I have really liked both open workouts. I’m a garage gym CrossFiter, the workouts and no mandatory floor plan has made it great. It feels like a very inclusive open this year.
Hey Dave, My point of view: One of the best Open regarding the workouts - especially regarding the Open to be „open“ for as many athletes as possible. Still, they‘re perfectly fine to make them difficult enough for the Elite and everyone else. People should be considering that there are still Quarterfinals and Semifinals to test more weight and gymnastics which then drives „better“ athletes to dive more into specific movements and weights if they want to be more competitive in CrossFit. And yes… 24.1 and 24.2 felt completely different. It was also a joy to see so many athletes to be able to attend the Rx-Version and still see a big range of times and reps. So… thank‘s!
To the person that complained about the women's DL weight being heavy compared to the men's, and thus "causing a 100 rep deficit in the scores of the women". Actually, you have it exactly backward. Of any barbell movement, the deadlift is the one that is least, as a percentage, reduced for the women, as women tend to have relatively more lower body strength, relative to upper. The differential in 24.2 can be largely (and I know that this is obvious to most of us here) attributed to the fact that the women and men had to pull the same meters on the ROW!
I think the critique comes from the idea that the open would encompass something Heavy (weightlifting), some skill (gymnastics), and some cardio. Overall the first two lean towards just cardio 24.1 - "can you sell out on your max heart rate" 24.2 - " Can you maintain your heart rate" Leaving most of us to think 24.3 would have to be gymnastics with a heavy lift. Paired with the increase from 10 to 25% qualifying for quarters, it makes you think - with the "ease" of the movements, will the cardio kings/queens make quarters only to be slapped in the face with really heavy and really technical workouts?
Hi Dave, thank you for your part in making the Open accessible. As someone who is still learning the basic movements & working toward the higher skilled movements, I very much appreciate the choices of movements and weights this year. It's the first year since I started CrossFit that I have been able to do each Open workout RX and the only thing holding me back is my fitness. I thought both workouts were fun & I'll be adding both into my monthly programing. Thanks again, looking forward to 24.3!
I loved both WODs and I hope we can keep them inclusive like this going into the future for the Open, you can crank up the movements when you get to QFs.
Much of the criticism is excessive and nitpicking. Some of the criticism is not. I appreciate that you have always addressed it even when I have disagreed with how you've done it. What I consistently saw that led me out of the CrossFit community was complete disregard for all of it, dismissing it as trolling, or attention chasing. Some of it is, much of it is not. Personally, I. miss the days of forging elite fitness, turning 7s into 10s, and the mantra of "like that, but better". - Sean Pastuch
I loved 24.2, and this is coming from someone who struggles with DU. I mean I had to do DU+single, single, DU. So it took me 150 jumps or so every round to get 50 DU 😂 but I still managed 4 RX rounds haha.
Best thing about 24.1 & 24.2 is I could do both from my home gym. I think the programming has been perfect. If my fitness was better I would have really enjoyed the workouts.
Dear Dave, can we please get an explanation of the (Soon to be?) 3 clues you've given us about the 2024 Open workouts? I usely get them but the 24.2 chess pawn was 100% cryptic. Thank you.
I loved that Seth Rollins announced the workout! A lot of people were saying how random it was, however Seth is a Crossfit fan/supporter and has been doing the sport for a while now. When WWE comes to my city, he drops in to local boxes
I have loved this years open workouts, great job! My personal experience is that it feels as though it’s been written for the everyday athletes, the affiliate members, the base and not the just games level minority. You want to win back participation, this is how. Keep up the good work.
Well I really struggle with double unders, and I thought it was an excellent TEST. I didn't do very well but it tested me. The row and deadlift was at the right level to allow you to go at a fast pace.
I'm a street parker. It's cool you're rocking that DC logo/SP Key. F the haters. Do you. I look forward to whatever challenge you have for me next. Sending love from the SP community.
Great show and thanks for being forthcoming and open in your videos. QUESTION - "With the rash of poorly done deadlifts by elite athletes in 24.2 videos will you involve yourself in invoking penalties or will this just be another "they have the capacity to do the required movements?" In essence, you've written a workout with standards that are layed out and the elite athletes ignore them and do what they want. How does the rest of the community take seriously the workout when the Open doesn't seem to be very serious in upholding the standards. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Hi Dave. Thank you for all you do for us and CrossFit, and very recently the Open. I’m an affiliate owner in Southampton UK and am currently guiding my first intern towards being a coach. After each Saturday Morning Lights (kinda got a ring to it, right?) we have mapped out what we have covered in line with the metabolic pathways, 10 general physical skills and the categories from the judges course (hang, pull, squat, press, other) and made some educated guesses at what may come next (ie, after 24.2 we hadn’t tested balance and flexibility that much, it’ll probably some form of squat with an overhead lift etc) - I guess this isn’t a question, more a note of thanks and to highlight that the objectivity and empirical nature of what we do is such a game changer to the fitness industry from the participants POV, to the coaches/trainers POV and outsiders POV. Loving the WIR vids, please keep them going for as long as you can.
