    Happy to see you are on the mend. Stress and anxiety is the major trigger that exasperates acid reflux, especially with GERD. Cutting down on acidity foods and high sugar contents also helps but nexium esomeprazole that cuts acid production in the stomach certainly helps with reducing symptoms, although under doctor's advice if you need to take it any longer than 14 days. The problem with GERD anticids and gaviscon isn't strong enough to reduce symptoms or remedy the disease. Managing stress and diet is the only cure along with blood tests to rule out diabetes, allergies and autoimmune disorders. I have suffered with chronic GERD, bloated stomach and peptic ulcers now for over six years, regularly dosing PPI, sometimes under doctor's prescription for higher dosage which helps heal the ulcers when they flare up. I always worry they could begin to bleed or become malignant, it can be very scary but these conditions do effect 40% of the population at some stage in their lifetime, especially with ageing. It really can be a life changing experience, watching what foods you eat and making sure you get plenty of rest to help deal with anxiety. If I have to say what the biggest trigger is I would say 70% of the time is lack of sleep and stress which I have had plenty of through working night shifts over the past 10 years. God bless you.

    Dear Laura, first of all, thank you so so much for your video...through your video...I finally knew that i'm not the only one who going through the EXACT same problem as you did. I'm totally understand how you felt, how devastating and frustrating it is as we suffer a lot during our student life but in the end the doc came and told you it was NOTHING, it was FINE, Nothing serious...but deep down we knew there was something really really wrong. It's not like we want "something" to happen but those pain, those struggles that we going through are like HELL that no one would ever understand. My stomach pain and other symptoms has tortured me for almost 3 years...but still...doc can't find the cause and the worse is...there's no medicine that can give me a comfort. Not one...as time goes my symptoms are getting worse...at the point I felt like I wanted to die. But they just can't figure it out what's the prob. Laura, I hope you'll stay strong and be brave...there's times we felt like we want to gave up...but knowing that you're here, that makes me stronger. I hope you did too. May God bless you. And lets fight together.

    Hi Laura, I had an endoscopy last thrusday. They stuck me 15 times before they got my IV into a proper vein. I asked about doing it without sedation and they said I would not like doing the procedure while awake so they kept on poking me. Regarding your results I will suggest you get copies of the drs. report and all photos they have taken inside you and seek out the opinions of other doctors outside the UK. Look up American specialists or other specialists in countries outside where you are living and get their viewpoints on what else your drs. could investigate. Telling you to just live with this health problem is not acceptable. There is something wrong someplace to cause these health problems for you and it is their job to find the cause. Please keep on searching for a proper answer. I wish you the best of luck. Hugs!

    I had an endoscopy 3 days ago under sedation. Staff were lovely on admission. When I came to I was offered tea and toast. Couldn’t eat but drank the tea. Came home felt awful so I went to bed. A couple of hours later woke up in excruciating pain behind the breast bone. Called the ward spoke to the nurse ‘haven’t heard of that’ she said. Not helpful. Awful night. GP visit the following day. Sent straight to the hospital. Tests completed (all clear) after a general discussion with Medical Registrar turned out that I shouldn’t have had anything hot after the endoscopy as I had also had a biopsy. The ‘wound’ would have been too raw!! Mad frustrated and furious at the staff that they would offer refreshments which are unsuitable for post procedure. Ps. Nothing found at endoscopy now have to wait 3 weeks for results of biopsy. Not helpful like you Laura, as I can’t eat/swallow and expected to carry on until the results which knowing me will be inconclusive. I’ve already lost 8 pounds in just over a week!
    I do hope you’ve made a recovery Laura.

To everyone with acid reflux etc. I recommend you all get a good water distiller this help my partner get rid of UTI symptoms in 12hrs , in 24 hrs he was completly pain and all his discomfort disappeared. He had endoscopy, hospital visits , dr visits and all was done was recommendations to have gaviscon and omeprazole none of them worked. Also he was placed on antibiotics which was not needed as he had no infection. Please note only home made distilled water is recommended as its the purest water and drink at least 2.5 litres a day with less acidic diet so less sugar, dairy,spices,white bread ,chilli, curry, fresh and cooked tomatoes etc. I hope this info helps.

