Hey, axeofcreation, just wanted to say thanks for all the time and effort you put into your tutorials and lessons. I realize how much is involved in each video lesson and, personally, I am grateful for people such as you that just want to share their knowledge/experience with others. You are appreciated. I don't care what the haters say. lol
@Yellow73mm I use Ernie Ball strings. The pickups are stock in the Agile (I couldn't tell you what they are specifically) and the Schecter has DiMarzio, X2N (bridge) and PAF7.
Thank you for posting all your Tool videos. It took me a week alone to get that opening riff(Jambi). Your Vicarious lesson is about the best teaching video i've watched. The captions really help. Keep it up. Adam Jones rules!!
I'm a bassist myself, and I could never figure out the moving chug breakdown prior to the solo before this video. So thanks for that. Also you are an excellent teacher.
Try this-Insane Mode- Drive 12(o'clock)- Bass 11- Mid12- Treble 1- Ch. Vol 3. Hope that helps. You'll probably have to alter it slightly depending on the tone of your guitar.
@steveo2440 In that guitar, the pickups are stock. Effects wise I don't use much. Hint of chorus/reverb/delay. Especially on the rhythm presets. When I kick in the lead sounds those effects are much more present.
@IllusionaryMind8 I've seen people play it that way. For me personally I like pulling off (on the low string) and upstroking the A string. Bottom line is whichever is most comfortable for you and more importantly which ever way allows you to express the riff in the best sounding way.
@09mcmahon I can totally understand that. That was my main concern with playing along. Though I felt with Jambi it was necessary since there are so many changing patterns and chugs
@77TOOLarmy haha, thanks man! I've had a couple inquiries about Jimmy so I might do that one. Both Jimmy and Pushit are a couple of my fav all time Tool tracks.
the triplet works best if you pull off the D string and land your finger on the a string also pulling off but not playing it. So pull off D and A string when doing the triplets
@eccoboy I've seen people play a dead note instead of an open A but I like the way the open A sounds. Really resembles a (drum) triplet tom roll. I hear it when I play. Lines up right with a tom hit. Unless thats what I'm hearing. Either way I dig it. Theres always another way to play everything!
That pull off lick is badass! I was playing it all wrong. This is the first time I saw/heard about that type of pull off method. now I hear it in other tool songs as well. Thanks for that!!
@tsyrlb Thanks for adding in and I'm glad you dig my videos. No disrespect but just saying its wrong doesn't clarify anything. If you feel it's wrong, then enlighten everyone with what specifically is wrong. Saying something "sounds wrong" is a waste of breathe.
Very thorough video. I couldn't get my head around how he was doing the triplets - I thought I just physically couldn't move my hand fast enough but I can do it now. Subbed.
Just using my Peavey Head. I usually keep effects to a minimum besides lead tones which usually include delay and reverb. Maybe a touch of chorus and/or wah pedal
@Toolminion1 It's means your boosting your Bass (lows) and Treble (highs) and reducing your Mids, thus creating a scooped sound (try and picture an inverse Bell curve). Every amp is different so the level of each will always be slightly different. This is a great starting point. What's your setup?
It depends. The songs you mentioned are all difficult for various reasons. Length or variation play a big part. Rosetta can be hard because certain sections are quick or the the solo is tough to count (feel) against the drums.
@Bassmastasnake33 As I've said, Jones plays it by rolling is hand through the pull off as you said BUT I like the way attacking the A string sounds. Play however you see fit!
If it's muddy lower your bass. Make sure you didn't miss understand me. The bass should be around the 12 0'clock position not maxed out or turned up to 12. Same with the others
Hey im not a guitarist, im just a drummer but i´ve seen all your video lessons related with Tool and Adam Jones. Nice work, and amazing sound! Congrats!
@cheaptrades @lukitzar Sorry to disappoint you guys but try and listen a little more carefully. He's definitely not playing the intro with 3 notes. It absolutely is the pull-off motif Jones uses all the time. Watch him play it live.
Thank you very much, this was a HUGE help- took me a while to get used to the intro, but turns out I had been doing it wrong for months anyway. Very nice job!
