With more documents in the archives still to be reviewed, it seems apparent that more secrets will be revealed. Looking forward to future discoveries about Chateau de Purnon and the people who lived there.
Totally agree that even rooms that serve a functional operation should be finished well. The archives are just an incredible treasure and loved (although sad) learning a bit of the story behind the son of the Marquis. Merci et a bientot!

Oh my the story of the son was so sad. I absolutely love the wallpaper in that room. ❤️ Your so lucky to have found the layout and plans of the Château. What a treasure box of documents 😱

We were fascinated to find out about this also. We are always excited to make new discoveries about the history of the chateau and those who lived here.
Happy New Year from the utterly destroyed town which in New Year 2022 was Lismore. So keen to see Purnon emerge from its own ruins like a phoenix from the ashes. 🇦🇺
I really love the old plans which is like winning a lottery to find them. So very intriguing as it makes you envision the original owners making decisions on how the chateau should look. It's so great that the rooms were set up with side rooms which you can now utilize for modern needs. It must feel great to see each space brighten and come to life as you work in them. You were brave to get in the little room with spiders and all the grime. I would want it to be a fresh space as well, so I get the reasoning to get it done.

We are so very fortunate that the archives have been so well protected by each generation and that their contents are now able to be revealed and assist us with the restoration. Wishing you a wonderful year ahead
I love your quote "you may not notice the world that has been done but you'd certainly notice the work that hasn't been done". It's not all making pretty, but making it last. Well done
Love that you’re not afraid of spiders, I move them outside too, everyone else here it’s end of life for them. Congratulations on the invaluable historical plans, extraordinary! And the HWS room completion. 🇦🇺

Thank you so much. Yes as Australian's we are used to much more threatening spiders!
Yeah, the little subconscious details do matter. That one room could cloud the overall impression of the home so giving it a "quick" cleanup and refinish did make a big difference. Can't wait to see it down even just a few numbers. Every room done is a full step forward, even when it doesn't seem like it.
Congratulations on the new room and congratulations on having the roofers there to work! I know that when the roof is finished you will have peace of mind. I am always so happy to get to see Chateau coming together! Best of luck in the New Year, from Nashville, Tennessee, happy new year!

Thanks for your message. We're thrilled you're following our journey and we'd love to welcome you to Chateau de Purnon during one of our Open Days.
That is an interesting project. Your right - do even the smallest parts right and do it nice. Even if it is a utility room or a closet. When I look at such project I think of electricity and plumbing and how to not damage walls, ceilings and floors. Since you can't do everything at once I was wondering if new electric wires, water lines and waste lines are going to be done in stages. I would imagine you will work top to bottom but still have some ground floor rooms finished first. Nothing is worse than dragging construction waste through finished area and damaging finished work.
As a French man, I must say that this Australian couple is amazing and wonderful ! They probably bought one of the most beautiful châteaux in France. Purnon is a splendour. And they are so passionate ! They know so well the building. They are truly great. I really hope they will be happy in France 🙂 Happy New Year from Paris !

Thank you so much for your well wishes and wishing you a wonderful year ahead.
Well done. Glad that’s done and you can move on to the pretty projects. Look forward to all your vlogs. The history lesson of that bedroom was so interesting.
The wallpaper is really fantastic! It is made to look like the silk fabrics that was made in Lyon at that time. At our château we have silk fabric of the same kind made by Tassinari et Chatel. They made the fabrics for Versailles and other royal castles in the 18th century.
The blue wallpaper in the bedroom is just exquisite. You are so lucky to have it. Thanks so much for sharing the history with us. Can't wait to see more.
I so love to follow the restoration processes of these old Chateau's in France! I have added your Chateau videos to my list. It's so enjoyable to see these places being revived through the determination and very hard work of their new owners!
Amazing those people who ventured themselves into bringing treasures back to life. Commitment and passion, definetly, make the magic happen. Congratulation from Brazil on your contribution to the History.
Happy New Year! This may be a small room in size but it is a very important room that needs doing. This is a good start to the New Year and am so happy and excited for the both of you!! I like your work ethic...do things right from the start, it is so worth it. The rooms looks amazing all ready for the hot water system and one step closer to the end goal. It is so exciting about all of the floor layouts on how you are going to use each room. What a blessing that you were able to find and have all of the old documents at your disposal. That was a true Blessing!! I am excited to see what you both do in 2023 and really enjoy all of the DIY. Blessings to you from Canada and Happy New Year!

