Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile is a traditional Irish song, that came to be known as a rebel song in the early 20th century. Óró is a cheer, while sé do bheatha 'bhaile means "welcome home", although it is better translated as "your birthright is back home".
The woman of the song returning as a liberator, Gráinne Mhaol (sometimes known as Grace O'Malley) was chieftain of the Ó Máille clan in the west of Ireland. She is a well-known historical figure in 16th-century Irish history, and is sometimes known as 'The Sea Queen of Connacht', one of the most famous female sea-raiders of all time fighting against the english occupiers.
In a nutshell, in 1578 Gráinne Mhaol (whose name was already pretty famous at the time) was thrown into the dungeons of the Dublin Castle by the local English Governor, but was later released from prison on the pretext of bringing Risdeárd an Iarainn Bourke (Richard-in-Iron, Gráinne's 2nd husband) and his fellow Irish rioters to heel. As soon as she was released, reunited with her husband, Gráinne started plundering English shipping and managed to rout an English army sent to beseige her. The following year Gráinne and Bourke went into rebellion once again to secure their rights.
This song takes place following the Flight of the Earls in 1607 wherein the Irish lords who rebelled in the Nine Years War fled the nation to seek support from the French and Spanish, however despite being already dead since 1603, the Irish people look for Gráinne Mhaol to return and expel the English once and for all. In her raiding campaign she gained legendary status among Irish rebels and is widely regarded as one of the most popular and influential revolutionary figures in Irish culture even today.
Almost 15 years later Elizabeth I imprisoned Gráinne Mhaol's sons and half-brother, forcing Gráinne to negotiate their release. Even though she refused to bow before Elizabeth (as she did not recognise her as the Queen of Ireland), the talks led to the release of her family, under the agreement that Gráinne would stop attacking English ships. Realising the meeting was useless, Gráinne went back to attacking English ships shortly after her departure.
(she was later accused to have nursed to all rebellions in that province for over forty years.)
It was also sung during the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921). In the early 20th century it received new verses by the nationalist poet Pádraig Pearse and was often sung by members of the Irish Volunteers during the Easter Rising. Because although this is an old song, a little over 100years ago Patrick Pearse re-wrote it to support the planned rising (April 1916).
I hope we never ever lose the beautiful Irish people and their culture ❤
Best version I have ever heard. Young men with a deep passion and talent. That voice is outrageous.
I don't know who would be more proud of this performance, Padraig Pearse himself or Grace O'Malley. This was absolutely breathtaking.
I'm 100% Irish-American 4th generation. I love all your songs!!!! I've never been to Ireland. I don't know if I'll ever get there. My family comes from Co. Donegal, Co. Mayo, Co. Galway, Co. Limerick & Co. Cork. I've seen pictures & videos of Ireland which I thought was magnificent!!!!
I am 2nd generation! 😊
Great genes there girl!

Thank you for the translation of the song. It finally makes sense why this song is so significant, not only to Irish but to all of us who can feel it to the core of our DNA. Though we are not in/from Ireland, we are at home with you in our hearts. ☘️ Sláinte.