Great community at large workouts! Appreciate the simplicity of floor plans for gym owners. When you picked the weights I thought average female and male body weights
Hi Dave, thanks for the updates, I along with many others appreciate it. Any chance you can add velcro patches to your online store with the TDC logo? Might be a good use of all the excess leather you're already using for your other projects (belts, wallets...etc). Love the open workouts so far, looking forward to seeing what's coming up for week 3.
Hi, CF HQ made helpful graphics and clear descriptions for movement standards in the open, for example the Deadlifts in 24.2. Lots of videos of Games competitors show a large portion of their reps did not meet the standards. Will there be consequences for those athletes who want to progress to Quarterfinals but choosing to not meet the Open standards? Thanks!
Hey Dave…. I think this year’s Open has been great.. I think as a focus of getting more people involved and watching my wife ( who reluctantly started a few years ago) be able to perform some workouts as a Rx workout and the pride / excitement she has felt has been great.. The focus is to grow the CF name and reinforce the fact that this is real fitness and REAL Healthcare.. Great work!!!
Dave, I want to say I'm sorry for any pressure my comment may have had regarding you announcing the open workouts, your explanation helped me remember more about how you like to live. I should have thought of that. I want to say thank you; you addressed my concern about having people announce the workouts that do not have media experience. Though they were not my picks; you still listened and did great. Please understand, that since 2014; you have been that person who has challenged me in a sassy way and made me a better CrossFitter. If and when you choose to do another one, please know it will leave a smile on my face and I'm sure a lot of others. Thank you for your leadership and direction.
Do you think there are massive similarities between the start of the 2022 Open and this year? People also complained about that and the similarities of patterns. This is very similar. A couplet and the triplet. Then we had the ol' stock standard thruster gymnastics combo. Obviously, the bigger picture isn't there yet but we are on pace for same Open.
I really appreciate both workouts so far. Really blown away by how effective a workout could be with just one implement (24.1). Spent the last year working on gymnastics, hopeful to see some included in 24.3 Great programming 💯
Sorry if you have gone over this Dave.. What's the idea behind submission windows for Quarterfinals? My biggest gripe and something you should consider if you want a higher % of participants signing up is getting rid of the submission windows. For normal folk who just want to play but have jobs or limited time it makes the whole ordeal quite a hassle. (For affiliate owners as well!) Not all gyms have 24/7 access and it causes issues for some. Perhaps consider requiring individuals who want to move on to semifinals submit within windows? Or really just get rid of them and let people do them 7 times if they really think it's gonna help. Thanks for always listening Dave!
the open has been excellent so far. looking into the retroscope, which open workout in the past should have been left out or didn’t fit into the spirit of what open workouts are?
Dave, so far it’s been a great Open for the gen pop. Maybe for Elite’s there are not enough high skill movements but seems to be a good test of fitness.
Hi Dave, Thanks for the update enjoy getting regular Crossfit content to watch/ listen to and enjoyed the open so far. Definitely learning the importance of doing the tests more than once. Have you guys at CF HQ thought of doing structured surveys on social media with open tests and Games related criticisms etc or topics throughout the season? Maybe once a month have upto 5 questions from the athlete council (inc past 3 yrs games level) and 5 from the public that then have a 1 to 5 scale of agree disagree to gauge and display it constructively? Could also have other metrics so you could break it down further into the different demographics etc. Keeps conversations open and puts a wider community lens next to Elite athlete perspectives too. Thanks for everything. Cheers.
Hey Dave, Been doing CF since 2013 and I just got my L3 in December of 2023. I went and applied to Seminar Staff but it says that y’all are not taking anymore red shirts for the time being. Any word on when yall will start accepting applications for seminar staff positions? Thanks!