Il faut avouer que, de tous les châteaux à restaurer que l'on voit sur les chaînes TH-cam, Felicity et Tim ont acheté le plus extraordinaire de tous. Purnon est une véritable splendeur.
As you began cleaning the room, I was thinking "lyme wash" then you finally mix the lyme wash and I'm happy dancing (or would be if I weren't down with flu). So glad for historic restoration!
I've been wondering how feasible it is to create geothermal heating for these châteaux. I do know that it's very difficult for a typical home on a constricted lot and with not a lot of space to heat (although I think it should be considered in newer properties for sure) to justify the installation costs. However the fact that châteaux are large buildings, on large pieces of land, generally with easily accessible basement or sub-level floors / cellars, it makes sense. It's not actually that big of an investment in that regard. It's also clean energy that would pay itself off quickly and is then free for... presumably forever. In some cases they suggest using an auger system to drill down close to the building, but my understanding is that it would be pretty "simple" to create a setup that utilizes the excavation of something you might already be planning for. Or could make a case for, as Purnon is listed. A fountain or reflection pool or such even. You only need to do the one system that could then eventually heat and provide electricity for pretty much everything on the grounds if situated properly. Anyway, it's possibly worth looking into. Just remember that a lot of what you find online is looking at urban applications on a rather small scale, so it's likely better to discuss with a company used to doing larger installations. No idea how far along they are that way in France either. I'm in Canada and it's reasonably well known here. But being first isn't a bad idea... if you found the right company you could make a case for being the showcase for their systems and be sponsored. Then ALL the châteaux would be doing it 😊
@@ocanadastandinguard6840 except that built correctly it produces electricity. I'm not suggesting tapping into a geothermal plant, I'm suggesting building a self-sustaining independent system. The issue with geothermal energy as it's currently understood is the same as EVs or hydrocell fuel. You CAN take the power source from something already created, essentially just transferring the burden to a different source, and many companies use the cheapest/easiest source. So for example, while hydrocell tech burns 100% clean, if you use something like methane as your jumping off point then it's not clean OR as efficient. However if you take the extra step to use captured waste as fuel or a similar technique, it is an absolutely clean and renewable energy source. Just because it's not yet common doesn't mean it's not a good idea. With all the promises France has made regarding sustainability over the past five years, I'd be surprised if there wasn't an opportunity to find some sort of grant structure to support it as a larger scale project.
@Nicky L yes, same concept although in the case of the château I'm thinking in a fairly large scale so I'm not sure how easy it is to access. You CAN buy a GSHP fairly easily for home use, but the scale needed for a château of this size would be more like a commercial installation I think. Which actually per square foot works out to be quite a bit less expensive than a home one for a normal sized home.
I wish you could post weekly. I'm going crazy everyday checking your page if there's a new video. Thank you for doing this! I'm itching to see results.

French spiders should not provide any Australien with any challenges; not after learning what horrors your Australien spiders can be. Best wishes in your endeavours.
Great choice to smarten it up first, as we all know, once the equipment is in there, it would never every be finished. It'd be too hard to remove everything for a paint job. Another one down.
Felicity & Tim, it's a real joy to watch your videos and learn about the incredible history of Chateau de Purnon as its stories are revealed. Best wishes for the year ahead. R&M
Happy New Year from Adelaide, Australia. THe wallpaper in the bedroom is beautiful and it looks in amazing condition despite it's age. How grand this room will be once it's complete. I look forward to following your progress this year.