    First of all, I am so sorry to hear how much this is interfering with your life. I really feel for you. It is extremely distressing not getting an actionable diagnosis. I just learned of another type of endoscopy called trans nasal esophagoscopy (TNE) which goes through the nose and doesn't require sedation. Maybe that is offered in the UK and would be better for you for subsequent monitoring. It's significantly less costly in the US--hundreds of dollars vs. thousands.
    Also, I'm curious to know if diet changes have helped you at all. It sounded like you've tried lots of over-the-counter medications and prescriptions, but I couldn't tell if you had also tried to restrict trigger foods. If you haven't been able to be very strict up to now, I'd do an experiment and go very strict for a month and see where that gets you. I was also wondering if you have had a helicobacter pylori test.
    I recently learned about Dr. Jonathan Aviv who uses TNE and also has an acid-lowering diet. I just ordered his latest book "The Acid Watcher Diet". I watched all the videos I could find of him on TH-cam and learned a lot and found potential answers for several of my family members whose symptoms range from chronic cough to regurgitation and basic heartburn. Their doctors have no answers. I'm looking forward to trying a change in food to see what that brings.
    I would definitely get a second opinion and look for a doctor who does TNE.
    Hang in there and go with your gut feeling (no pun intended) to guide you in your search for answers.

    • @LauraElizabeth
      @LauraElizabeth  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment. I have tried restricting foods from assuming I had lactose intolerance to celiac disease, however blood tests have shown these have both come up negative so I am currently having to just try and avoid whichever foods I learn set me off the worst, however I have found there is no clear pattern to these foods at all.
      I have had a H.pylori test done back before I was referred for my endoscopy which came up negative, and currently I am waiting 2 months to be seen my a gastroenterologist. It's really hard to try and figure out what I think I have, but at the moment it seems to be similar to symptoms of gastropareisis which I think is something I will mention when I see this doctor.
      I will definitely look into that one, again thank you x

    Man I've basically been confined to the house for 2+ years now and I've put off the scope for ages because of fear of sedation and I couldn't find a doctor to do it unsedated here in America. I finally found a doctor who will do it awake and now I'm nervous as hell but more so for the results. So scared it's gonna be something that'll kill me and just scared of getting answers for better or for worse because it's such a huge change. Also scared I won't be able to complete it awake. I hope your situation gets better though. Not knowing what's wrong really sucks.

    • @LauraElizabeth
      @LauraElizabeth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry you're scared, it can be a scary thing but try to think of the results helping you move forward - as I've said in the video, it only does last a few minutes so although unpleasant it is tolerable and manageable - the nurses should also help re-assure you about the situation :) I commend your bravery to finally face your fears and get the procedure done - I'm sure the results won't be as bad as your brain is making you feel, but whatever happens at least you can have solace in knowing what the issue is instead of your brain being able to overthink all the 'what if's' you could have.
      Thank you for your support, it does really suck but hopefully the gastroenterologist will be able to figure it out a bit more in a month's time. I wish you all the best with your situation too, good luck and let me know how it goes :)

      @JPepperL 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok so I just got home a little while ago and wanted to let anyone reading this know how it went. I'm starving because I had the colonoscopy prep as well and that meant fasting all day yesterday and drinking the nasty bowel prep and spending ages on the toilet. Anyway, I slept about an hour and a half and got to the hospital at about 7 AM. I went and dry heaved from nerves in the bathroom for a good 5 minutes and then went back and the nurses put an IV in and got all my information etc. 3 different nurses asked about anesthesia and they were shocked and trying to tell me I was confused when I told them I was having none (apparently less than one percent of these are done un-sedated in America). Anyway, they wheeled me back to the room and sprayed my throat and put this ball gag looking thing in with a hole in it and that made me gag and I thought I'd never get through it. He then inserted the scope and it was really hard to swallow and felt kind like when you swallow a piece of food that's too big and it burns a little. But it is quick and it is manageable and you can breathe just fine. I won't say too much about the one on the other end other than it's really crampy and he could only get about halfway done before the pain was too much. BUT everything came back normal so I'm just as confused as when I started lol.

    • @LauraElizabeth
      @LauraElizabeth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      See, I knew you'd be ok doing it, it's just nerves going into it which I think makes it worse. It sucks in one way it came back normal, but on the other hand it's re-assuring it's nothing massively serious. (Please don't take that as a negative thing, I know I did at one point anyway.) My best advice for you is to do what I did and go back to your doctors, stressing how much your symptoms are upsetting you and see what can be done from there. All the best x

