The moment when you pay over $15,000 a year for college and you have to go on youtube in order to have clear picture of significant figures because your professor doesn't know how to teach.. SMH.. Only after watching your video, I finally understood it better.. Thank you!
Dear Tyler, I would like to genuinely thank you from the bottom of my heart for uploading these videos and taking time out of your day to help others. It is only because of you I am finally understanding this, and although that may not seem to be important, it means the world to me. Once again, thank you.
I can't thank you enough for all the trouble you took making those videos just to make sure students understand the concept. We all owe you a lot mister! ^_^
@wouternet94 Yes, I'm sorry about that. I made these videos with North American and Asian audiences in mind. I hope to be able to make a European version soon. However, just remember that commas and decimals are switched and you should be OK. So I write two thousand three hundred and three tenths as 3,200.3, and I think you would write it as 3.200,3 but if you just keep that switch in mind, all the other math is the same.
Hey everyone, I'm here to help. If you have any questions or just want to learn more, click on the link in the description above. It'll take you to a page where you can ask me questions.
@RKamal97 yeah, that difference has to do with the decimal point. watch my video "significant figures with zeros (1.3)" and it will give you all the background you need on this. i think that's what it's called, i don't remember, you can just youtube search "significant figures 1.3"
I’m watching your video in 2020 during the distance learning due to pandemic and I have got to say thank you for making chemistry easier than my professor. These 10year old videos are the best!!
I do have many videos on Dimensional Analysis, and some on Moles! My first DA one is called "Converting Units with Conversion Factors." Watch that and then you can go from there.
it applies anytime you're doing math with numbers that you measured (like on a scale or with a beaker, etc.) if you have the time, please please please check out my videos called "why are significant figures important?" and also "significant figures with counting numbers and measurements" and i think you'll definitely better understand how and why sig figs apply to science.
I'm taking a college chem class and I feel that I've really been learning everything via TH-cam video's. Iif it wasnt for that and your videos which have really made things click for me I would be completely lost. Thanks for helping this returning student!!!!
Thank you so much. I'm in the 8th grade and my teacher didn't really tackle significant figures and that is why i got really confused to what my final answer is for the problem solving. 😊
@SingingGirl900 that's right. to make sure you totally understand sig fig rules with zeros, you might want to check out my video called "significant figures and zero (1.3)" where i teach all the ground rules.
my lecturer spent 40mins trying to make me understand this and I still don't understand but you sir, only took less than 10mins!! Thank you so much for clearing my head!!!
You're a life saver! Thank you so much! :) Very clear and concise: exactly what I needed! If I'm struggling, I'll definitely be watching your videos from here on out.
Thank you for making these video lessons on significant figures ! You explain so clearly and I love that you did so many practice examples ! I understand my chemistry hw alot more now .
finally i understand. Thank you Tyler. On behalf of all students that have terrible teachers we thank you for explain this concept to us, and you did a wonderful job, Again thank you.
I’m taking the intro to Gen chem. Our professor spend almost 2 hours to explain the significant numbers. However, it was waste of time. I literally understood the whole concept with this video. Keep it up.
I am so thankful for these videos. I am taking chemistry for the first time in college, and my teacher couldn't explain these concepts at all. When we would ask her a question about the rules, she would reply, "I'm not sure, Ill have to get back to you." This semester should get interesting.
Very Well Explained. You achieved what a lot of teachers at my school don't always achieve which is a problem, which is practice problems, instead of JUST of explaining. So this helped...
Thank you so much! I have a horrible chem teacher this semester and you've taught me more clearly in these videos than she has during her almost 5 hour labs/lectures.
You practically saved my GPA! In chemistry when my teacher was giving us practice problems I was CLULESS! and now im like a boss (: No words can tell you how thankful I am ! Thank you! :)
@Taimoorabdullah that's the whole point of sig figs--that decimal point makes a BIG difference. watch the significant figures and zero (1.3) video to learn about this.
Thank you making these videos Tyler! It really helps! I'm doing h Chem over the summer and we go so fast. You're videos are reviving me and I'm actually understanding :)
It's only for science, and more precisely, only for measurements. Here are two videos of mine that address your very question: "Significant Figures with Counting Numbers and Measurements" and "Why are Significant Figures Important?"
I am so grateful to have found you! I did not take chemistry in high school as it was not required in order to graduate. My son has just started his first semester of chemistry and significant figures was confusing to both of us. Your video series has made it all so clear! Thank you for taking the time to explain this concept!
Thank you so much! I have a Physics test tomorrow and I was freaking out because I didn't understand sig-figs, but thanks to you I have understood them. Thanks for the help, now time to go own that test! :D
Me to Tina - these are the clearest and best explanations I've seen - will also have a look at the scientific notation video, before submitting my assignment! Thank you SO much!