The anger and passion in the voice right at 00.55 onwards is literally why this song was written. The pain and anger of the opressed.
I love this version best. Seo Linn is such a great band.
Give me chills he sings with so much passion
Stiofán Ó Fearail from Seo Linn ;)
I'm an American man with Irish and Scottish ancestry and this song stirs my Celtic bloodline. This song is both powerful and inspiring to me!! Respect from the United States to Ireland and her ancient language and history.🇮🇪🏴🇺🇸
It was originally about thre return of Bonnie Prince Charle but it was made more politically correct by Pádraig Pearse.
Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile,
Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile,[7]
Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile
Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh.
A Shéarlais Óig,[8] a mhic Rí Shéamais[9]
'Sé mo mhór-chreach do thriall as Éirinn
Gan tuinnte bróig' ort, stoca nó leinidh
Ach do chascairt leis na Gallaibh
Chorus
'Sé mo léan géar nach bhfeicim
Mur mbéinn beo 'na dhiaidh ach seachtain
Séarlas Óg is míle gaiscidheach
Ag fógairt fáin ar Ghallaibh
Chorus
Tá Séarlas Óg ag triall thar sáile
Béidh siad leisean, Franncaigh is Spáinnigh
Óglaigh armtha leis mar gharda
'S bainfidh siad rinnce as éiricigh!
Chorus
Chorus:
Oh-ro, You're welcome home,
Oh-ro, You're welcome home,
Oh-ro, You're welcome home,
Now that summer's coming!
Young Charles, son of King James
It's a great distress - your exile from Ireland
Without thread of shoe on you, socks or shirt
Overthrown by the foreigners
Chorus
Alas that I do not see
If I were alive afterwards only for a week
Young Charles and one thousand warriors
Banishing all the foreigners
Chorus
Young Charles is coming over the sea
They will be with him, French and Spanish
Armed Volunteers with him as a guard
And they'll make the heretics dance!
Chorus
@@Bernaren60 I don't know about politically correct. I think of it as he simply perfected it. In any case, it is my observation that victory is always sweeter when you achieve it without the help of outsiders and I think that was the point of the revision.
Thank you brother for keeping our language alive may the creator bless you
I am German but within 14 days of a journey from Cork to Crumlin, I realized, that I love Ireland more than every country I have ever been and ever will be, including Germany. Eire forever!
An amazing compliment
Slante thank you
I’ve met a few German people in Ireland and Spain and I can say they are amazing people with good sense of humour it goes both ways bud. Much love from Ireland 🇮🇪 🇩🇪

RIP Sinéad see you at that studio in the sky
This reaches into your soul and grasps the longing in it.
We sang that in school every day back in the 1950’s/60’s.😊
We did indeed. The amount of Irish songs we leart in Primary school was amazing.
That stirs my soul. There must be some Irish in me somewhere. 10/10 performance regardless.
An absolutely amazing piece! Thank you very much. I’m a Canadian with Irish heritage. This is a spin chilling piece!
Seo Linn. Best version of this song.
I love Seo Linn & Stiofán Ó Fearail ! This is one of their best songs.
It seems like rebelling is starting to come back in fashion again. All around the world, the little guys are taking on the big guys and if not winning are giving them a serious bloodied nose. As an American and soldier of the 69th Inf, there is no better rebel than an Irish rebel!
Fág an Bealach("Clear The Way!") what a great history the 69th has.
@Port Celtic Songs went to Iraq with them in '04. When we were introduced to our battalion we were attached to, we had a pipper lead us out. We were respected because we never started a fight, but we ended the ones they started. We landed in Shannon Ireland on our return from Iraq and broke out our Emerald green regimental colors. The plane had a mysterious problem that lasted 2 hours. The locals bought out all the beer In the airport bar for us and there was a definite dent in the duty free stores stock of whiskey.
I'm not Irish, but was proud that I was able to bring honor to those Immigrant Irish that thought freedom was more then words put on paper and willingly took up arms to defend it.
Garryowen in Glory!
True and it is funny watching people have no clue what your singing and saying. Plus I'm 90 percent Celtic descent and 10 percent Nordic viking descent and I have the attitude of both merged together
Amen!!
Not a veteran but as an American with you on this!!!
The Irish played a big part in our winning our freedom!!!
We should support them in their fight against feudalism.
WE BOW TO NO CROWN!!!

