The Consew CSM Motor w/ controller can be found on Amazon HERE:
www.amazon.com/dp/B016EJ1WB6/?
Other options maybe much cheaper include Morphon brand...sorry no link atm.
In between the DIY method with your pulley upgrade and the rikon vs already built out the box sander what would you choose because the price seems to be similar one just requires me to do a little thinking 🤣
@@soullessone_edc6226 ditto. I was just about to order the rikon and I'm wondering if it does the job as a knife sharpener.
@@simpleforging3339 In past videos I saw it being used. I like this myself as more versatile and uses less immediate space. meaning can move display. HFT 1x30 still is at around $60+/-. do the upgrades might be slightly more but I'd think is well worth it. Now to get some OT at work to buy this stuff.
@@soullessone_edc6226 Apologies for not catching the question above sooner. They are both functional options, just with a different list of +/-. If you want the hassle free but bulkier route the Rikon out of box is still good.
The custom motor replacement, gives digital speed control, reverse, etc.
Do you have a link for the drive wheel and idlers? I found the kit on the web site and have already built 2 of these sharpeners and love them
So my old HF 1x30 has a new life in my sharpening shop what a game changer this upgrade is simply awesome. I use it mostly for stropping with leather and Diamond Sprays, but I can also use Scotch Brite Belts now and the control with the speed control is one of the best DIY upgrades I have ever done and the wheel kit from Cliff is fantastic! Probably going to add another one soon to my shop.
So very happy to hear you did it!
@@CurryCustomCutlery yes sir Mr. Cliff, thank you for all you do!
Cliff I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. You made it bonehead simple and I feel confident to give this a try in the future. Thanks again!
Good Im glad. Watching it back I felt like I was making something that should be simple almost sound WAY harder then it is. Drill it, mount it, attach wheel. Enjoy ;)
@@CurryCustomCutlery some of us need thing broken down that much.
I have a hf 1x30 that I have made many knives with in the stock configuration. It is now pretty much worn out. I will be doing this upgrade if I can find that motor and controller. I was going to mount the drive wheel to pillow blocks and use step pulleys to slow the belt speed down, but this is an attractive option. The economy of the 1x30 belts cannot be beat imo which makes spending money on mods make sense. Thank you for this video.
My friend and I converted (3) HF 1"x30" belt sanders to variable speed using Treadmill motors and cheap potentiometer SCR dimmers connected with full wave rectification ac to dc. They work great!
Received your drive wheel completed my upgrade to the harbor freight 1/ 30 came out amazing. Thank you. Your videos help.
This video was worth watching just for the V.S Consew motor link - that unit has endless possibilities. People who do metal fab will be disregarding the old "arm" - it just looks like junk. A new steel mount/arm will be getting made in a lot of peoples heads.. I.E you only need the Consew motor with a drive wheel & a suitable idler - not the original sander. The original sander is kinda irrelevant.. Really good, informative video.
agree 100% the consew motor is a mini beast that will twist your arm off literally at slow rpm. Unstoppable.
So - you probably have a good reason - but - if you have $50 dollar tool - why remove all the parts and except for the frame, and replace everything that comes 2 1/2 to 3 times more for parts than you spent gor the complete tool?
Why not just buy a better machine from the start?... and that's all I got to ask about that.
Now I'm going to get back to watching the rest of your video. : )
If there was an easier solution I would have been all over it.
Still to this day there is not a more affordable method to make a machine this versatile...Horizontal, vertical, edge leading or trailing, reversable and digital speed control with high torque for just around $200
Did you do this same mod for the silver 1x30 that you use for stropping or does it already come with a variable sped control?
Great video and thanks for sharing with all the sharpening enthusiasts out there!
Curious if you have to use that arm to control speed? Does the actual control module have buttons to increase/decrease speed and on/off switch?
Want to do this upgrade! Found motor on Amazon...when will your Deluxe Wheel upgrade kit be back in stock?
Looks like this little machine isn’t for sale anymore. What machine replaces this one in your line up?
