Thank you from the states. The starter on top of the vertical log is a great tip.

Thanks, I never even thought about raising the flame higher. I only have trouble when it’s below 40° F. I don’t use the wood stove often. I put a can of alcohol with holes drilled around the sides, sometimes I use two. I can tell when it’s drawing by the alcohol flames. It takes a while depending on how cold it is outside. The alcohol can die out with the door closed even with the damper fully open. I have an insulated pipe chimney with a 90° bend. I think that may be why it’s hard to prime. Once it warm it draws fine, no smoke in the house.

I'm trying this but with 6 candles. It's a snowstorm outside and I tried lighting a normal fire and absolutely wrecked my lungs and home with smoke.
Its cold as all hell in here right now, and if I have the same problem later, my home will experience a condensation problem within the walls.
It's blowing so damn hard right now, I'm even unsure whether the draft is too strong or if it's air being pushed down into my wood stove. It's really har to tell. This is my first winter with a wood stove.

If the weather is bad and you dont have an anti-downdraft cowl, whereby the wind is redirected so it is much harder for it to come down your chimney then you could have issues during extreme weather like your having. Try it with the firelighters rather than the candles as i believe it will produce more heat than the candle, you may need to use a couple if it is particularly cold, but you need to get as much warmth into the chimney prior to lighting the fire if your having downdraft issues. We just posted a video on how to light a fire the top down method, which is another great way of lighting a fire to generate heat up into the chimney: th-cam.com/video/cH9K5WJ2ScU/w-d-xo.html I hope it helps and when the weather clears perhaps look into a different sort of chimney cowling to help prevent this from happening again in the future.

Just build a top down fire.

Yes, th-cam.com/video/cH9K5WJ2ScU/w-d-xo.html but if you haven't used a stove for a several months and it's particularly cold this is a useful first step before lighting via top down method