What's half minor? It's in a minor mode (Phrygian). The third fret (b3) makes it minor, first fret (b2) makes it phrygian. He doesn't play the sixth fret ( b5, which would make it diminished) thought if you play it, it goes unnoticed. I don't think that Jones has played the b5 since the Anemia album lol.
I have been playing and practicing this riff incorrectly for like the last 5 years xD. I was doing 4p3 0 6p5 0 etc etc for the opening. I was about to start singing the notes, so I could ingrain it in my head better before I came to this. Thanks. I had no idea this riff was this genius, the main riff, I mean, the one that starts the crowd up. One of the best metal riffs of all time, I think. Thanks again.
@kalikube Thanks! At the rate the Tool requests keep rolling in I'm going to have to keep posting songs. Does having me play along with the track help? I didn't with the H. video, figured I try it out and see how people respond to seeing the song played.
@TrippyTro See comments below. Personally I like the sound of attacking the 5th string. Try this...play the first two intro passes with the dead note then open up the 5th string when the drums kick in. Play what you think sound best.
@Toolminion1 Nice. How do you like the B-52? Make sure that you don't use the Amps distortion with the pedal. The pedal should only be used when the B-52 is set on the clean channel.
@OutsideTheWall94 When 10k days dropped and first began to learn that's what I thought he was doing as well. Try it with the pull offs (3-0) and see how it sounds.
@JackCarver10 It's actually later in the song where the 2 has the triplet on it but seriously, it makes no difference lol. If you feel it there or he feels it there then kill it! There is so much (slight) variation on all his riffs.
Adam’s pull through is actually easier to do than this technique because all you’re doing is literally “pulling through” the fret and hitting all the notes. It’s also good for strengthening the skin of your first finger
Great, great lesson. Really helps me understand what I'm actually doing when I play this song. Tool is so fascinating and inspiring type of music. Great sound and great playing man! :)
Depends on your practice. When I started it took about 6 months to be able to get through metallica, nirvana and slayer song...or a least hack my way through them. For me it took longer to find my "voice". Learn the riffs you love. Understand how to re-create them and you'll be able to make them into your own.
@5nugg Sorry man but I would adhere to the lesson. Jones has been using this technique for years now. He's mimicking a tom roll not playing 16th notes on the low string. Thanks!
Until you learn how to play the song, it really doesn't matter what amp or pedal he is using. That "awesome tone" you hear is him knowing what the hell he is doing with his fingers. Stop worrying about what gear he is using. Worry about learning how to play guitar, and you will sound good. Practice enough, and you. An make a shitty solid state amp and a $50 distortion pedal sound like James Hetfield. But if you suck, you can play on Hetfield's rig and it will sound like a crappy guitar player making noise
@faaip0de0oaid Not wrong. Just different. I personally prefer to play (strike) the open A (muted). It feels much more natural and really captures the "tom roll" feel.
@axeofcreation Yeah I wrote that comment just before you explained that there's the triplet on the less palm-muted part right after the one I meant and it started to make sense again. You encourage me to PRACTICE guitar, didn't do that in years. Thanks
@TheDraconator Vicarious never seems to get the love it deserves. Great track! When you say "Outro" are you talking about the rolling triplet slurs at the end? They're pretty quick! Fun to play!
i guess others might have mentioned this but the a-string is not touched during the intro riffs. Its all bottom d-string, and you need to have the right technique to pull it off. It sort of consists of a pull-off with your left hand inbetween alternate 16th picks with your right hand, and then it will sound correct ;).
I learned only two things from this video. 1) guitars were not made to fly across rooms and 2) I have wrists like an old lady
Hey, axeofcreation, just wanted to say thanks for all the time and effort you put into your tutorials and lessons. I realize how much is involved in each video lesson and, personally, I am grateful for people such as you that just want to share their knowledge/experience with others. You are appreciated. I don't care what the haters say. lol
yea i agree hey i have spent so much time watching these vids aye. thanks!
@Yellow73mm I use Ernie Ball strings. The pickups are stock in the Agile (I couldn't tell you what they are specifically) and the Schecter has DiMarzio, X2N (bridge) and PAF7.

Never realized how djenty the opening riff is. You can tell Jones like Meshuggah
Francis Ducharme they said that Meshuggah was an influence on the album 10.000 days
@@danieldemetrio6474 can confirm
@atomiicx Awesome! Thanks for the excellent feedback!
