      If the chain gets pulled faster does the chain go higher? If so, then does gravity cause the entire chain to accelerate at the same rate or what? For example, of H0 is 100 meters above the ground. And H1 is the ground, how fast is the chain traveling when it hits the ground? If the chain accelerates slower than it should, is the slowing down translated Into the force that raises the height of the chain? Thank you!

    This whole thing has been so much fun! Kind of sad it's over to be honest. I like your description of the chain on a rod experiment (which is a shame otherwise we could have kept the videos going!). Good point about the simulations. I was actually going to add another cautionary point about them: publication bias. Like maybe quite a few people were trying to creat the fountain in simulation but only 2 or 3 were successful and so those are the only ones we heard about. Maybe other sims showed no fountain but they were never shared. And don't send me any money, just add it to #teamseas.

      Now I need to find the time to make a video on why the direct down wind faster than wind explanation made by Derek is completely wrong. I'm just to busy at the moment but I will find the time to explain why energy storage is what allows that vehicle to exceed wind speed so it will be for a limited amount of time and they did not run the experiment long enough to see how vehicle will slow down below wind speed as soon as the stored energy is used up.

    Another good thing about questioning physics like this, is that you end up with a much more in-depth explanation of what's happening, which allows you to apply it to more complex systems as you really understand what's happening.
    And, we've found out it's really two things happening. It's the interaction of the steady state loop acting more rigidly, which allows for the upward force to move the loop upwards as a whole.

    • @MadScientist267
      @MadScientist267 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And I definitely think Medhi's idea to wrap up with a tangent is a good one...
      I believe just by watching the video on the rod that this is the exact same effect, evident by the pulsing in the loop.
      Make it happen I say... We're probing the edges of the universe... Certainly a few beads won't be the undoing 🤣

Getting angry, upset, or bitter about losing anything can only stand to make that loss worse for yourself by everyone seeing how you deal with a blow to the ego. By realizing your own error, acknowledging that and changing the way you see things is such an honorable way to go about it that it dosent even matter that you were wrong in the first place! I hope more people can adopt this mindset when competing with others.

    I have one minor thing to add. It's not mere loops - look carefully at the chain fountain after it has built up some height. In particular, if you watch the staircase from Steve's video ( 2:36 in this video) in slow motion, you can see that with each turn it begins building up an sinusoid. The tension and bend radius have to be sufficient for this to occur. The bends of each turn cannot "collapse" quickly enough, so they begin to form a semi-rigid structure. Each time a bend is pulled up the fountain, the force acts to push the semi-rigid structure high enough into the air that the bottom of the structure is touching the surface. In the case of the rod ( 8:51 in your video), it is clear that this force need not be constant, but instead it can act periodically relative to each bend and maintain the fountain. Indeed, you can watch the end of the rod in slo-mo again and see the impulse each time the chain crosses over the rod.

    • @sacr3
      @sacr3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bobwhite137 there is no "work" since there is no movement. But when you try something, like jumping, you can only gain height if you have a solid body that can absorb your kinetic energy and not move. This allows you to gain a lot of height. Without this surface you gain no movement, you simply swing your legs.
      So the surface "reflects" the energy. The chain pushes against the solid surface, as a result due to the solid surfaces high mass and weight, it reflects that energy back into the chain.
      Walking on soft materials is more difficult, requires us to expend more energy because the soft ground "absorbs" more than reflects.
      So youre completely right there is no work being done by the ground, it's solid, but the energy of the chain isn't lost on a soft ground, it's kept in the chain as its reflected back when the chain rises one end, and drops the other.

    Hey Mehdi! Another factor would be the centrifugal force, because where the chain fountain bends, it will travel on a semi-circular path. You can more or less easily use the a = (v^2)/r equasion, and with the centripetal acc. you can calculate the force. It would be an interesting feature including it in the simulation!

      This is exactly the idea that sprung into my mind last week. If the chain forms a circle, the forces around the rotational axis cancel each other out.
      Is the circle cut in half (the bottom half is removed) then the axis of rotation sees only upwards pulling forces, and the axis shifts upwards until it meets enough force of the weight of the chain, where it then will find an equilibrium.

    0.36N is equivalent to the gravity pulling down just ~36.7 grams of mass.
    Also it sort of doesn't make sense for the length of the chain to influence that lever effect strength.
    It was still supposed to only be the speed of the chain that influences that, not the length of the chain itself, and especially in a test where the acceleration is from an electric motor spooling the chain, not the gravity pulling it down...

      @@EmK02 N is not mass, it's a force. Although, because gravity is a force that can constantly accelerate mass at a specific rate (9,8m/s^2), you can easily calculate how much of this force exactly is pulling on a specific amount of mass on the Earth's surface, and that would be 1N being equal to the force of gravity pulling around 102 grams of mass at Earth's surface.

    One thing I should point out. Most of the garbage in the oceans isn't from people throwing garbage in rivers and waterways. It's garbage thrown in streets and even garbage cans. Garbage in streets is washed into rivers & waterways, and low-density garbage (like plastic bags) in garbage cans can blow away from the can, the truck, the dump, etc. So don't think you're innocent just because you don't throw trash in rivers.

    I think the measured push-back is “leakage” from the energy building up in the wave accumulating in the material stream formed by the chain siphon. As the wave pulls the chain in anew direction, the stiffness of the chain communicates a bit of the growing kinetic energy to the surface, proportional to the stiffness of the chain, but this isn’t what causes the fountain, but actually the other way round. It’s clear there are waves traveling in the chain, the largest at the top and a smaller wave train in the drop; your simple loop on the drill is the simplest case and shows the “stiffening” effect of the kinetic energy in the chain.
    If you examine a stream of water streaming in an arc, you might be surprised to see the upstream section change when you interfere with the downstream part. Here, In similar fashion, energy is accumulating in the fountain, provided by the potential energy of the chain as it accelerates by gravity and the siphon. The integrity and stiffness of the chain provides enough structure to create the siphon, and also contain the standing wave, any less and it would simply break and dribble to the floor. There is eventually equilibrium between the energy loss due to friction and the siphons acceleration, so the wave does not grow forever.
    It might be valuable to test ball chains with different ball-to-ball angular flexibility to see how this constraint effects the wave propagation, but i suspect almost all variations of chain (ball weight, distance, etc) will behave similarly but w different resonance. I guess a longer falling distance and a lighter chain, but heavy enough to flow well, will reveal these wave mechanics more easily, maybe even see wave packets flowing upstream. (Edit: pls make and launch some bigger loop of chain! That’s was cool!)

    • @stefanl5183
      @stefanl5183 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're right! It's clearly a wave. I think the wave is being reflected where the chain touches the bottom of the container or the loop it's over. Most of it's energy is being reflected back down the chain but some of it creates the force being measured. Anyway, the reflected energy builds the amplitude of the wave because the medium the wave is traversing, the chain, is moving as fast as the wave. So, it's not really a standing wave, but actually a traveling wave. However, since the medium the wave is traveling through is moving the same speed as the wave it appears stationary to us and more importantly it's stationary relative to the reflection point (bottom of container or rod it's looped over) this results in the reflected energy causing the amplitude to build. The wave is reflected due to impedance mismatch where the chain touches something.

    • @randommm-light
      @randommm-light 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stefanl5183 glad you agree! it’s a cool thing that waves like this propagate upstream. You can see it in traffic.
      More so, a wave train actually moves faster than the individual waves. I think the large lobe at the top could grow and even crash given the right conditions.
