  • An excerpt from Neil's book 'Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization.' Should we live forever? What happens to us after we die? What is the statistical probability of being alive? Tyson exercises mathematical prowess and scientific eloquence to grapple with questions that have plagued humankind since its humble beginnings. Taking a cosmic perspective on civilization not only helps us understand where we are but shows us the path forward.

hey Niel, I just wanted to ask, why is it impossible to reach 0 kelvin? bc we would need an infinite amount of "other cold" to do so? haha well, ive thought of an even better idea, so HOW ABOUT we just build a box that can support 15psi, then use a powerful vacuum to suck all the air out, if theirs nothing in the box, then theirs nothing to really be effected by the temprature, theirs nothing to VIBRATE AT ALL so would that not mean infinite cold? This is always my goto tactic when dealing with unreasonable theists who simply can't accept that yes... Just like Everything Else...We Die!
Another one I used is... If you did live forever... Surely you'd get bored after the first few 1000 years or so... That one always stumps them!
Honestly, as Neil put it, this notion of living 'forever' isn't really about that at all. But simply about the fear of Death itself. Even though this is a Natural process which will simply 'return' us to a state of non-existence, prior to our conception.

Anyone who reads this, I'm glad you're alive. And I am glad to have joined you all in experiencing reality as we know it.
Edit: I am doing much better. I think I have a very positive outlook on things now. I hope you guys are all doing well. Thanks for everything you guys said, I appreciate it. Have a wonderful life, everyone.
Edit 2: I am genuinely happy. I'm keeping positive, staying busy, and having a blast with life right now. Thank you guys for all the nice comments, and even to the people giving their religious takes on the matter. I still stand by what I said, I'm glad you guys are alive and it's a great privelege to share in this human experience with everyone.

@@blackpebble1911 Because the idea of a creator is too fantastical and has no hard evidence to back it up. And the existence of a creator would just open more questions. Where did they come from? Did another creator come in a make them too, since they'd likely also have to be pretty complicated. How do they work? How did they make anything in the first place? Did they have to learn anything? Why are they here? I doubt that discovering their existence would even answer these questions.

One day I complained to my grandmother (born in the 1880s) how scared I am of ghosts. She looked at me strangely and then said: " do you know how many people have ever lived? I do not fear death because I died for 22 minutes 40 years ago. I had just gone through a very dangerous back surgery. They had just turned me over. I saw the heart monitor flatline. Then I felt myself rise from body. I stood there watching my doctors and then I was gone. I did not see anything- but I felt harmony for the first time in my life. I was told it wasn’t my time yet. I could stay if I wanted too. If I wanted to return I needed to think of someone I loved- I thought of my children- then I opened my eyes and the heart monitor began to register. My doctors were crying and speaking Hebrew. They told me I had been dead for 22 minutes. Since my horrible soon to be ex- husband had a DNR my doctors had just prayed over me. I learned a valuable lesson that day. Never take a moment for granted and never underestimate the power of life. Do not fear death. Love life and explore everything you can to become the best you can be. I am 70 now. Life is precious and is meant to be loved and explored. We are so much more than we can imagine.

Not just as adults but with our children in a way we're it's isn't this frightening thing but as a motivation to live free and less hesitant as none of us truly know what is to happen once this body fulfills its earthly duties. Once we become more comfortable with the inevitable you'll make more decisions with that awareness in mind and the objective you have for your life while here (idk if they'll be right or wrong).

      Allah (God) says,
"Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion."
      (Qur'an 3: 185)
"And it is Allah (God) who sends the winds, and they stir the clouds, and We drive them to a dead land and give life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Thus is the resurrection."
      (Qur'an 35: 9)
"Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?"
"Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips."
      (Qur'an 75: 3-4)
"So observe the effects of the mercy of Allah (God) how He gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed, that [same one] will give life to the dead, and He is over all things competent."

I love this. As i’m getting older I’m more and more seeing life as precious and unique, but also more and more impatient with those who take it for granted and are caught up in their petty problems. Of course, I have my own problems as well like everybody else but I try to never give more importance to them then to the idea that the life I lead is precious, uneventful as it might be. I get to work, I get to draw, I get to listen to music, I get to travel, I get to read, I get to play games, I get to collect action figures, I get to eat great food, I get to know love, I get to know great people…. and that makes me feel like a very lucky man, not just compared to others that might have it worse, but just on a grander scale too, as in: I get to be here. I wish more people felt happy and lucky about everything they get, instead of wasting their lives on being angry over what they don’t have.

If I was 3 years younger today I’d probably ignore you
Thinking life is just an easy way for everyone to get enjoyment off of torturing you and then giving you pleasures that they use for their amusement when they take it all away
That life is a way for you to feel torture and that death even if it leads to non existence is better
Now I am horrified that I thought that way and the fact that I could’ve died believing that
I could’ve died not drawing, not writing, not seeing, not feeling and not experiencing anything I’ve chivied at this point
In the future I hope I’ll think again “oh my god, if I died back then I wouldn’t have made this many things and I’d only be remembered as a child with no reason to die but jumping off the building anyway”

His message fills me with a sense of dread and caution at the fragility and astronomical odds of being born into this life, after billions of years of non-existence. Yet he also fills me with hope and a sense of action to make the most of my circumstances and to make every day in this life count.

I have found life is a series of struggles. Sprinkled with so many moments of joy. And when I collect those moments well I deeply enjoy this life. I do not and will spend one more moment of this life worrying about some past life or some future life. I live and enjoy every moment I can. I have many autoimmune illnesses which I treat with natural herbs. Despite challenges I find so many moments of joy. And I have witnessed many deaths both animal and human in my 65 years. And that body or being just stops with that last breath. My personal concept is that strings remain, our knowledge that we shared well that lingers at least for a while. Knowledge never shared is just lost. I believe love and laughter that we shared those memories with, may last many years. In our family we still talks about uncle Charle’s shenanigans, and he was gone long before my husband was born. Hubby is in his 70’s now. I hope I leave good strings that bring a smile when pulled long after I am gone.

A wonder beyond words. An amazement beyond the horizon. This life is a gift that I intend to try to make the most of. Please my daughter, if you ever read this, make life all it can be. Learn all you can learn. Do not ever believe without evidence. Do not take life for granted. Do not harm others for your benefit. Do not be the bad in this world. Be the good. Be the educator. Be the light, in the inevitable darkness. I must now go read Carl Sagan speak of the pale blue dot….

Neil deGrasse Tyson you have taken over the leading role of Mr. Sagan so well over the years. To be able to put such awe in the eyes of only a high school educated individual is beyond talent. It is godlike. Thank you. Thank you. The minuscule understanding I have of the wonders of the universe and the wonders of life, I owe solely to you and Mr. Sagan. Not only did he have, but you also have the ability to speak to mere mortals like me. That ability to enlighten us with the knowledge that only a very few can possess. That ability to present in such a way, that anyone with any interest can feel as if they are the world renowned astrophysicist of the day. Thank you.
