, yes, they follow show-tune conventions. (I don't necessarily love her show-tune style material, but I am impressed by her ability to write it, and I am starting to warm up more to some of it.)
Hata, the drummer, is also a martial artist, and seems to be a fairly serious body-builder. If you look on the Tokyo Incidents channel, you can see some video focusing on that.
This realization of "Sounan" is probably my favorite rock performance of the last twenty years or so. The sinuous melodic line and the almost constantly building tension is a large part of what I like about it. I think this might be the first English-language reaction to Sounan, so thank you.

I’m probably wrong about the lounge band thing, I tend to just say whatever comes into my head while I’m listening to the song, and I wouldn’t say I’m remotely an expert in anything 😂 but it was a really interesting song and I enjoyed checking it out!

Sheena Ringo, being an extraordinary musician herself, always surrounds herself with the best musicians, in Tokyo Jihen or solo. She's my favorite solo japanese artist, I rank her on the same level than Kate Bush as an exemple.
