- (1 Oct 1974) RR7439A UK: BRITAIN'S GENERAL ELECTION
On October 10th 1974, Britain goes to the polls for the
second time this year to decide whether to give
Labour Premier Harold Wilson the firm mandate it
refused any party last February. For Conservative
leader Edward Heath, the election may be a last
chance - another defeat could mean his replacement
as party chief. Jeremy Thorpe's Liberal Party is out to
smash a two-party system that last time gave them
only 14 seats in return for six million votes. All parties
are agreed that the main issue is Britain's economic
crisis, especially inflation, which many believe if
unchecked threatens the traditional stability of British
society.
