      I think those arguments are actually pretty much true though. The life you lose will make it easier for your opponents to kill you. It's powerful enough that it just about warrants you becoming the archenemy. It's also not as explosive as Necropotence and won't win you the game the turn after you cast it.

      I think it was more nuanced than that. Necropotence draws all the aggro but you get all the benefit immediately. Phyrexian Arena does it slowly but doesn't draw aggro. The one ring draws aggro before it's actually become as good as Necropotence or the like which is why they say it's a build a round

  • @canoli62

    I think a better comparison for this card than Rhystic is Necropotence. This card is basically slow Necro. If you've ever played someone that plays Necro wrong, and only uses it for 3 or 4 cards a turn, this is similar to that. It has the defense benefit over necro, but the slowness makes it much less scary. I do think after the first turn cycle (drawing 3 total), THEN you become a threat that needs to die. Any opponent drawing 4+ cards a turn is a must kill.

    It seems the crew's main argument against the card is that it draws too much ire but do most players build their decks with the goal of sandbagging their way into a win? It is true that the player who seems inauspicious for most of the game ends up winning very often, but that just doesn't seem like a condition you can really build around. That player is usually behind because of their draws or mana screw, not because they only play spirited companions/dousing daggers along with a couple great cards that they hope to draw to close out the game.

  • @jyomi7506
    @jyomi7506 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Also, it's worth mentioning that it deals no damage the first turn, so it's kind of draw 3 for 1 life, then it starts adding up. If you bounce it the second turn you have it, you basically didn't lose anything. Even if you don't, it's 1 card for 0 life, 3 for 1, 6 for 3, 10 for 6... I might be greedy as hell, but if my commander or the 99 has any amount of protection or life gain, I'd probably run myself into the ground with this and now I really need some Thoughtvessels XD

  • @bradleykyonizuka2558
    @bradleykyonizuka2558 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think the whole drawing aggro and being arch enemy is a bit of an overstatement. A lot of the time in commander the arch enemy just wins. Because even with 3 opponents they can't find removal, or someone doesn't have enough lands and can't even play anything meanwhile you are drawing so many cards and they're still drawing 1 per turn and you're just too far ahead. Plus even when it's obvious you can't trust a table to accurately determine there even is an arch enemy. With the one ring someone might look at it and say I don't even have to deal with them they're going to die to their own ring and then ignore you. Or see the other two opponents going after you and decide hey I can pretend I don't have anything because those two got it I'll just sit back and let those 3 kill each other and then untap and win but because they didn't dedicate resources the arch enemy gets the 1 extra turn that allows them to win.

    Where the One Ring is really sick is where you can do something to untap it to draw with it twice between damage taking events. Play it and draw then take one next turn so it's faster than Arena. However let's say that the second turn you can tap it for two then untap it and draw for three you've now gained five cards but when the damage comes around again you only take three damage the second time so you're pulling more cards than damage. You don't want this on the board and not getting used but if you can use it multiple times a turn you quickly get way ahead.

    Hot take, I'll play this over rhystic study. Draws less hate, less triggers to annoy people, responsible tables pay the tax so you won't draw anyway while still being the enemy. You also don't have to play this on turn 3, empty your hand, build your board, and then play this.

    So t1 draw a card
    T2 -1 l and draw 3 total
    T3 -3 and draw 6 total
    T4- -6 and draw 10
    T5 -10l and draw 15
    Now turns in this are from when you cast the ring So there is some variants that this shifts up or down and I think realistically you're probably going to get to keep it for around 3 to 4 turns in most casual games that end around turns 9 10 and 11.
    I generally think this card is worth it as a staple card draw engine because while it will kill you it will have drawn you six to 10 cards before it starts killing you And hopefully within those 6 to 10 cards you find a way to sacrifice it or remove it

    38:35 This is a very interesting point, what color needs this card? Blue has a lot of support for it, but at the same time doesn't really need it, Black has necropotence and PLENTY of ways to tutor for necropotence so it also doesn't need it, Green can contest the board well, but at the same time it has blue levels of card draw at this point and doesn't support artifacts well, it might be too slow for most Red decks, but it seems like it could work otherwise, but the best option seems to be mono White, can contest the board well, has plenty of lifegain and very limited options for card draw compared to the other colors.

  • @jacob3521

    The logic of "this card is so good and powerful that its bad bc it draws aggro" is never sound, that's strictly an argument for the card being amazing. Also for the "this will kill you" crowd, people play sylvan library and happily pay 8 life to draw 2 each turn. also every single card richard listed as "white's better card draw" was invariably bad, he should have mentioned things like white's new card draw gimmick (battle angels of tyr, smuggler's share, archivist of ohgma) and even then the list is like 5 or so cards, could very much use the one ring.

Idk if he forgot how painful playing mono red is or what but those exile effects are not even close to a replacement for real carddraw. Plus like 4 commanders actually care about the exile thing, wayyyy more commanders in red care about getting stuff to the yard, which is much easier to do from hand as opposed to exile. Great podcast overall an entertaining listen

    I'll be running this in my affinity deck that runs clock of omens and unwinding clock. my turn draw 1, untap on each players' turn drawing 2, 3, 4 and the another 5 on my turn, 15 cards total and only cost me 5 life? draw into Liberator which I flash in to then flash in clock of omens and draw literally my whole deck?
    I mean I know the whole point they're making is if you DO build around it it's strong, but I don't quite think you need to build around THIS card, so much as you put it in any deck that cares about artifacts more than other permanents, or any deck that wants to be actively untapping its permanents, or any deck that is capable of copying abilities.
    TL;DR - I agree with Richard in so much as it's a card that is good enough that you don't necessarily need to build around it, but you DO want to warp your deck a little to accommodate/abuse it.