Heres the big thing.. you need to start juicing celery every morning for two weeks! Stop spending your money on gastro meds and invest in a juicer!! Those meds will make you worse in the long run honey!! Get on a good probiotic and take that daily. After eating a bland diet for a week slowly incorporate other foods back into your diet. So bland diet, celery juice every morning on an empty stomach and a good probiotic daily! See how you feel in a month. I think you will feel better. You also have to be sure you are managing stress. Hi Laura.
    Have you had manometry done through your nose to measure Ph levels?
    Worth asking about if this might help find the issue.
    Straight forward acid reflux though is not really treatable AFAIK except through a change of diet perhaps. It simply has to be managed.
    Ive had endo with and without sedation and in all honesty without sedation was fine for me.....the team are 100% correct about focussing purely on breathing while they look around inside.....focus focus focus think of anything else other than an endoscope in your throat.....for next time try it and remember everyone there is there to help you. The mind plays tricks and its easy to get scared.
    Ive had a swallowing problem for 40 years and had every instrument known to man put down my throat and still they couldnt find the cause of my problems so theres no guarantees of finding a cause. You have to carry on though and rule out as much as possible.
    Good luck.

    I had one last month without sedation but two times the throat spray. I was really nervous and kinda panicked the first time they put the spray in the back of my throat but the second time I barely felt it because my throat was already kinda numb. When the tube went in I didn't gag at all. It felt uncomfortable for sure and when it was almost in my stomach I felt it moving and especially when they pulled it back out I felt it. If you don't have a gag easily (like not at the dentist or something) and you have the throat spray the full dose they recommend then I guess you're fine. But it is really mental I think, because when I noticed I didn't gag I was way more relaxed and could focus on my breathing

Everyone is super nice and literally when they start they tell you to take a couple of deep breaths and your literally sleeping by the 4th breath and wake up and its done before you even know it. Just relax dont get scared it'll be fine.

I only used the numbing spray like you also but I think if I was to have to have it done again I would go for sedation too as it was so hard for my body just to allow the tube to be put down my throat! It's not natural, soon as that tube was taken out I just sobbed becausw I was in shock and it was embarrassing due to all the burping and gagging!

    Good luck my friend. I do CAT scans I know PPL want a result so they have something concrete to work with but more often than not we don't find anything.

    I have the same problem as you. I don't remember what it feels like to be normal anymore. It's so hard to feel sick everyday.. feeling like you're going to throw up everyday. Have you tried ondanestron (zofran) it helps a lot with the nausea.

    • @LauraElizabeth
      @LauraElizabeth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so sorry to hear you're going through the same thing as I am :( It is a very big struggle, and one which is made worse by the fact that the people around you can't even begin to comprehend how feeling persistently sick would wear you down the way it does. I have a gastroenterologist appointment on this Monday coming so hopefully I will find an answer there, but after 6 months of this persistently it is really getting to me. It's hard to stay positive, it's just a performance to quite an extent at the moment :/
      I've never heard of Zofran before, currently I am taking Copermin IBS relief tablets as they seem to help with the stomach cramping and bloating I also experience. Is Zofran something that has to be prescribed by your gp?

    • @shailynbaza
      @shailynbaza 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Laura Masters I totally understand how you feel. It has affected my life.. I've missed so much work due to being sick everyday and it sucks. I have bills to pay but it's so hard to go to work feeling terrible. I just had a upper endoscopy this morning, this is my second time and again.. they say they saw gastritis with esophagitis but that's what they told me before and it's never been this bad. It got worse in April and ever since then it's been rough. I just want to figure out what it is. He told me today that if it worsens or doesn't get better, I need to do a gastric emptying study for gastroparesis. If you don't know what that is there are so many amazing videos on TH-cam about it. You may have that. And yes the zofran was prescribed by my GI doctor. It works for the nausea. For bloating and cramping I have hyosycomine.

    • @LauraElizabeth
      @LauraElizabeth  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have read up on gastropareisis and I have considered this is what I might have as well, for me it's between that and IBS at the moment anyway :/ I'll have to see what the specialist says Monday, but I wonder if that'll tie in at all. What I hate is the idea that it is chronic, but if I have it what can I do? :( I will look into these medicines further if my appointment Monday does not provide me with a plan moving forward - thank you so much for sharing your story and suggesting advice, I really appreciate this

    Hey, I also have an endoscopy on 27th this month.. it is really a very bad combination to be a med student have had clinical depression a year back, both of these suggest I have been overthinking and everything boils down everytime, even if I have a ruptured appendix to stress and anxiety. I hate it, being underdiagnosed and being told I have nothing when I've suffered so much because of so many things. Lost count of hospital admissions I've had in 2 years.
    Also mine will be without sedation like you. I hate sedation and general anesthesia because they always trigger depressive episodes and sometimes even suicid@l ones
    Edit : It's done. It was uncomfortable because of the throat pain and constricting feeling I had from the very beginning but not too bad. It only took like 3 mins maximum. They found out a lax LES and lots of pharyngitis because of the acid tricking back up in the throat. Not much of a gastric issue I guess. I hope I do not vomit too much today because I do feel strange