Happy New Year and we look forward to you following the journey
Dear Felicity and Tim, Happy New Year. I must say that, among all the châteaux to restore on TH-cam, you bought the most amazing - and challenging - one. Congratulations. Purnon is a splendour. But a lot of work awaits you… Well, obviously, you know it. So all my bests for this. Your passion about this place deserves respect. I do hope you will get some public financing. Once again, congratulations !
I have seen on some other chateau restoration TH-cam pages that they were actually sponsored with portable generators that they were able to use to run entire systems off of which did include portable heaters so maybe just for the interim it's something that you can use that can be carried from room to room as you're working just to keep yourself warmer and healthier in the long run.
@ you are so welcome! Check out the channel The Pethricks. Billy is currently revitalizing a convent and I would say around Halloween time maybe a little earlier he introduced that he was being sponsored with a particular portable generator that he's used for multiple things including powering as a backup his whole security system. I wish you every success and look forward to following your journey! Stay warm!
I'd call them "mains voltage power banks". They're basically big batteries with inverters that let you use mains voltage tools without access to mains electricity. These things are flooding the market right now (my local DIY store has an entire shelf dedicated to them) and there's an incredible amount of advertising. I'm not sure how heavy these units are but personally I think I'd prefer extension leads over one of these if I was in a building with access to mains electricity.
I just looked up the product again and it is called EcoFlow. They just sent Billy an additional battery backup system that he wanted to test out if it would charge his vehicle as his vehicle is an electric vehicle and it does work it may take some extra time but it will get him from if he broke down in the middle of nowhere because he had no more power available it will at least get him to the next point and that wasn't even using the entire battery backup but it still took about 45 minutes to gain 4%. However the point is that they sent him that to test for free so with that being mentioned maybe with you having a renovation channel with a good amount of people watching and cheering you on and enjoying the content maybe they could assist you as well. I hope to see them mentioned in the next video, because then we will all know that you are warm and being taken care of and able to get your amazing work accomplished all at the same time. I wish you every success!
Happy new year 🎊 🎉🥳🎆What a treasure to find the original plans for the chateau ❤ amazing history of just that room. wishing you a prosperous and happy new year 😍😘

thank you so much and wishing you a wonderful 2023
Courage! Save us. The Salut is not in the in the French People! It is outside, in you. However it looks like if French People (from the Vermont) is delighted to learn about the history of the Château!!
I love seeing progress on the chateau. If you are not using a primer with mold inhibitors, I suggest that you do. I want it to stay lovely even when it gets moist. Perhaps lime wash inhibits mold? I was wondering what you would end up doing for heat in the chateau. Looking forward to hearing how you solve the issue. Maybe it will end up being multiple solutions in different areas. Seems so complicated to me.
Happy New year oh I how.i could gift wrap some heat and dryness of to you in the post. Having spent a very early spring then the summer in a stone building without any heating. I can attest to the bitter cold it will be like. If the room has a fireplace in it will you be able to have it cleaned and cleared for lighting later on. What will be the source of heat? Hydronic heating? Best wishes for 2023 so looking forward to what will come. Cheers from Melbourne.😊👩💼

Thanks for your best wishes and wishing you a wonderful year ahead also. We are starting to press some of the fireplaces back into service gradually as their chimneys are restored however in terms of the final solution to heat the chateau we are still assessing this.
So massive! Are the out buildings being counted in the total number of rooms? The little room was well worth the effort. It would be a pain to have to go into a yucky, gross room every time you needed to check the water/heat lol. I can't wait to see what comes next.
What is the lime wash product you used? The finish turned out nicely.
6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2
It's a simple lime wash that we created with lime and water. As the surface was stone we couldn't simply paint it directly as the moisture level in the stone would cause the paint to crack over time.
Do you have plans to insulate the walls or interior rooms of the Chateau?
ปีที่แล้ว
The voids behind the wallpaper panel were actually designed to provide insulation to the room. We are not going to place further insulation behind the panels due to the fire hazard.
Where did you find the archives with original floor plans? Was it in the attic somewhere that was discovered when they were working on the roof? I'd love more info about what documents you found and where/how. Thanks!

We actually post a daily story on Instagram and a weekly video on Patreon (I'll pop the links below) and would love you to join us there for more frequent content! We focus on posting here when we have something significant to share x

French spiders should not provide any Australien with any challenges; not after learning what horrors your Australien spiders can be. Best wishes in your endeavours.
So true and thanks for your best wishes!
Extraordinary
love what is happening there
So much history here!! Fantastic job!! X
hello fom cyprus, just finished watching all your videos.keep up all the great work you are both doing.
thank you very much and thanks for joining the journey
Great choice to smarten it up first, as we all know, once the equipment is in there, it would never every be finished. It'd be too hard to remove everything for a paint job. Another one down.
so very true!
I just found your site and I'm so glad I did!
Felicity hello you are very hard it's amazing Stay warm take a break

I often wonder how you managed to be in there alone when you did this video. I would imagine its frightening.
Happy New Year from Adelaide, Australia. THe wallpaper in the bedroom is beautiful and it looks in amazing condition despite it's age. How grand this room will be once it's complete. I look forward to following your progress this year.

