    Fun Fact: During Its original Japanese Cinema run, My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies were released together as a double feature with Grave of the Fireflies shown first and My Neighbor Totoro shown last.

    I'd like to mention some that didn't fit in the video:
    *Ginga Nagareboshi Gin (1986):* One of the first popular anime series in Nordic countries, still held dearly by many to this day. One of the more unique shonen series due to it's cast being mainly dogs that do battle.
    *Muumins (1990):* Based on a Swedish-Finn novel series and is creating a resurgence lately in social media with delightful adventures and characters.
    *Nadia the Secret of Blue Water (1990):* Anno's directorial work that was most likely the cause of his depression, due to his little creative involvement with the series. *(Evangelion may not exist without it)*
    *Berserk (1997):* Based on one of the most acclaimed manga series of all time. Influences many gritty medieval fantasy series (involving video games) to this day.

      I think the disrespect came from it being called the most notable Pokémon clone. For one, Digimon existed before with the Tamagotchi devices. Second, what made Digimon stand out was the storyline that stood out, even taking on darker tones that Pokémon wouldn't even touch with a ten foot pole, making it even popular for older audiences.

    • @Yokoelf2
      @Yokoelf2  5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Berserk was left out just because the manga had (and still has) a much bigger impact than the anime, though the 1997 anime is incredible IMO. But it's a very important series anyway, I understand. Ippo could have made in too... It's one of those that almost were included.

A lot of people I know who aren't into anime and manga in general seem to be familiar with Berserk as a result of the references made to it in other works and clips of the show that they'd seen on TH-cam.

    Doraemon actually was one of the longest running anime series in Japan.
    Easily one of the most popular anime to ever came out of Japan and have fans all over the world.
    Their "Kodomo" classification only hampered the sales and its appeal there in Japan,the rest of Asia having fans from 7 months to 77 years old.
    Grew up with the series and still have no intention of ever stop watching it.
    They still advertising "new" episodes every week or two at their facebook page.
    Doraemon movies are big in Japan though always flirting around with new movie almost every year since 1980 with Detective Conan.

    I really think think Azumanga Daioh should get more recognition. He was one of the earliest Slice of Life animes and at that time the closest to the modern ones in the genre. I would risk to say Lucky Star was inspired by him in some aspects (at least they put 2-3 references of it in their show).

    • @yotsubafanfan
      @yotsubafanfan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes!!! Azumanga doesn't get the love it deserves! I mean it's the mother of the modern Slice of Life genre. I'm not sure about Lucky Star but it was the inspiration for another big Slice of Life. A little known gem called Nichijou whom the creator Keiichi Arawi has sighted as an inspiration for the show. (He even made an Azumanga Daioh comic to celebrate its 10th anniversary.) If it doesnt get credit for being the mother of Slice of Life then it at least deserves credit for coining the term "Waifu" or having one of the earliest Web exclusive Pilots.

    I think saying Speed Racer is popular in the U.S. is a bit of an understatement. We call people behind the wheel Speed Racer either when they drive well or if we encounter an awful driver. Heck! We even consider him an honorary Saturday morning cartoon character! (No really, he was on amongst the greats. Both my parents watched it when it came on too the only give away that its an anime was the poor lip synching.) But to this day people have even made covers of the opening here! (The acapella cover by the Blanks on the tv show Scrubs is always the first to come to mind.) America LOVES Speed Racer!

    Ok, I know you mentioned "Hey, you forgot X" comments in the intro. But I think this si important. When you mentioned Love Hina and how it popularized Harem anime, THAT should have been showcased by Tenchi Muyo.

    • @Yokoelf2
      @Yokoelf2  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's a valid choice, it could have been Tenchi Muyo instead of Love Hina. Ah! My Goddess! was also an option I considered. I just felt that the timing to "present" the harem genre was better in the year 2000.

    17:17 Another fun fact about Paprika is that it was the first movie soundtrack to incorporate VOCALOID! LOLA (developed by Zero-G for VOCALOID1) provides vocals for the track featured in the video.

    A perfect selection, funny to see mamoru ooshi from ecchi, to ova and finally with ghost in the shell :')
    Some precisions : captain tsubasa, albator and candy were super popular in France and started a big wave of «japanisation» of the shows for kids, leading to a repression from the politics at the end of the 90s

    Good list, but I would also have included the movies "Wings of Honneamise" (1985) from Gainax for its maturity, incredible visuals and score from academy winner Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tezuka's "Cleopatra" (1971) for being the first theatrical anime for adults and finally Rumiko Takahashi's "Maison Ikkoku" (1986) and Izumi Matsumoto's "Kimagure Orange Road" for popularizing the romantic genre in countries like France, Italy and Spain and influencing later series in Japan like Love Hina.

    What was that one movie where something like...
    A hooded woman was stabbed by an arrow by some thugs in the forest and then there were purple human bird things with red eyes and when the little man sang, those bird things died
    Then I believe there was a giant dude with like a red cloak and white hair with his necklace
    Next was like the blue creature was eating a couple of people and it leaped at the dude but was killed before it laid a claw on him, next was when the red cloaked dude grabbed his necklace and used it and killed that one girl before he died
    That's all I remember when I saw it as a toddler
    (Idk y I saw that bloody anime movie when I was too young for that lol)