    Hey I live in USA. I have GERD and have had it for a long time. I take Omeprazole 20mg everyday. There are some generic drugs other than the one listed that might be right for you. I would ask the chemist/ Pharmacist if there are any other generic over the counter meds that could help. My GP prescribed it for me and it was cheaper to get it like that instead of over the counter. the directions on most of those kinds of meds say to take them for only a couple weeks. you would have to talk to your GP for specifics if you want to take it longer. I was never able to control the GERD until I got on a daily med. I was eating tums and other antacids like candy. I hope you can find some relief and return to your studies. Best Wishes!

Worse part was trying to swallow with the mouth guard in. For anyone nervous about this procedure, dont be, close your eyes and breathe and you will be fine.

    I’m doing this tomorrow.. I’m worried about it but I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to do it... I don’t like needles or memory loss so I have 0 interest in sedation.. in regards to your GERD... even though I’ve read up most places that esomeprazole is not really good for you in the long term, I’ve been taken it fairly consistently for about a year and the difference in my GERD is night and day.. might want to ask your GP about PPIs such as esomeprazole... I too have debilitating heart burn and acidic burps that have kept me up many nights and leave me wrenching in pain when I’m not using the medication properly.

    I have all of this. I even paid for a private doctor. He gave me antidepressants and told me there’s no point in testing me. I have seen the doctor 8 times. I can’t concentrate at college where my throat is swelling and burning. I have lost over 2 stone in weight. I have been to a nutritionist, a herbalist, I have taken ACV, PPIs, slippery elm, honey, I’ve modified my diet until I am literally eating vegetables and nothing else. Some days I eat nothing - the reflux is just as bad. And I am like you, where I only have water and the acid is still coming up. I am currently in bed, wheezing and struggling for breath. I am seeing another doctor in December and I am going to push for an Endoscopy. I know this was an old video but I was wondering how you are now? Also, have you considered surgery? The problem is, they put us on all these tablets but it’s not treating the root cause of the problem, which is a valve above the stomach not closing. I utterly and totally feel your frustration. I am going through it too. I spend my days too unwell to do most things. I can’t even walk without gasping for air. I hope we can find a solution. I’m going to push and push until I find an answer. I sincerely hope you are better now.

    Have you had a gastric emptying test? ❤️❤️❤️ I'm so sorry this is happening, soon I am having endoscopy but I don't want sedation and they're making it difficult to get without. You're very brave okay??? ❤️❤️❤️

    • @LauraElizabeth
      @LauraElizabeth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't had one, no - the next step forward is to see a gastroenterologist in about a month and a half's time :/ Can I ask, is it that you're afraid of the sedative? Thank you so much for your lovely comment

    • @astridmj327
      @astridmj327 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would totally look up gastroparesis, that might be something to explore. Also yes the risks aren't worth my horrible background with meds. I have C-PTSD and it's worth more to sit through a few minutes of being uncomfortable

    • @LauraElizabeth
      @LauraElizabeth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have come across gastropareisis whilst researching previously, and I do think this is something I could have. I went to the doctors a while back complaining of feeling like food was rotting inside my stomach one night, and I was put on Domperidone for a month which did help with my digestion issues, so this is definitely something I need to mention to the gastroenterologist.
      Thank you sweet, it really is horrible to have to wait so long but it's either get it free on the NHS, or pay a ridiculous amount of money to get seen sooner - at the end of the day I don't get a choice in it :/

    • @astridmj327
      @astridmj327 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds like it's something you could have yeah :( I have it I am 99% sure but I have to do the endoscopy to rule out other things first. Also you're obviously such an amazing person, I wish there was a way I could help bc I know how much this is causing you to suffer :( I mean I don't know but I assume and ah anyway if you need anyone to talk to or anything I'm here and stuff :)