1st lick is wrong. No triple chug. He uses a pull through technique. Check ben ellers vid. He shows the lick in detail.
I'm a bassist myself, and I could never figure out the moving chug breakdown prior to the solo before this video. So thanks for that. Also you are an excellent teacher.
Jones slurs everything. I mix both. Play however and whatever feels not only comfortable but sounds good to your ears
Solo starts at 8:20 if you want that
Exactly why I came
@Toolminion1 It's your basic "scooped" EQ setting. Boost the Mids a little more than usual.
You make great tutorials man. Just started a tool cover band and your videos are helping so much with all the subtleties in their songs. Thanks dude!
@IllusionaryMind8 I've seen people play it that way. For me personally I like pulling off (on the low string) and upstroking the A string. Bottom line is whichever is most comfortable for you and more importantly which ever way allows you to express the riff in the best sounding way.
My dogs name is Jambi 😊
@edge9in Thanks! Glad the video helped out.
@09mcmahon I can totally understand that. That was my main concern with playing along. Though I felt with Jambi it was necessary since there are so many changing patterns and chugs
@Buckhummerable Sometimes. I'll either use a Wah or add on a Auto-Wah effect. I do this because I don't own a talk box.
this is, without doubt, the most comprehensive, helpful youtube lesson i've seen. thank a lot! and keep it up!
@77TOOLarmy haha, thanks man! I've had a couple inquiries about Jimmy so I might do that one. Both Jimmy and Pushit are a couple of my fav all time Tool tracks.
@DJ330k That's probably the next one I'm going to do. A lot of people have asked for it plus it's really fun to play!
the triplet works best if you pull off the D string and land your finger on the a string also pulling off but not playing it. So pull off D and A string when doing the triplets
That's how I play it. I picked it up video for clarity.
Thanks for the video I was able to learn it 😀😀😀
+Mikey Medina I was lost until this comment. Thanks.
Stephen Peek anyone can play nirvana
Stephen Peek as anyone can play tool as well
@eccoboy I've seen people play a dead note instead of an open A but I like the way the open A sounds. Really resembles a (drum) triplet tom roll. I hear it when I play. Lines up right with a tom hit. Unless thats what I'm hearing. Either way I dig it. Theres always another way to play everything!

@TheDobligator downpick the pull off then upstroke the A string. Once the rhythm gets tight you can slur the entire thing.
Very thorough video. I couldn't get my head around how he was doing the triplets - I thought I just physically couldn't move my hand fast enough but I can do it now. Subbed.
Hadrian Hughes Thank you and welcome!
@bebeard17 Understandable. It's quick and muted. Try just pulling off to it with a good mute. You might prefer that way.
The Peavey was an Amp Modeler, which is what I meant. I was using the Diezel Amp Model.
Just using my Peavey Head. I usually keep effects to a minimum besides lead tones which usually include delay and reverb. Maybe a touch of chorus and/or wah pedal
AxeofCreation, Thank you again for another great video. You, as always, did an awesome job breaking it down. Thanx for the help bro
@Ponskippa awesome!! Thanks a lot.
@Toolminion1 It's means your boosting your Bass (lows) and Treble (highs) and reducing your Mids, thus creating a scooped sound (try and picture an inverse Bell curve). Every amp is different so the level of each will always be slightly different. This is a great starting point. What's your setup?
@petecarvalho I don't have one. I thought I mentioned that in the video...
You can vaguely imitate one with an envelope filter and auto wah.
@sahilius usually about a day, depending on song.
It depends. The songs you mentioned are all difficult for various reasons. Length or variation play a big part. Rosetta can be hard because certain sections are quick or the the solo is tough to count (feel) against the drums.
@BishopMuzoreva It's an Agile guitar, though Im not quite sure of which model.
@metalmanky306 Thank you so much! I hope you find the other videos just as helpful.
Very cool! Thanks for letting me know! Your words inspire me.
I believe it does. It really emphasizes the speed of the song and rounds out the explanation of the different parts
Thanks for the helpful advise Ryan I appreciate it!
ADAM JONES IS A GENIUS!!! He's so awesome and you are too!! Subscribed.
Hey im not a guitarist, im just a drummer but i´ve seen all your video lessons related with Tool and Adam Jones.