    Rhystic study has a unique quality that lets you prey upon the responsibilities of the other players. It's not your fault you're drawing the card, it's the other players' fault for not paying the one. There are so many subtle layers to Rhystic that people don't really understand.

    The Lord of the Rings creds discussion between these guys may be one of my favorite moments in the entirety of this podcast, but for reals though I am glad that Crim at least mentions The Silmarillion. It is easily Tolkien's best work IMO and really shows you how small of a conflict The Lord of the Rings was in the grand scheme of things.

    • @DrangusKahn
      @DrangusKahn ปีที่แล้ว

      Silmarillion is more like a history book than a novel- it’s awesome, but Return Of The King is absolutely epic of a book. I agree though that the Silmarillion would make a better book, but it’s very academic and doesn’t read like a novel-sometimes trying to read it gives me a stroke..Tolkien is dense enough because he was an Oxford Professor and all.

    The One Ring is going to be absolutely nuts in my Zacama deck. It has lots of ways to gain life accidently along with Zacama's life gain trigger which I rarely use. However the 1 ring will now allow me to use my life as a resource outside of Sylvan Library + it fixes the biggest problem with Naya which is having empty hands after having unholy amounts of mana

    • @turnup1186
      @turnup1186 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      with zacama probably dno tribal how can you have carddraw problems in green? rishkars expertise, return of the wildspeaker, lifes legacy, mmentous fall, garruks uprising, elemtal bond, greater good, toski, hunters insight etc. there are soooo many good carddraw spells in naya for both archtypes going wide or big.
      If you are having carddraw problems in a big creature deck with green in it, something is wrong about your deck building

      @@turnup1186
      Dino tribal Zacama is horrible lol. Dinosaurs offer nothing to what Zacama wants to do as a commander.
      Zacama is a big mana deck that tries to generate as much mana as possible to abuse his triggers for control. And ultimately you want to combo by abusing his cast-ETB and win with something like Purphorus, Shivan Gorge, or Brash Taunter. Other builds I have experimented with Mycosynth Lattice for a win-con
      The typical green card draw spells in a good Zacama deck aren't useful because Zacama is the only creature that's tall. Meaning those cards for the most part are dead unless Zacama is on the field. The only 1 worth running is Rishkar's Expertise and that's because you have the potential to play gamebreaking cards like Mirari's Wake, Panharmonicon, or Elesh Norn for free
      Basically you just mentioned "good cards", not cards that actually synergize.

    • @turnup1186
      @turnup1186 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ammonaustin9081 i dont know your zacama build but even if you play big mana there are commune with lava kind of speels to have cardadvantage.
      and you also mention naya has problems with carddraw.. for the typical naya deck go wide or go tall card draw is easy.
      And how does the one ring synergizes with zacama other than it gives you cardadvantage and you can gain life
      would you call every deck that has some form of lifegain synergizes with the one ring?

    I wanna test this in my Voltron deck because the protection lets me swing in once without worrying about getting slammed by the crackback, and when I untap with it next turn, I've drawn three cards so far (once when I cast it, and again when I tap it a second time) and have fully untapped mana. If I stick around past that, the value is nutsy.

    The one ring you tap and untap it a million times then bounce it to your hand rinse and repeat. Remember protection last till your next turn only when you cast it stays til next Turn even when the ring leaves. It pretty much a repeatable tefferri protection. You have to counter this otherwise expect the caster to abuse it.

    I am 100% with Tomer on this card. It's the best colourless draw effect, but most colours don't need it necessarily and you should include some way to mitigate the life loss on this effect if it sticks around for a while. Considering it has good card advantage over time, protects you for a turn when it comes in, gains extra synergy from other archetypes through its tap ability and counter usage, and has indestructible to make sure it sticks around for a while, makes it a very good card in my opinion. But, it isn't an auto include due to the ultimate price you pay of 1 life for each card it gives you; some decks don't have enough incidental life gain to mitigate that one downside over time, while other decks don't have any synergy with this and may already have better card advantage solutions. Overall, though, I'd give it an A+; very good card by itself, but not quite clean enough to be an auto include.

    I think if we start seeing this a lot we'll see green start playing more Deglamer and Unravel the Aether. They are 1G shuffle target artifact or enchantment into owner's library.
    I know that Dana Roach from EDHREC loves these cards over Nature's Claim and I've been agreeing lately. Lots of indestructible stuff that's just nice to shuffle away.

  • @Scub

    Maybe this makes Hijack finally playable. Steal the ring when it has already some burden counters, untap, draw a lot of cards and add another burden counter just to hand it back to its owner at end of turn.
    Beside this: I really like the flavour of this card (huge LotR fanboi here). Don‘t see it as an auto-include but definitely strong in the right deck! Might add it to my Edgar deck (lifegain + sac for artifacts available + worst case solutions like despark).

    I think this suffers from the Beledross problem. Everyone was EXTREMELY scared of that card, the big dragon where you pay 10 life to untap all your lands once a turn! It was going to break the format!! But then, lo and behold, paying a quarter of your life is a hell of a price! I suspect this will be the same. It's very good, and the card draw from it is good, but paying that much life will add up quickly! You are not immune to getting attacked, especially with battles coming out and encouraging people to play even more aggressively.