Lolol ! I bought wheels from you last year and modified my HF grinder with the exact same sewing machine motor and speed control! It's a great little sharpener but stalls easily if attempting to grind knives like the big grinders do. But, it is my go to for sharpening. I use trizac 600 and 1000 grit with water spray, one heck of a nice combo for serious sharpening! I upgraded to homebuilt Revolution 2x72 grinder but will always use the HF for sharpening, it's just to easy and a nice setup! Thanks for sharing, your a very kind and generous man!
Nice Michael I remember! Congratulations and you are 100% correct ofcourse. the motor is very torquey for what it is but not for stock removal knife making/grinding big n heavy. Sounds like you got a good 2" beast now for that. Gratz!
i grind knives with the harbor freight motor and works great so this one should be way better u cant push real hard thats why it stall on you
Cliff, I just did this mod with the same motor and your wheel set and it's nice and quiet but the belts fit too tight. Not sure why as I mounted the motor dead center to the factory hole in the frame.
Look for a short format video I did on scotchbrite belts not fitting...same stuff applies. Its the swing arm not giving you enough play, easy fix.
lol, never mind I see someone has added it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
toolcker on Amazon one by 30 inch what are they 400 bucks Canadian. Then get a hold of Cliff for his upgrade wheels and Bob’s your uncle. By the way that unit I just mentioned is a variable speed separate unit that comes inclusive.
Awesome video, thanks for the great content. I'll be ordering some wheels from you tonight and the motor from Amazon. Thanks again and keep up the great videos 👍
I want to make it a Sunday sharpening show...something for like Horse Power TV used to be. Mustie1 got me thinking how much I look forward to his stuff on Sun, watching him tear stuff apart. :)
Wheel kit ordered
Hi Cliff, thank for this video. I plan to upgrade my Harbor Freight 1x30 following this your video. I’m having problems locating the new motor on amazon. Could you please send me the link?
Have you got a link to where you can pick up that variable speed motor exchange for the Harbour Frieght?
I have a variable speed knob controller and have it on my sander. I think is identical but is grizzly brand. It looks like a small audio amplifier bare finned aluminum and top all Finn's for heat dissipating but doesn't ever get very hot. Never had any issues. Amazon $12.
please provide a link to this speed controller. Thank you.
Sources of the motor and wheels would be nice
Im trying to buy the consew motor that you provided on one of your replies below . looking at the pictures of the machine on amazon (from the link)and the one you used on the video looks different esp on the control box the buttons are different.
there are several variations that have slightly different looking boxes. Dont get too hung up if its not identical
Use a bar of soap on grinders when bringing aluminum. Use a 2" grinder and smooth grind those nubs off.
Flat washers and blue loctite
I am very interested in doing exactly what you have done.
Could you possibly send me the necessary info/links to do so?
Cannot find the first video you referred to.
Thanks.
In addtion you can also just buy a Rikon 50-161 with speed control but no reverse...
Great video! When do you think the wheels will be back in stock? Thanks
Fully restocked and the new drive wheel has a bit more crown to it!
Hey Cliff, are you going to try out HF new 1x30?
Is there a link for the drive wheel or the size specs that i can look up?
I have a question, that blue Rikon unit you have & use in other videos is $155 on Amazon. It is variable speed. Wouldn't it be cheaper & easier to just buy one of those? Would they need upgrading? Thanks
Out of box the 50-161 will get you there. I use mine everyday. The Full mod version has higher torque, wider speed range, more compact form factor, REVERSE, digital speed control, etc.
I suggest just to buy out of box to many people not inclined mechanically.
@@CurryCustomCutlery thanks much!!
Did you have to reverse the motor direction to clockwise . If so, how?
I picked up the Consew motor and have a bunch of your stuff on order - waiting on the drive wheel. The motor seems to work great, but I need to add some friction to the speed control arm to get it to stay in place. It moves under its own weight and gets worse with the vibration of the machine. Any tips? Thanks!!
I emailed you back to address that issue. The speed control arm attaches to a small rotating shaft and it needs to be attached with more friction to the body. Remove and add a spacer washer or some way to get it to press against something.
help me understand why I couldn’t just source out maybe a little more expensive variable speed one by 30. To go through all that work Brother I guess I know man there’s a lot of guys out there that would do all that. I just wouldn’t do that with a $30 Harbour Frieght
Back in my day....seriously when I started there was no variable or slow speed option, so I designed and had the parts created to build my own then shared that with others.