OMG! Thank you! My chemistry professor was trying to rush this lesson before the class session was over, I was terribly confused! I rushed home to youtube this! This made it sooooooo much easier to understand & remember! Thanks a ton! :)
Great question! For a discussion on this topic, watch my video called "Why are Significant Figures Important?" And then for more info you can also watch my video called "Significant Figures with Counting Numbers and Measurements."
i don't blame you, really, i hate significant figures. i make these videos to help people who have to learn them for school, but i think they're stupid myself. however, if you want to know why significant figures are important for science, watch my video called "what's the point of significant figures?!?" you probably won't like them any more, but you might learn why they're used.
That's why I love TH-cam. It can help me with my studies. I can't understand my teacher explaining infront. But with the help of this guy, Ahahah.. my other classmates cant understand it😂 Ty sir for uploading this vid.
Excellent video, thanks. however I learnt two simple rules 20 years ago which i'd like to share with you all. 1. for a whole number all the digits are significant between the first and the last non-zero digits. 2. for a decimal number all the digits are significant between the first non-zero digit and the last decimal. e.g. 0005203.0034090 will have all the digits between the first non-zero digit (which is 5) and the last decimal (which is the 0 right next to 9). hence it has 11 sig figures
i'm so glad it helped! i know sig figs can be a real pain, but believe it or not they have a purpose. if you have a few minutes, check out my video "what's the point of significant figures?!?" and then you'll understand what they're for. but i hear you, they're still irritating.
man your a saver... i have my finals coming up and i did not get the significant figures unit.... know i know i can pass my final... once again thanks and keep making these videos.
I got a youtube account just so that I could tell you that I love you. 2nd day of chemistry, and I was already contemplating dropping. What do you mean 17 is the only significant number in 1700? I'd rather have 1700 dollars than 17 dollars! I figured I'd never get it. I watched all four of your videos on the subject, and while I still wish it didn't exist, I now understand the rules of significant figures. Thank you times 3,000,000,000,000,000.
Hi Tyler! Thank you so much for making these videos. You helped me a lot and I know you will help more people out there. I have already taken this up when I was in High school but didn't quite get it so many thanks! xx
you are awesome. Our chemistry professor here in Alex. Egypt told us all this ur videos in 10 mins, supposedly!!!! D: I love you sir. Keep on doing these videos.. !!! :):) I was starting to lose hope, and I'm still in my first week of college.
hi! thank you so much for your videos...it helped me to do my homework; furthermore, understand what i'm doing instead of just copying what the teacher put on the board with no idea of what that meant. i'm planning to watch all your videos. your explanations are easy to understand and very inviting to learn more!
#UttamPal in 0.0040030 the last zero is significant due to the decimal point in the number because if there is a decimal point in the number, the zeros to the right are always significant.. I also got stuck here but Tyler never leave us with any ambiguity.. love him :) hats off for him!
Just started my chemistry class and my professors accent is really strong. Yikes!!! I'm going to need all the help in the world...thank you so much for your videos on sig figs, they really helped me.
Thank you for this video. I started a chemistry class and this was confusing in class but you video makes it so much easier. Thank you for the practice problems.
VERY VERY VERY helpful THANK YOU SO MUCH!! YOU MAKE THIS EASY AND SIMPLE ..MY TEACHER TRIED TO EXPLAIN THIS TO ME OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN I COULDNT GET IT , I FELT LIKE A DUMB KID BUT YOU HELPED ME SMHH THANK YOU DEAR.
The questions in my test never ask how many significant figures there are... They always ask to round numbers like 54070 to 3 significant figures... I don't get that
so good. keep it up sir. hahaha. i understand you and i appreciate of what youre doing. please continue of what youre doing. it helps a lot of persons like me
The moment when you pay over $15,000 a year for college and you have to go on youtube in order to have clear picture of significant figures because your professor doesn't know how to teach.. SMH.. Only after watching your video, I finally understood it better.. Thank you!
seriously! hahaha
Your $15,000 would come to exactly 2 S.F (significant figures) sir.
+Calum Sullivan so what your saying is that I only have to pay 2 dollars? and for med school the cost can go over 100 000 dollars WTF
maybe mate just maybe?
College?
This guy is amazing at explaining chemistry, much better than my college professor.
Straight facts bro
Dear Tyler,
I would like to genuinely thank you from the bottom of my heart for uploading these videos and taking time out of your day to help others. It is only because of you I am finally understanding this, and although that may not seem to be important, it means the world to me. Once again, thank you.
thanks for the kind comment! i do have a video on that, it's called "scientific notation and significant figures (1.7)"
I can't thank you enough for all the trouble you took making those videos just to make sure students understand the concept. We all owe you a lot mister! ^_^
Lol
as a guy who learns by examples, this helped so much. i had no idea how to work them out until now.
this video is almost 10 years old and just helped me with significant figures, LOL. Blessed!
@wouternet94 Yes, I'm sorry about that. I made these videos with North American and Asian audiences in mind. I hope to be able to make a European version soon. Omg thank you... I just failed my first Chem test and you are helping me so much because you teach in a way I can understand! Thank you!!!