    Ive had reflux since i was 7. I remember the first time it happened, it scared me to death. Im now almost 32 and it has become normal to me. I can be stood up straight, and i will still have my stomach contents coming up into my throat. Im so used to it now that its just mild a inconvenience. Eating too much triggers it, and also eating too little triggers it. You literally cant win with it. I eat all the foods i shouldnt but lifes too short to live on lettuce and ice cubes which lets be honest, is pretty much the only thing that wont make it worse. Its a horrible condition. Im suprised I've never been sent for an endoscopy, but i think its going to happen in the near future. Im also petrified of gagging and vomiting too. My husband had his without sedation and he said it wasnt even that bad 😳 Im being sedated if i ever have to have one 😭 I take Lansoprazole for my reflux and when taken regularly, it works. Have you ever been prescribed anything like this? You shouldn't have to be buying Gaviscon and other Indigestion remedies like that, they're so bloody expensive and the OTC ones are never strong enough. Definitely mention Lansoprazole if you havent tried it already, its a game changer. Hugs to you ❤

    I have a endo on Monday, and I am so scared. I have a fear of sedation, but now I am afraid of doing it unsedated. I have been dealing with stomach issues for a year now. I understand your pain. I have found that not eatting out at all, no wheat, oats...carbs in general, no sugar, no chocolate, and no dairy has helped. You might try Mastic Gum. You can order on amazon. Healed my husband's reflux and ulcer. I have issues with medications so it is hard to use them.

    • @LauraElizabeth
      @LauraElizabeth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for this suggestion sweet, I wish you luck with your endoscopy. Each experience differs and this was just mine - personally I would now go for the sedation, however without sedation is something that is definitely tolerable, just not pleasant. Let me know how it goes ok? The nurses will go with you and reassure you throughout the whole thing, you aren't alone in this.

    • @SH-lx7kj
      @SH-lx7kj 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The nurse told me has done it both ways. Most people opt for the sedation. She said he did one on his own wife though without it and it went fine. Here is to hoping. I go back and forth between thinking this is an ulcer or h pylori flair up to thinking I have cancer. You really should consider the Mastic gum by jarrow. Google it. It has helped a ton of people with your symptoms. It helped me in the past. I just have multiple chemical sensitivity now.

    • @LauraElizabeth
      @LauraElizabeth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm sure you don't have cancer sweet, just deep breaths and focus on relaxing. Our brain likes to make us worry we're really ill but I'm sure it's nothing as bad as cancer, good luck for it x

      I am the same stacie. I am terrified of having sedation and scared to have it without. I never used to be scared to have sedation but I have developed this irrational fear that I will die under sedation, well it isnt totally irrational as people do die. But my fear is out of this world. Now I am scared to have it without. I think I might cancel the procedure and hope for the best, I think the dr suspects something like cancer as he is worried about such rapid weight loss. Damned if I do damned if I dont.

    • @LauraElizabeth
      @LauraElizabeth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Fran, from reading your message I 100% think it's worth getting the endoscopy done. I completely understand your fears, but the amount of people that die under sedation is miniscule, and typically they already have a health problem or are elderly which contributed to this fact. If you are scared, I really do suggest sedation as without sedation is a process which is more uncomfortable and you know more about what is happening around you, so if it scares you I would not suggest this option. The nurses around you are there to help you and will support you the whole way through, and if your doctor fears a problem, a 5 minute test and a tough day is worth it over the regret of not catching it earlier, right?
      All the best xx

    Sounds like a hiatal hernia causing gerd. Good luck. I have a hernia but my acid reflux symptoms are thankfully mild. Instead my stomach feels like it is pushing pressure on my diaphragm making it a struggle to breath. It sucks big time... 7 months so far.

    I had the same procedure, I’ve been under the Gastroenterologist team for about 3 years! They diagnosed me with a Hiatus Hernia, which is where the Stomach is pushed through the surface of the diaphragm, I’ve been put on a Permanent Medication 😔

    Thank you for this video. So sorry you are going through this. I am 30 years old and I have difficulty swallowing. I think I might have GERD. I am having an Endoscopy procedure Monday and I am completely terrified. I think you have Acid Reflux too. I really wish they would find a cure for this because this is so debilitating. I hardly eat and drink because of my difficulty swallowing. I have lost lots of weight. I just want this pain to be over. It is really hard when your family don't understand and think that this is all in your head and they don't understand how serious Acid Reflux can get. Stay strong.

      You welcome! Just want you to know I understand your pain even if others don't. I will try to be strong too. If it helps I changed my diet a little to try to reverse this. I am a vegan now. I don't eat dairy or drink milk from a cow. I drink soy milk but the unsweetened kind. I have no sugar at all. I am on a plant based diet for 70 days before my full submission to being a vegan. Maybe you can try this. I have had a few better results from this. :)