Now there are out of box options but there still are not Digital speed controlled with Forward/Reverse so there is something for everyone. Cheers
Hi Cliff, thanks for the video. Currently there are 3/4 hp and a 1 hp motor systems available on Amazon. Is there a need for the larger motor?
go with the 500w is more then enough
But instead of all the extra. Im going to get a 2x72 digital variable speed one. I don't do much sharpening with one anyway. More hand tool restoration and cleaning up corners on stuff.
Great video Cliff, thanks for sharing the process! Will your custom drive wheels fit the standard motor arbor, and if not, are there any potential inserts or adapters available? Just a series of silly questions as I think of all of the things that I could do with those wheel upgrades to the stock drive system alone. Be well.
Is this consew motor a "plug and play" type device or would one need to upgrade standard household wiring?
It works off of standard plug in no prob
Nice video and mod. I have the HF belt disc combo. Half thinking I might remove disc and couple VS motor to existing motor's shaft, leaving existing motor unpowered of course. This machine really needs to be VS from the get go, whatever the added cost. I am sanding some plastic parts that will melt at stock speed...
HI Cliff, bought the HF 1 x 30 on sale, bought all the upgrade parts, Consew CSM motor and controller from your link and the upgraded drive pulleys from you, they have not arrived, due in a couple days. Got the new motor installed, no problems. The only problem I'm having right now is when I removed the spring from the speed controller lever theres not enough tension to keep the lever in a set position, it just slips right down to the off position right away? Did you do anything to yours to make it stay in a "ON" position you move it to?
Hey Cliff, thanks for directing me to a few resources. I'll seek you out when on Maui.
I’m pretty savvy, but I would do all that. Just my opinion man sorry to say.
Alot of these options are 2nd level upgrades to an existing frame/platform that is cheap but very functional.
@customcurrycutlery what is the make and model of the DC motor you used thank you for your time harleybayo
I have heard that DC motors like this one, because they are open, are susceptible to death due to the ingress of dust/debris. Has anybody found this to be true? Is anybody using a method to prevent this? Perhaps a filter?
I appreciate you making this video and for the information I have been struggling with trying to use my 1x30 to mod and make knives and I have a 6-year-old son with a terminal illness so upgrading my existing sander is a much better so solution than trying to save up for the next few years to get a better one thank you so much
Out of box option is the Rikon VS 50-161. Retail right at $200 variable speed.
Very sorry to hear about your son... deepest sympathies to you and your family.
Hey I'm wanting to just build my second belt sander but instead of 2X72 hopefully the 1x30 are cheaper to operate as I'm going with it.
I'm great with the welds and only need information about motor and your choices for the reverse a veritable speed and reverse. I will ask for bearing and wheels information.
I'm finding rebuild of my harbor freight junk after I do all of the improvements that junky motor will probably not to be trusted after all my improvements.
be a fun project to just create one from scratch.
So that was the End Game. First to give people an Upgrade path that was doable, then to follow with a custom built frame to add the same parts to...
And I did grind away some of where the spring was because you're right the belts won't go on if you don't do that that's a pretty poor design but for 50 bucks what do you expect the only trouble is my spring is possibly different than the one on yours because if I grind away where the spring is I still have a tough time squeezing The Idler in the back far enough in to get a belt on and off because the spring bottoms out I almost feel like there's too much spring there and it's too tight but I don't want to go messing with that
Just got in a new shipment of softer springs that really make it easier to use, I will be adding those here in the next few days to the website and new video coming on that!
question- is there a way to get a 'low speed' motor for knife making instead of variable speed? do they make such an animal?
Hi what speed controller would you recommend for 1x30 wen belt sander
Very useful video - I'll have to give this a try. Do you think this same set-up (the various parts you have added) will work on the Wen 1x30?
Really all we are reusing is the frame and swing arm so will work just fine. You may need to plan to use the motor bracket that comes with the Consew or plan to screw the WEN frame down hard to a flat board.
@@CurryCustomCutlery Thank you for your quick response.