Hi Dave. I'm loving the Open, so far. I thought 24.2 was a great workout and really enjoyed it. I kept hearing "it feels like a WOD we would have hear" from the members I coach, some of whom it was their first Open, which I loved to hear. Question about 24.2: what was your reasoning behind programming the same distance for males and females? (I liked it) I'm a coach who programmes for an affiliate and I wondered if this a "one off" or is it a direction we should be looking at more often and to become the norm? I appreciate there is a difference in programming calories on a machine compared to programming meters but I have always wondered why the meters can be programmed different for men and women, especially when we would run the same distance. I realise the power output is different to put through a machine compared to moving your body weight when running but I don't think it's too dissimilar, unless I'm mistaken? And not in comparison to the power output of racking up calories on a machine, right? I like hearing thoughts behind programming. Thanks for your hard work! - Hannah
Loving the open so far. Thankful to have been able to do the scaled version of 24.1 & 24.2. Something that we can all do in some form or another with elite athletes blowing the lid off the time domain or rep counts, but we all moved & we all sweat! The only thing I DON’T LIKE is you NOT hosting the Open Announcements. I get it, but sure missed you doing the last announcement. 😢
The CrossFit Games are possible for the .01% because of the work, time, money and love of the game that the other 99.9% put in. Thanks for what you do and your insight into your decisions.
The only criticism I would have is that for a smaller gym like ours with only a couple rowers, it made it hard to facilitate bigger classes. The workout was great however and I do really like the fact that the workouts are aimed towards everyone being able to participate. Good to have you back brother
Would you consider having a minimum work requirement to class you workout as RX? This would prevent the unfairness of people doing the workout RX when they should be scaled. EG 24.2 if an athlete did the row and deadlifts and 1 double under, they would score higher than an athlete doing 9 rounds with single unders. (Apologies if this isn’t correct just my understanding) As a coach it’s hard to sell the idea to an athlete to push a workout scaled when they could coast an RX workout and score higher, just an idea
I don't know why 24.1 or 24.2 would need to be criticized. I loved these 2 workouts! Something for us out here who are just trying to have our best hour of the day at the CrossFit gym. So, thank you from me. I appreciate you thinking about us. And I feel this is the best open yet! 🙂
Hey Dave, really appreciate you WIRs, makes me think more about the different perspectives more. What are your thoughts on including the metric weight conversions on CrossFit WODs, Games workouts, Open Workouts, etc. CrossFit is an international brand/sport, why is it limiting itself to imperial units (freedom units) and in doing so; limiting its potential audience….
Really great open so far - the workouts are a true tests in fitness. Pushes the regular athlete in their fitness and the elites can just go for it! Quarterfinals will no doubt showcase more skill and strength and that’s when you see people drop off. Which separates those elite to regular fitness goers. But the open is a fitness test and great for everyone. As a regular crossfitter I enjoy being involved in the open and being able to feel the discomfort and excitement in a competition. 👏🏼
i had the same thing happen. and retested today and tweaked it. added 110 reps. double unders are my nightmare for making quarters. my only weakness. and im completely happy with my trash score just short of 6 rounds. i did the best i could on a hobbled leg on my weakest movement
I 100% understand and agree with your discussion and argument around not assessing individual workouts in isolation. You can't see the full picture. However, do you have a "checklist", if you will, of things/criteria that gym-goers can look for to evaluate different programs?
Hey Dave, Newbie here, a Wounded Veteran, (55-59) & only 2 months into Crossfit. I thought 24.2 was appropriate after 24.1, having only learned DUBs & 1 @ a time LOL😂, I appreciate 24.2 after grueling 24.1. My shoulders definitely appreciated it. I tried 24.2 @ RX & Scaled(55-59); Scaled @ Adaptive. I'm sure you've done it already, but how about our amazing Wounded/Adaptive Veterans (not me) announcing any Open Workouts? P.S. Before anyone criticizes about any of the Open workouts, I'm Wounded vet, 57, Short athlete, & 139#.
The Open dates change every year and are also announced a relatively short time in advance. This makes it more difficult than it needs to be for professionals and parents: Business trips might get in the way, and (at least in parts of Europe) February is skiing season with school vacations, and hotels etc. for those have to be booked well in advance. Would you consider having fixed dates for the open every year to alleviate this? Given the current season as an example, CF could state that the Open always starts on the last Thursday of February.
Dave - thanks for these weekly updates, appreciate the insight. Could you talk a little about the CrossFit methodology you are using with the US Army? As a former Soldier, we did the push up, sit up & two mile run for our PT test. I didn’t start CrossFit until 2017, after I’d retired from the Army, and wish we would have had these types of workouts. So beneficial for what we did everyday as a Soldier.
hey Dave, I'm guessing you are going to say something like, i cant decide which of my children i like the most, but I'm curious if you have a favorite competition you have programmed, (regionals or games or open) and maybe one that you look back on and think that you made some mistakes with. like these videos a lot.
