  • I run through, what is in my opinion, the best budget beach fishing gear you can buy for under $200 !! Yeah there’s cheaper but none compare to quality you get with the penn spinfisher combo !
    The Penn Spinfisher 950ssm with 12foot 8-12kg rod !
    It does the job and take the sandy condition on no problem ! for the price you can't go wrong ! If you're looking for a budget setup that will last you.... here it is

    I agree that the these are great bang for buck.. and while the Penn SSMs aren't sealed, they are dirt cheap, and very basic to work on/service
    ... I also love braid and use it in situations where you probably shouldn't. But that combo is probably the worst use case for braid I can think of. Go 15kg platypus lo-stretch, or something like that, and learn to slide bait for jewies. That heavy arse beach combo would suit that style of fishing just fine (on a budget).

    These reels are amazing value, it wasn't that long ago they were over $400.00. Always been a tank of a reel, still are I think, they just aren't as flash looking as the newer models, but probably way tougher. I bought one today, really can't go wrong for under $100.00

    100% best value for $ reel and rod combo, absolutely bullet proof. I have a 950SSM with an allegiance II. These are now my back ups as I have upgraded to a Battle III 10000 with a Powercrank, absolute beast of a set up for about $350.

    got 2 of the 850 reels, the drags are so smooth and like 3 other 40 year old penn reels that still work. All my rods are from the 1970's through hand me downs. 14ft beach boss 1 piece rods work great but a pain to transport lol

    Get a cheap car detailing brush to take care of the sand in the reel. That's my secret thing in my tackle box that's unusual.

    G'day Andy...while your talking about Penn reels. I ask kindly, how does the Penn "Spinfisher V11" hold up against the Slammer current models? I was looking at the "Slammer" model, instead I went for the "Spinfisher V11". I'm asking the question as you've had Penn Reels for a couple of years!
    Thanks in advance for any feedback.
    All the best for Christmas and the New Year!

    Been trying to decide between getting a 650ssm and a Slammer 590. I always heard the SS reels didnt like braid, but yours looks pretty good. Doesnt look like you can get rid of the bail trip on these, short of taking a grinder to it. Do you get much for accidental bail closures with it?

      Never had it on the ssm before mate , it clips over well and I’m launching decent size baits to shake the rod 👍

    I used the pen 750sm with a aqua tip 12ft rod for close to a year not a bad combo either drag though was abit to light for me being around 5kg max caught a nice snapper last year on it but sometimes in portland youl get a few rays and 5kg is just not enough lol. I've now gone overboard with saragosas but yeah that higher model with 9kg drag thats not to shabby at all pretty much perfect for nearly all fishing on land id say

      @auslifeandy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice ! Yeah the drag is abit weak at times but it’s plenty for gummy and snapper from the beach ! Anything bigger it just takes abit more time to land 👌

    Looking to get into surf and rock fishing, just wondering though, would braid be the best option for rock fishing? Braid is supposed to be a lot more abrasive than mono and I m wondering if it’s worth using braid or just using mono instead?

    • @auslifeandy
      @auslifeandy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think if you’re fishing with bait it may be better with mono to get more stretch and strength against the rocks… but I don’t often rock fish so can’t give a clear answer to that mate 👍

    so I’ve got a 650ssm reel already, looking for a longer rod for surf and off the rocks for snapper and the big fish
    I’ve seen the Penn Spinfisher ELITE surf rod, is that an upgraded model of the Penn Spinfisher SSM? Costs roughly 20-30$ more only, 12ft 7-15kg
    Just wondering if that would be a good choice too and would handle the big fish off rocks and the surf or not :/
    nonetheless thanks for the great info in this video! Much needed!

      I reckon that would handle a lot of stuff off the rocks mate if you’re chasing that size of fish ?

    • @auslifeandy

    • @JordanBFishing
      @JordanBFishing ปีที่แล้ว

    • @auslifeandy
      @auslifeandy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not the rod but people use the reel for trolling I believe mate