My absolute favourite of this song, a Celtic war song 🥊🥊🥊
American guy with Scotish and Irish roots. I really love this. Wish there was more traditional songs done with good quality in Gaelic like this. As most Americans, I don't have much a connection to Scotland and Ireland but I'd really like to! Great song.
So glad you left that comment and hope you like a few more on the channel
so you are more likely a prod then? prehaps you need to watch people singing the Sash.
The band performing here is Seo Linn. They've got a youtube channel for their music (some other traditional Irish songs, some original songs - some in English, some in Irish, some in both) and do periodic livestreams. The performance this channel includes was ripped from their recording for a channel called Conradh na Gaeilge.
@@edthebumblingfool cén fáth a bhfuil tú ag rá an cac seo? personally irish americans claiming irishness tend to annoy me but you dont actually gotta stick sectarianism in there too. Whether some, often misguided or malicious, accept it or not the populace of this whole island is what constitutes the people of ireland, and so should not be discriminated against based on factors out of their control. A foundational principle of the united irishmen
As an american slave with full celtic lineage i will only fight for my homeland to which my family was removed to build new york i only will stand for the longevity of Ireland as a pure blood Bray and Sullivan!!!
I'm a 72-year old Irish-American woman, never set foot in Ireland, but those roots go deep in me. These songs resonate in my soul. I don't believe you can be Irish and not feel solidarity with Ireland and her people. My family came to America after the Great Potato Famine - that's all I'll say about it. 🇮🇪 🇺🇸
Some times words fail us and we can’t express what’s deep within us. Your feet may not have touched Irish soil but your heart like those of your ancestors was always in Ireland. Thank you for sharing your story
Irish blood runs through you and always will....... god bless America and Ireland

Yesss! A few years back I was looking for answers to some big questions.
Tired, I decided to switch off and watch a documentary about amazing women. I fell asleep to the episode of Grace O'Malley. My life has never been the same since.
Something switched on on in me that night.
I don't know exactly what my Irish roots are but I know they are there on both ma & da sides. AND our first family dog was a beautiful Irish setter called Jake. ❤
Thank you for this sensational music.

Definitely is my favorite of all Irish rebel tunes! I've heard several versions over the years but this is the best one. Great vocals and performance! Brings tears to your eyes, so full of passion and emotion! Also, really love Sinead O'Connor's version! She sings it with more of a feisty attitude, after all, that's what it's really all about when you know the lyrics.
It'd be great to see this story in a movie honoring Gracie for her heroics.

When Erin calls, we answer. Her sons and brothers died for this beautiful Isle of ours. All we ever wanted was to freely practice our religion. So many foreign sons had to die for this. Our rebel yell, the internal need to defend, all of it. GOD BLESS THE IRISH.
It’s about more than religion, the man who wrote this song wasn’t Catholic but born into a Unitarian family. He had a deep love of Irish language and culture as did many of the Republicans who came from Protestant backgrounds and fought in the Irish Uprising. More importantly it’s a song about fighting to be from oppression and tyranny, freedom of religious choice is just a part of this. Unfortunately the Republic of Ireland for many years didn’t live up to the ideals of the many heroic man who gave their lives for its recognition. The Catholic Church became the tyrannical force supported by hypocrites like deValera. The church and state functioned as one in many instances, but in recent decades, the power of the Church has waned and the people and their democratic representatives now reflect more accurately what was being fought for. Of course the North and the six counties mean the fight isn’t yet over but it’s hoped that this becomes more inevitable through political means in the years ahead. The Brits tried to label the fight as Catholic v Protestant just as Israeli’s do with their Jewish v Islam propaganda. In both cases it is more importantly a fight of the the oppressed v the oppressors. 🇮🇪🇵🇸
Gets better and better, ty lads
I ❤ this song!
Any time you can go and get the language of your ancestors and take it for your own, do it. There is no better way to discover how much of the culture, the deep beliefs, and ultimately the identity that's your own that an old language of the land can give you. I bet there are people around you who would send you for a summer immersion course, and if you could go like that you would come home changed, and with a gift for your own generations yet to come.
Excellent .
First time hearing this version .. brilliant ❤

This speaks to me on a cellular level
So this tune eventually became “ what would you do with a drunken sailor?” 😅
I wish you would come too Spokane Washington
Theres a little miscommunication with the english translation. The line isnt meant as "youre welcome home" a more accurate translation is "youre called to come home". Which..... is exactly what this battle song was, a calling for irishmen to come home and defend their mother.
An-álainn -- go híontach ar fad! Go raibh míle maith agaibh as an leagan seo.