Seems best just make your own 1 x 30 inches and keep the $ 90 for the Chinese knock off
Is this upgrade worth it if you are making knives on a 1 by 30
You know what I did I flipped the back idler stock one and now seems like tracking works better and idler is not too close to the spring. Just need to finish truing wheels. Got another 1 by 30 in clearance now.
Where do you get the screws that hold the motor to the frame? My motor didn't come with any. And, any idea when the drive wheels will be in? I've got everything ready to do the mod. Just waiting for the wheels. Thanks.
Help, I can't get the motor to run clockwise need help.
Thank you saw the end of the video I jumped the gun
Do you have a parts list I'm interested in building from scratch and just saleing my slightly used
Running this video and got the information thankful you're helping me and I'm building my own love your upgrades and I hope to adding a small diameter wheel to upgrade it another step up.
I'm going check out the wheels upgrades also.
Thanks
Hey Cliff thanks for the great tips on modifying the Harbor Freight 1/30 I wasn't having much luck with the Sandpaper trick on the main Drive wheel so I actually took one of my skew chisels from my turning tools and I rested it on the front bottom part of the housing then held it steady and shaved away the high spots that were making it so out of round that you can see the other idler belt Wheels vibrating now everything turns nice and smooth
You sound like my people. My earliest modification video back 7yrs or so thats exactly what I showed doing.
Now I worry more about giving "advice" that could hurt someone not as skilled or lucky
I missed where to get the new motor and vfd
www.amazon.com/dp/B016EJ1WB6/?
Cliff, thank you for your hard work. Tell me, when choosing this engine model, what power should I choose?
Since they are DC stepper motors you dont need more then the 1/2hp. It will twist you hand off just fine!
I have the HF 1x30 amd I picked up a used Delta 1x42. Wbat do you think about soing this with the Delta?
anything is possible with the right experience and ability.
Very nice! Just a question what happened to that psi motor? That probably would work better. I have mine running ok after replacing all wheels that I ordered off.
this would have been old news 3yrs ago if Penn hadnt stopped making the affordable 1/2hp version. I still have $1000 worth of adapter plates I had made up to make it a no drill process.
@@CurryCustomCutlery I looked up that one and it’s more affordable.
Cliff, on my HF 1 x 30, as soon as I put any pressure on the belt using the platen I get terrible bouncing or chattering (not sure the correct term). I watched your videos and no matter how well I adjust the platen it doesn't get any better. Don't know if its the wheels, the platen or maybe the cheap belts I'm using. Pulling my hair out, any advice would be truly appreciated. Thanks.
Its the belts 99% of the time that have a thick lap joint. Usually cheaper belts. The cubitron and trizact belts we sell dont have this problem. ;)
What belts do I use? Grit ? Brand? How many different grits do I need, just for my personal kitchen/hunting knives.
I would check out my sharpening in a 1 minute video or the satin polished machete video also has three basic step progression
Great video as usual. I live in the UK, where getting a 1 x 30 was difficult enough and spares would be even more difficult and tax and shipping from the US is now too expensive.
I have been thinking about trying some pallet truck (I think you call them pump truck) wheels to build a grinder (possibly 2"). The larger guide wheels as a drive wheel and the rollers as idler wheels. You can even get crowned wheels. I really can't afford to waste the money trying it as an experiment, so I thought I'd ask your opinion as you have developed some expertise in these matters.
Thanks
We do ship to the UK. Typical medium sized box runs about $35 to send
The speed controller looks as if it’s backwards. Does it mount upwards or down? The numbers would be facing up.
Its original design is to be suspended under a table. it practice you dont look at it, Just set it to your maximum speed you want and then use the lever to adjust up to that
Why change it out ? Whats wrong with the way change?
I need to do this. My drive wheel is oblonged. I trued it the best I could, but it's still wonky.
I have an ooooold video where I first trued my drive wheel while on the machine
Does that motor controller provide option for reverse operation CW/CCW (edge-trailing to edge-leading belt direction) ?
Yes it does, and full programmable digital speed control with high torque
Can i use the upgraded wheel with the old motor?
Cliff, does that Consew motor come with the mounting screws to attach it to the Harbor Freight frame?
It did.