@SingingGirl900 that's right. to make sure you totally understand sig fig rules with zeros, you might want to check out my video called "significant figures and zero (1.3)" where i teach all the ground rules.
crystal clear explanation!! Thank you!! 😄😄

11 years since you uploaded this but your video is still useful to us. Online class sucks!
It's only for science, and more precisely, only for measurements. Here are two videos of mine that address your very question: "Significant Figures with Counting Numbers and Measurements" and "Why are Significant Figures Important?"

Thanks a lot buddy. Your videos are still incredibly helpful even after 6 years! I guess sig figs will always be around in science =)
You've made things so much easier. My Chemistry professor confused me a bit, but now things are crystal clear. Thanks!
Thank you so much! I have a Physics test tomorrow and I was freaking out because I didn't understand sig-figs, but thanks to you I have understood them. Thanks for the help, now time to go own that test! :D

you even spent time to show every kind of possible zero placement :| ! youre da best
you are my savior omg
I am so glad you posted this. I am taking an online physics class and this has saved me!!!!
man your a saver... i have my finals coming up and i did not get the significant figures unit.... know i know i can pass my final... once again thanks and keep making these videos.
This helped a lot! My teacher didn't bother to go into this in depth but I'm happy you did. Thank you!

First time in life, I m not bored of doing similar examples .
You are better than my teacher Thank you soooooo much
One of the best Tutorials i have seen.
I've been so nervous about this test tomorrow but this saved my life!
Hi Tyler, I was struggling with significant figures until I watched your videos . Thanks for the help this should help me with my Chemistry exam
got a test tomorrow on all of the the stuff we did. So im watching all of the videos you helped me with.
Hi Tyler! Thank you so much for making these videos. You helped me a lot and I know you will help more people out there. I have already taken this up when I was in High school but didn't quite get it so many thanks! xx

Your teaching method is pretty good. You always straight to the point! Thanks
I'm doing a maths course from home and this has helped a lot with the zero rule. Thanks!
hi! thank you so much for your videos...it helped me to do my homework; furthermore, understand what i'm doing instead of just copying what the teacher put on the board with no idea of what that meant. i'm planning to watch all your videos. your explanations are easy to understand and very inviting to learn more!

this practice is really good! the questions are well-chosen
Thank you for this video. I started a chemistry class and this was confusing in class but you video makes it so much easier. Thank you for the practice problems.
He is the best. Totally made me understand MUCH better the significant numbers!!!! Thank you SO much!!!! THE BEST!
I really appreciate all of this that you do. It helps tremendously.
You're a great explainer as well!
Thanks.
@Luxrio21 i teach this in the video called "significant figures and zero (1.3)"
Thank you young man. You are a natural teacher.
The questions in my test never ask how many significant figures there are... They always ask to round numbers like 54070 to 3 significant figures... I don't get that
Lauren Silvestro it means you should round to a digit three number. which will be 541
no it would be 54100
Awesome Video!!! I am so happy I am understanding this! Wish all professors teach like you do .
Thanks
I left lecture so confused, these videos saved me!
3,008,000 was tricky, thank you for the clarification !
very nice learned ALOT in the first 2 mins than my what my teacher lectured for days.
so good. keep it up sir. hahaha. i understand you and i appreciate of what youre doing. please continue of what youre doing. it helps a lot of persons like me
This guy should have been my chemistry teacher. I totally get it now.
You are awesome! I am solving all the problems in my textbook now! I really appreciate this because now I can pass my final!
Your video have made it so clear and easy! Thank you so much!!! Now I'm not nervous for my test tomorrow:)
