    I really like how you mostly added animes that had significant influence in the anime franchise, rather than just 'popular' anime. It must have taken you a long time to make this vid. Thanks for your hard work!!

    Fun Fact: During Its original Japanese Cinema run, My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies were released together as a double feature with Grave of the Fireflies shown first and My Neighbor Totoro shown last.
    I bet Japanese Cinemagoers in 1988 were crying their eyes out after seeing Grave of the Fireflies and then getting cheered up after seeing My Neighbor Totoro.

    I'd like to mention some that didn't fit in the video:
    *Ginga Nagareboshi Gin (1986):* One of the first popular anime series in Nordic countries, still held dearly by many to this day. One of the more unique shonen series due to it's cast being mainly dogs that do battle.
    *Muumins (1990):* Based on a Swedish-Finn novel series and is creating a resurgence lately in social media with delightful adventures and characters.
    *Nadia the Secret of Blue Water (1990):* Anno's directorial work that was most likely the cause of his depression, due to his little creative involvement with the series. *(Evangelion may not exist without it)*
    *Berserk (1997):* Based on one of the most acclaimed manga series of all time. Influences many gritty medieval fantasy series (involving video games) to this day.

      I think the disrespect came from it being called the most notable Pokémon clone. For one, Digimon existed before with the Tamagotchi devices. Second, what made Digimon stand out was the storyline that stood out, even taking on darker tones that Pokémon wouldn't even touch with a ten foot pole, making it even popular for older audiences.

      Berserk was left out just because the manga had (and still has) a much bigger impact than the anime, though the 1997 anime is incredible IMO. But it's a very important series anyway, I understand. Ippo could have made in too... It's one of those that almost were included.

A lot of people I know who aren't into anime and manga in general seem to be familiar with Berserk as a result of the references made to it in other works and clips of the show that they'd seen on TH-cam.

    Doraemon actually was one of the longest running anime series in Japan.
    Easily one of the most popular anime to ever came out of Japan and have fans all over the world.
    Their "Kodomo" classification only hampered the sales and its appeal there in Japan,the rest of Asia having fans from 7 months to 77 years old.
    Grew up with the series and still have no intention of ever stop watching it.
    They still advertising "new" episodes every week or two at their facebook page.
    Doraemon movies are big in Japan though always flirting around with new movie almost every year since 1980 with Detective Conan.

    I really think think Azumanga Daioh should get more recognition. He was one of the earliest Slice of Life animes and at that time the closest to the modern ones in the genre. I would risk to say Lucky Star was inspired by him in some aspects (at least they put 2-3 references of it in their show).

    • @yotsubafanfan
      @yotsubafanfan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes!!! Azumanga doesn't get the love it deserves! I mean it's the mother of the modern Slice of Life genre. I'm not sure about Lucky Star but it was the inspiration for another big Slice of Life. A little known gem called Nichijou whom the creator Keiichi Arawi has sighted as an inspiration for the show. (He even made an Azumanga Daioh comic to celebrate its 10th anniversary.) If it doesnt get credit for being the mother of Slice of Life then it at least deserves credit for coining the term "Waifu" or having one of the earliest Web exclusive Pilots.

    I think saying Speed Racer is popular in the U.S. is a bit of an understatement. We call people behind the wheel Speed Racer either when they drive well or if we encounter an awful driver. Heck! We even consider him an honorary Saturday morning cartoon character! (No really, he was on amongst the greats. Both my parents watched it when it came on too the only give away that its an anime was the poor lip synching.) But to this day people have even made covers of the opening here! (The acapella cover by the Blanks on the tv show Scrubs is always the first to come to mind.) America LOVES Speed Racer!

    Good list, but I would also have included the movies "Wings of Honneamise" (1985) from Gainax for its maturity, incredible visuals and score from academy winner Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tezuka's "Cleopatra" (1971) for being the first theatrical anime for adults and finally Rumiko Takahashi's "Maison Ikkoku" (1986) and Izumi Matsumoto's "Kimagure Orange Road" for popularizing the romantic genre in countries like France, Italy and Spain and influencing later series in Japan like Love Hina.

    What was that one movie where something like...
    A hooded woman was stabbed by an arrow by some thugs in the forest and then there were purple human bird things with red eyes and when the little man sang, those bird things died
    Then I believe there was a giant dude with like a red cloak and white hair with his necklace
    Next was like the blue creature was eating a couple of people and it leaped at the dude but was killed before it laid a claw on him, next was when the red cloaked dude grabbed his necklace and used it and killed that one girl before he died
    That's all I remember when I saw it as a toddler
    (Idk y I saw that bloody anime movie when I was too young for that lol)

    13:16 But Digimon has nothing to see with Pokémon.
    Just because the names are symilar it doesn't mean that were symilar. Digimon just tries to adapt the V-Pets at an anime with a story (It doesn't well, but tries). Meanwhile Pokémon promotions their games. Monster Rancher would be a good example for it.
    Good video, btw. Congrats :3

    • @Yokoelf2
      @Yokoelf2  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well, Digimon is a different thing but used part of Pokémon's formula with kids that use magic creatures to battle (and also that evolve). I used the term "clone" in a very broad sense - even Yu-Gi-Oh can be considered a Pokémon clone in some way, even having a completely different story, but it does end up being a battle anime with a kid controlling magic creatures against others that also do so. All these anime, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade, Monster Rancher, etc. did got carried in Pokémon's huge success, attracting a similar fanbase. So that's way I used the term and wrote "part of it's formula". But anyway! They are certainly more different than the name implies. Thanks for your comment! ^^

    • @stephanecaron8894
      @stephanecaron8894 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      While "Digimon" follows a lot of the typical mon show formula, it is distinctive in that it also focused a lot on the kid's familial / real-world problems which were relatable to the kids viewing the show (divorce (Matt & TK), cultural/values dissidence between parent and child (Sora), the pressures of being a good big brother (Tai for Hikari), fears of abandonment (Izzy due to his parents not telling him about his adoption), death and legacy (Cody), etc.) over being 99% escapist fantasy like "Monster Rancher" or even "Pokemon".
      And speaking of examining real-world issues, I surprised that "Gegege no Kitaro" (particularly the current version) didn't make the list as that show is often on point with its kid-friendly social community on issues with current popular culture (Gaijin Goombah has at least two videos examining this). And similar things could be said about "(Digimon Universe) Appli Monsters".

    • @Yokoelf2
      @Yokoelf2  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, I consider it in a VERY broad sense. Even Angelic Layer can be considered a Pokémon "clone" in this sense. I don't believe it's a coincidence that the Angelic Layer manga started in 1999 during Pokémania. I don't know much about YuGiOh, but I know it had an earlier anime made by Toei that didn't ended up well, and the one that everyone knows also started in 1999. I know it's separate series but Pokémon did influenced on the trend and helped in the success of these series that also revolve about duels and are meant mostly for kids.
      Edit: YuGiOh season 0 is from 1998 so forget I said that.

    • @Yokoelf2
      @Yokoelf2  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Stephane Caron Good points, even as a kid I noticed that Digimon did touched some deeper themes and it was different than a "pure clone". I used to think that Digimon had better anime and Pokémon better games. I had a small space in the video but I mentioned that Digimon was a "distinct one" to give him some justice at least. Thanks for mentioning about the recent Gegege no Kitaro, I didn't know that.