At this rate just make a separate frame for the new motor
baby steps
@@CurryCustomCutlery
I say new frame because its mainly a 50cm-100cm long 5cm wide and 0.6cm- 1.5cm thick slab of mild steel
And this is a hell lot more heavy and if you attach the wheels and everything else right it will be a hell lot more rigid
But a new motor over a new frame is probably a bit better
the new wheel is not turning true
I'm experiencing the same thing with the main drive wheel. Did you figure out a solution?
Will that motor run a 2x42 grinder?
Well it's 2 months after this video came out and all the wheels are gone on the site hopefully more will be available soon. I went ahead and ordered some belts while I wait. Great little video the information is perfectly presented. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing more and hopefully being able to grab some of those upgraded wheels. A rivers experience did a video in regards to a platen upgrade for these machines that everyone should take a look at as well. You could have yourself a sweet little machine with all the different upgrades people have figured out.
More drive wheels are on the way...will be a hot minute but there are coming.
@@CurryCustomCutlery awesome I can't wait. Thank you! You guys are awesome 👍👍
Where’s the video from ‘rivers experience’ about the upgraded platen?
@@vinnym5095 you'll have to look back through his videos from a year or two ago
@vinnym5095 look up rivers experience 1x30 tips and tricks looks like it came out 4 years ago
I wonder if it's possible to make the original motor reversible?
If it was many people would have done it many many years ago.
What are the threads on the new motor?
Unsure as the the exact pitch thread count if thats what you are asking. Im sure its metric and it comes with a bolt, washer, and lock washer typically that fit the 15mm shaft.
@@theIndoCurrys Thanks
Usually 6mm…or M6…
Hi Cliff, or anyone who has done this modification... Did your motor come with the 4 holes drilled and threaded? mine came with indentations that I guess I could use self-tapping screws in... Just wanted to know what others have done as I'm not the most creative person :)
Every motor I've seen comes with holes threaded and screws so it can be mounted to whatever you wanted mounted to
@@CurryCustomCutlery That’s what I thought, but this motor was without holes and screws. I took off the front housing and it is designed to have the 4 screws- I’ll drill and tap it. It’s what I get for going cheap ($89)
@@robertburkey5789 Which motor did you pick up for $89?!?
Do I need a gear puller to get the original wheel off the new sewing machine motor?
That pulley wheel? No, I used a socket (for a socket wrench) on a Makita driver and the bolt came off the threaded spindle. The pulley wheel came off very easily after that.
Saw the drive wheels on your site are out of stock. Are you getting those back in stock anytime soon?
They shouldn't have ran out of stock let me update the inventory right now
Another great video. Thank you for the content.
Where to get the drive wheel please.
does this motor have way more power then the harbor freight motor? cause i grind and remove steel pretty well with it.
ALOT more power...
@@CurryCustomCutlery awesome and I just bought a wheel from you the front top one and work great will buy the other one next week.
how many rpms does it do?
Is the platen absolutely necessary to operate the sander?
platten is needed if you want to use an angle guide to clip it too.
For edge trailing horizontal mode Id say not mandatory to have the platten but nice still to have there.
Excellent!
When are you gonna have more upgraded pulley kits in stock?
3-4 weeks....shipment of next order has been delayed at factory but coming soon.
Is this machine you are working on a Delta or Harbor Freight?
Technically I think this is a Central Machinery version from Amazon.
Very helpful video! Can you provide a link to the motor please?
It was the consew csm 1000 but prices have went up. Some have used the Morphon version. They all have a 15mm shaft then will work.
You have the drive kit back in stock? Says sold out?
New shipment is almost here...standing by
Love this. Awesome!
Thank you
Awesome! I have been waiting and wanting for a great step by step upgrade video for the HF 1x30!
Hey Jason, good to see you! Drive wheels and idlers are almost back in stock. On the way....cheers!
@@CurryCustomCutlery Awesome! As soon as I get some spare cash, that will be my first upgrade.
have you tried a ac motor speed control ?
over 8yrs ago now...if it was easy it would have been done a long long time ago. AC controllers drop the power and will burn out the motor
this is so cool!!!
Thx man
Green marker on green paint! 😁 Worked I guess. I can see the dots.