Nice work, and amazing sound! Congrats!
@Mr0Christian0 I was using a Peavey Vypyr head at the time. I no longer have that head.
@cheaptrades @lukitzar Sorry to disappoint you guys but try and listen a little more carefully. He's definitely not playing the intro with 3 notes. It absolutely is the pull-off motif Jones uses all the time. Watch him play it live.
I was struggling with this song for a while but with this lesson so much easier...thanks!!
@CaptainGalacticMusic Much appreciated!
Thank you very much, this was a HUGE help- took me a while to get used to the intro, but turns out I had been doing it wrong for months anyway. Very nice job!
@JosephMCorbett Thanks. Well stay tuned, more goodness on the way!
Adam Jones is a rhythmic monster. Nice breakdown!
thank you DERS for teaching me one of the greatest songs known t man kind!!!
What's half minor? It's in a minor mode (Phrygian). The third fret (b3) makes it minor, first fret (b2) makes it phrygian. @3xplisit My gear is listed on my channel page. I'm using a Peavey Vypyr Head, Diezel amp modeler. Thanks!
Great fucking tone man, great job on the lesson
@TrippyTro See comments below. Personally I like the sound of attacking the 5th string. Try this...play the first two intro passes with the dead note then open up the 5th string when the drums kick in. Play what you think sound best.
dude!!! thanks for the lesson, this is a really great riff.
thank you man i always needed help learning this song
amazing/ simply amazing guitar teacher you are axe
but this lesson is still awesome and the only video that correctly taught me how to play jambi so thank you very much!!!!
excellent lesson....will definitely be watching more of your videos
I believe I used the Peavey Vypyr 120 (and Diezel amp mod)...though I no longer use this amp...
@Toolminion1 Nice. How do you like the B-52? Make sure that you don't use the Amps distortion with the pedal. The pedal should only be used when the B-52 is set on the clean channel.
Awesome lesson. Great tone. Keep them coming, man.
Really good lesson, helped a lot more than the tab. Thanks!
You sir, are amazing. Please keep up the good work!
@OutsideTheWall94 When 10k days dropped and first began to learn that's what I thought he was doing as well. Try it with the pull offs (3-0) and see how it sounds.

The rhytm of this song kills me but your video helped a lot. Thanks, man!
@blindwolf343 Thank you good sir!! That part is definitely tricky but once you can hear the pattern you can pick it up pretty quickly.
Great lesson. You're such a good teacher.
@AcidSh33tz You have good taste! Thank man!
Adam’s pull through is actually easier to do than this technique because all you’re doing is literally “pulling through” the fret and hitting all the notes. It’s also good for strengthening the skin of your first finger
Playing Invincible = concrete callous on index

amen
Manly and Loving It On fucking point.
Manly and Loving It give this man a medal
Axe. I was wondering if you could do a gear video and settings for how you achieve your tone for Tool. Thanks for the vids!
@faaip0de0oaid Not wrong. Just different. I personally prefer to play (strike) the open A (muted). It feels much more natural and really captures the "tom roll" feel.
@XxUndeniedxX Thanks!! Let me know if I can help with anything
Dude, you freaking rock! Nice stuff here!
this is one of the best Tool song.....idk if this is the exact right way to do the intro, but anyway, i liked this tutorial...
@axeofcreation Yeah I wrote that comment just before you explained that there's the triplet on the less palm-muted part right after the one I meant and it started to make sense again.
You encourage me to PRACTICE guitar, didn't do that in years. Thanks
Thx from Catania, Sicily...
Also, have good skills. Good playing. Just remember it's "shine on through the center" not severed as most people think. GJ!
@TheDraconator Vicarious never seems to get the love it deserves. Great track! When you say "Outro" are you talking about the rolling triplet slurs at the end? They're pretty quick! Fun to play!

Will you teach us rosetta stoned ?
@legon85 thank you
Awesome. U should do a guitar collection video
I would imagine spring/early summer. I don't have an 8 string, without one the lesson wouldn't do the riff justice.
Awesome lesson Man, that was very helpfull, please make The Grudge next.
Yeah the left hand pulls down to the open string, more fluid and efficient, makes sense to Newton too.
You sir are a legend!