Happy New Year from QLD, I’m impressed with everything you do.
Wishing you a wonderful 2023
Dear Felicity and Tim, Happy New Year. I must say that, among all the châteaux to restore on TH-cam, you bought the most amazing - and challenging - one. Congratulations. Purnon is a splendour. But a lot of work awaits you… Well, obviously, you know it. So all my bests for this. Your passion about this place deserves respect. I do hope you will get some public financing.
Once again, congratulations !
thank you very much
@ In the meantime, I saw other videos, and I understood that you were working with public institutions 🙂 Wonderful.
Have a good day !
I have seen on some other chateau restoration TH-cam pages that they were actually sponsored with portable generators that they were able to use to run entire systems off of which did include portable heaters so maybe just for the interim it's something that you can use that can be carried from room to room as you're working just to keep yourself warmer and healthier in the long run.
thank you we will look into this!
Esta es una verdadera restauración..
Happy new year 🎊 🎉🥳🎆What a treasure to find the original plans for the chateau ❤ amazing history of just that room. wishing you a prosperous and happy new year 😍😘
thank you so much and wishing you a wonderful 2023
!02 rooms to go BUT you now have a plan!
Very interesting, and rather charmingly presented!
Beautiful place!
thank you
Courage! Save us. The Salut is not in the in the French People! It is outside, in you. However it looks like if French People (from the Vermont) is delighted to learn about the history of the Château!!
thank you
Thank you for doing this 🙏✨️💜
Bravo.👍👏
Well done , Hard work decorating isn’t it ?
sure is!
I felt a little sad that you were on your own in the Chateau, just know that we viewers are thinking of you
That's so interesting about the bedroom. What will you do about the wallpaper? Will it have to be totally removed?
the panels which were removed will be repaired and reinstated once the roof work is completed
I love the wallpaper in the bedroom. Are you able to preserve it? Or do you have to replace it with something similar, but new?
this is an original 18th century wallpaper that will be preserved
So massive! Are the out buildings being counted in the total number of rooms? The little room was well worth the effort. It would be a pain to have to go into a yucky, gross room every time you needed to check the water/heat lol. I can't wait to see what comes next.
After a few more of the 102 rooms you'll be an expert plasterer and painter. Remember: the devil is in the prep work!
^SO cool! I'm new, but what do u plan to do with the Chateau? Make it in a hotel?
What is the lime wash product you used? The finish turned out nicely.
It's a simple lime wash that we created with lime and water. As the surface was stone we couldn't simply paint it directly as the moisture level in the stone would cause the paint to crack over time.
I feel like I saw this house on an urbex channel, before the restoration.
Do you have plans to insulate the walls or interior rooms of the Chateau?
The voids behind the wallpaper panel were actually designed to provide insulation to the room. We are not going to place further insulation behind the panels due to the fire hazard.
👌👏
Im guessing the interiors are protected too to some extent, wont it be insanely expensive to try to replicate the original wallpapers?
The interior of the chateau is classified also however the original wallpapers will be protected.
Where did you find the archives with original floor plans? Was it in the attic somewhere that was discovered when they were working on the roof? I'd love more info about what documents you found and where/how. Thanks!
we look forward to sharing more information about the archives with you in the future!
I'd remove the door until I'm done just to make it easier to work. ;)
Are these rooms being insulated… use space heaters maybe powered by battery or that solar charger… do you have heated socks or jacket
🤎🤎
How can I get some tile coasters?
They can be ordered via our website. Here is the link:
chateaupurnon.com/product/slate-drink-coasters/
My card was denied for some reason.
Got them ordered thank you so much
The archival documents are an incredible rich resource to have. Is there a separate process to digitise the finds?
Yes they are currently being digitalised by the departement
How cold is it ?
it was so cold that the water in the buckets collecting the water in the roof all froze!
