I believe the diamond formation is mostly for when you want to penetrate enemy lines not do damage. It can be seen in the video how the diamond fully went through the infantry line formation, which in theory should allow them to disengage and move behind enemy lines without slogging their way through the entire formation. This can be useful such as if artillery is behind the infantry to quickly penetrate the lines and destroy it. Other than such cases as those though it is pretty bad.
The problem is with how NTW works, you can just pull them through anyway, since they aren't always engaged when pulling through you don't really have to slog through the entire formation. + Said Diamond makes you a lot weaker to a round shot cannon ball even if outside of canister.
Diamond formation in NTW used when cav unit expected to run under fire from front to reduce the casualties of the unlucky frontal charge, also the formation is more centered (same as infantry centered attack on enemy line), meaning to cut through the center of a unit fight flanks separatly (it is shown in a morale characteristic of unit that it fights on flanks, or concerned about it) and it is more defensive, then attacking formation because of, as you said that, the number of involved into a fight cavalrymen, that again makes enemy to try swarming your unit and fighting on its flanks, while your men are staying together despite same penalty and because of that having higher morale at the end of a fight, same with infantry attacks, thats why its more likely to use a proper grenadiers for the "wide line" attack relying on their attack, defense and high morale
"Diamond formation in NTW used when cav unit expected to run under fire from front to reduce the casualties of the unlucky frontal charge, also the formation is more centered (same as infantry centered attack on enemy line), " These two are opposed, the enemy fire typically fire towards the center of the unit, therefore this deeper but less wide formation takes more casualties from a direct frontal charge. While both typically center so there typically isn't much difference. @@thetotalwarsmaster ty will use that knowledge when i'll be playing in vanilla NTW. I am used to play NTW3 mod for almost 2 years so yeah, kinda forgot about vanilla and "creativity" of brits

u should show another way to deal with lancers / skirmishers if possible 🙏🏽
lancers/gun cav*
Very uphill battle there, lancers is deep formations in forest + inf. Shooter cav is extremely difficult, I, myself am trying to figure out.
Please do which elite units are the best and which line infantry is the best for each faction!!