Hey Dave, I’m a huge fan. Looking back on the early days of CF the company, what’s one thing you wish you or HQ had done differently? What about looking back at the games?
My wife and I recently watched all the CrossFit movies and ended with “Every Second Counts.” Loved getting to see the evolution through the years. What did you prefer about CrossFit back then and what are you glad has changed today?
I agree that Dave is the best at announcing this but I think Seth did it pretty good! And I was very anti it beforehand. What I think we need is someone that consistently get to announce the open! And to find that one might take some time, what are your thoughts here? Finding one who get that job for a longer period or switching it up every year and week?
Want to start by saying it’s not a criticism but a genuine question. You mention adjusting weight for women. I’m assuming that as a man, you tend to program men’s weights then adjust for women? That would seem natural. Has there been any occasions where you’ve programmed the women’s weights first, then adjusted for the men? Or do you know any prominent programmers who approach it that way? Enjoying the WIR by the way, really cool to see how a lot of decisions are made and how things happen
No shade to you, but why does that matter? If he uses a conversion system, it is going to be interchangeable regardless of which gender he starts with?
@quon535 It doesn’t really matter, but it’s something I thought of when Dave was talking In videos at the ranch testing workouts for the games, I’m sure he’s noted that the conversion isn’t always perfect for different workouts particularly at the highest level. I find it interesting how it’s all figured out
Second question: why is there no comment section in online videos when marking a video as "needs review", yet the webpage says to include them? Further, there is no button for major penalty, minor penalty, etc. Why ask for video review when the method that has been in place is no longer there?
Great job with Open! I personally missed U and Ur workouts! I did 24.1 and 24.2 and nooo they R not similar at all. Not sure if the critics actually did the workouts or if they R just talking about them from the side line! I'm hoping to C BMUs in the 24.3, fingers crossed!
i think the weight of the hinge argument (as if it were on an exam, like it's weighted more) is why people are complaining about it.. we get there are differences, but the hinge is just a bigger argument against why it's not liked.
I've enjoyed the Open workouts so far...simple and effective. I'd really like to hear your thoughts on why videos aren't required to be uploaded for all open/QF workouts. I always find it strange that some of the highest-level athletes in CrossFit will work so hard to keep their videos private. This seems like such an obvious, easy and necessary change.
Hey I think the open is more accessible for people to do RX This is a seriously positive move for CrossFit as a whole because guess what, Hyrox is wiping the floor with CF because it's more accessible.
Hey Dave! Love the review shows. Question about Hiller. You stated that he goes out of his way to over criticize CrossFit the athletes and the business and I certain aspects I agree with you. But in particular when he addresses things like No reps or incorrect weights or people using improper camera angles, why do you feel that is a bad thing? If CrossFit makes specific rules and a rule book and athletes don’t hold that standard and someone points that out- it does not seem like they are criticizing, it seems like they are holding them to the standards CrossFit has set in place. To be fair is his tone sometimes inappropriate probably but that’s based on one’s opinion. It still does not change the fact that his points are valid.
I have really liked both open workouts. I’m a garage gym CrossFiter, the workouts and no mandatory floor plan has made it great. It feels like a very inclusive open this year.
I am an old (69) guy who does CF for general physical preparedness and maintaining life quality. 24.2 was great.

Hey Dave,
My point of view:
One of the best Open regarding the workouts - especially regarding the Open to be „open“ for as many athletes as possible.

Open workout options:
1. Do them.
2. Don't do them.
3. Shutup.
I think the critique comes from the idea that the open would encompass something Heavy (weightlifting), some skill (gymnastics), and some cardio. I am 51 and this is my first open and I have loved the wods. 24.2 was my favorite! Thank you! I hope 24.3 is a metcon again!
24.2 is classic CF. Everyone suck it up. Make it hurt good. Great Open workout
24.2 is a brilliant workout.
Very well programmed and really enjoyed doing it.
I loved both WODs and I hope we can keep them inclusive like this going into the future for the Open, you can crank up the movements when you get to QFs.

Same here, single _ double.. I ended up with four rounds.
I think you got it right this year! The Open is not for the Elite! The Open is for the community. The Elite have Quarters, Semis, and maybe the Games.
I like the Open very much this year. It's both accessible and makes the limiting factor the intensity you put in. Bravo.
I like it too
Best thing about 24.1 & 24.2 is I could do both from my home gym. I think the programming has been perfect. If my fitness was better I would have really enjoyed the workouts.
24.2 is a great ❤ workout
You shut them up Dave 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Rich and hos team actually said the same thing about not criticizing without seeing the entire picture
I loved that Seth Rollins announced the workout! A lot of people were saying how random it was, however Seth is a Crossfit fan/supporter and has been doing the sport for a while now. When WWE comes to my city, he drops in to local boxes
It was random and cringe af lol. Crossfitters are the butt of the joke enough, we don't need assholes like that making it worse
I love the direction the open is going. Keep it up Mr Dave and the team. F the haters
I have loved this years open workouts, great job! My personal experience is that it feels as though it’s been written for the everyday athletes, the affiliate members, the base and not the just games level minority. You want to win back participation, this is how. Keep up the good work.

Great workout, for everyone 👍🏼
It’s great having you back, Dave! This is the most inclusive Open in years!!
Great community at large workouts! Appreciate the simplicity of floor plans for gym owners.

24.2 was a great workout. 185 was the perfect weight to keep the gas pedal down
- Hannah
Was good to see Hiller's vids promoted, they are excellent quality and his heart is in the right place.
I love the Open 24 workouts! Thanks so much 😊
Loving the open so far.
I’ve heard nothing but the best for 24.2. Granted from those who have been doing this a few years.
I’m very new to this and enjoyed the challenge.
I have really enjoyed both Open workouts so far!! ❤
In May of 2021, CrossFit announced the ECHO Bike as the official air bike of CrossFit. When will it show up in the Open?
The workouts were great! There are always folks who want to complain, and think they know better.
I don't know why 24.1 or 24.2 would need to be criticized. I loved these 2 workouts! Something for us out here who are just trying to have our best hour of the day at the CrossFit gym. So, thank you from me. I appreciate you thinking about us. And I feel this is the best open yet! 🙂
Dave, have you ever considered having a ruck run at the games but with heavy weight up near 40kg?
Haters are usually people who can’t do something we do. Also know as jealousy
Open workouts have been great for what it is, the Open. Haters gonna hate no matter what.
Is it within the realm of possibility the games ever return to Carson?
Men and women are competing in different categories. Why are people comparing and complaining about the differences in prescribed weights and results.
I like 24.2. I haven’t heard anything bad about it. I watched Rich’s tips for the workout. He had a good attitude.
hey Dave, I'm guessing you are going to say something like, i cant decide which of my children i like the most, but I'm curious if you have a favorite competition you have programmed, (regionals or games or open) and maybe one that you look back on and think that you made some mistakes with. like these videos a lot.
Hi Dave. Who wins in a fight, you or Sevan? You can't use Doug but Sevan can use Avi.
Hey Dave, I’m a huge fan. Looking back on the early days of CF the company, what’s one thing you wish you or HQ had done differently? What about looking back at the games?
Loved the open so far all the workouts have been fantastic To us athletes aren’t the elites
I actually really liked 24.2. It’s usually the same people complaining all the time. Not always, but usually.
My wife and I recently watched all the CrossFit movies and ended with “Every Second Counts.” Loved getting to see the evolution through the years. What did you prefer about CrossFit back then and what are you glad has changed today?
Thanks!
Bet its the patriarchy.
@quon535 It doesn’t really matter, but it’s something I thought of when Dave was talking
In videos at the ranch testing workouts for the games, I’m sure he’s noted that the conversion isn’t always perfect for different workouts particularly at the highest level. I find it interesting how it’s all figured out
Second question: why is there no comment section in online videos when marking a video as "needs review", yet the webpage says to include them? Further, there is no button for major penalty, minor penalty, etc. Why ask for video review when the method that has been in place is no longer there?
Dave doing the open announcements is the best but anyone is better than Boz doing the announcements.
I personally liked 24.2 way more than 24.1.
I was waiting for you to announce your score on 24.2 seeing as you made a competition about it on Instagram 😅
I hated on 24.2 at first, then I had a blast doing it with friends. Think it’s not bad enough? Work harder
Hey I think the open is more accessible for people to do RX
This is a seriously positive move for CrossFit as a whole because guess what, Hyrox is wiping the floor with CF because it's more accessible.
but why two hinge workouts back to back
Is that a Kifaru bag on the couch?
i actually loved it and it made it fun because everyone should be able to do them even rx
