Diamond wheels are now available on our website!!! High quality 200 grit in 3 sizes: shop.currycustomcutlery.com/collections/sharpening-accessories/products/1-2-inch-radius-diamond-serration-wheel
I'm learning what my shop wish list is here. Serrated edges are kind of an abomination when it comes to sharpening. I once gound the serrations off a badly dulled blade and converted it to conventional edge on a kitchen knife.
Thank you for your time and efforts to put out this video. I see you performing many processes where your able to maintain angle by hand. I see that as a talent / developed skill not all of us have. I wonder if the manufactures of the guided angle sharpening systems have diamond rods that click in just like the flat diamond / stones for rookies like me can maintain a constant repeated angle.
This is fantastic. I always put off the serrated knives until the bitter end. With they dremil they come out ok or should I say a low C. I'll be spending any extra change on the sewing machine motor and the wheel. Really looking forward to upping my game. Thanks for all your help!!
Gotta say, those Dremel diamond products are incredibly good quality. My oldest is the small diamond disc. Itś at least 15 years old and I don*t feel replacing it yet. Used it for absolutely everything, including spring steel.
Cliff, I wonder one could not use a diamond wheel if the serrations are smaller in size, Am I correct? Yes, one can do it manually, but I’d rather use something automated. Other than a belt splitter what would do the job with smaller serrations?
Just curious, what is the manufacture and specs on the Scotch bright wheel motor? Noticed it had two arbors, could you put a diamond wheel on one side and the Scotch bright on the other?
I've used stone files / slipstones. Since I'm used to sharpening saws, I concentrate on getting the leading edge (i.e. rearmost portion of the scallop) sharp. Certainly the results are better than the factory edge, but it this the right approach?
I hated serrations until, I got the spyderco tri angle, last one I did it was pretty bad, touched it up on the flat turned out amazing, thank you for sharing, don’t forget to watch the heat if anyone uses power tools
Can you put the cbn wheel on a rikon variable speed bench grinder and use slowest speed or does it have to be on a very slow speed sewing machine motor? What angle are the serrations?
Great tutorial. I was thinking that the wheels used for sharpening chain saws - not diamond - can be shaped to fit various serrations widths and depths.
Yes I am really impressed with your tutorial. One question though, what is the grit of the 6X1/2 inch diamond wheel and what insert do you use to accomodate this motor? Thank you!
The final edge stropping of a straight razor is its own master class. Ive worked in that area but dont feel qualified to say for sure. My gut would be final strop should be on hanging leather strop with CrO2 or THIERS ISSARD.
Its different it many ways. originally a few years ago I was set to show how with the PSI but they stopped making the affordable model motor. Now consew is getting expensive. Look to Morphon for $80
Man I hate serrated edges - primarily because of my lack of ability to maintain them. But you can't argue with how they bite... That blade looks gnarly, wouldn't want to tangle with that!
Cliff, thanks for the great info! I just ordered your HF Wheel Upgrade kit and some belts. Do you sell the scotchbright 6in grinding wheels? If not could you point me to a link? Thanks! You helped me get into sharpening with your videos 4 years ago. I love it! And now am planning to take it small scale commercial. 😊

Hi Cliff, wondering if you can provide some specs on the motor and controller you used for this tool. Motor HP rating, RPM, arbor size, AC or DC? Looks like a fun little build and will help a lot since i am sharpening my serrations by hand and deburring on a high grit polishing belt the same way you were showing on your leather strop.
Nice video, SOMETIMES I have to use different size chainsaw files for Steak knives as the "scallops" are usually very close together., Greetings from the Cayman Islands
The diamond wheels are available on our website shop.currycustomcutlery.com The motor is a DC sewing machine motor from Amazon. I have since then made new videos showing how to use an easy to get bucktool 1750 bench grinder for $85 and build a 2 wheel station. th-cam.com/video/_zs4e1IkYZg/w-d-xo.html
Impressive. Seeing you do it inspires me to get a couple of tools and learn some new techniques. Thanks The only thing I find a bit scary is having the sharp edge of the blade towards the belt. I destroyed a set of shears doing that.. Developing that 'touch' to prevent that can only be learned by experience. LOL, I don't want pieces of metal flying across the room ever again.
Well I’ll give it to you it’s very sharp but I hate the way it looks I prefer the original look I guess that’s why I won’t have anything but a straight blade
What a terrible harmony in your grinding methode! You can use an elastic rod beneath the grinding wheel to keep/hold the interval of the teeth! Normally it is not necessary to grind the whole 'valleys', beause only the peaks are dull. In most cases the 'shark'-teeth make you feel an unkomfortable Cut through bread!
Thank you for taking the time to tell me how bad I did. I see many commercial serrated knives that are in very bad shape so having advanced methods to deal with that is what I am trying to show.
Now to me that doesn’t sound like constructive feedback not at all. You know, sometimes in life we all have to be aware of our presentation and especially in text as it could have a much more of a subjective overly opinionated meaning. To me cliffs videos, as he even mentions himself, there are many ways to find serrated edge, and that the three he mentioned were ones that work for him or have in the past.
The best way to sharpen a serrated knife is to throw it in the garbage and spend 1/4 the time sharpening a straight edged knife. What's the point anyway? (pun not intended)

Grit?
@@davidorbeton He said 400 in the video, but that he wanted a 220.
Yeah 220 showing out of stock.
I'm learning what my shop wish list is here. Serrated edges are kind of an abomination when it comes to sharpening. I once gound the serrations off a badly dulled blade and converted it to conventional edge on a kitchen knife.
What are the specs on the scotch brite wheel? I just picked up a low speed grinder and ordered the diamond wheel.
That was one of the best lessons in serrated knife sharpening. Thank you.
I love that technique with the Dremel, I've always clamped my blade and freestyled the Dremel and struggled with consistency. Thanks Cliff!

there is a swing arm clamp that some have used with this and other setups that works good
Where can you purchase a diamond wheel or what do you look for? Love your videos also
Thank you for the video. I appreciate that you show different methods of sharpening including the budget method.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Hey Cliff, I’m going to ask if the 120 grit convex wheel from jade carver ok for serrations? They’re still out of 220grit.
Gotta say, those Dremel diamond products are incredibly good quality. My oldest is the small diamond disc. Itś at least 15 years old and I don*t feel replacing it yet. Used it for absolutely everything, including spring steel.
Thanks Cliff, your videos are always well presented…I’m like many who are just learning now to do this….
Cliff, I wonder one could not use a diamond wheel if the serrations are smaller in size, Am I correct?
Yes, one can do it manually, but I’d rather use something automated. Other than a belt splitter what would do the job with smaller serrations?
dremmel or a steak knife serration wheel for tiny serrations.
Stay away from the belt splitter concept it will round the points I think
Just curious, what is the manufacture and specs on the Scotch bright wheel motor? Noticed it had two arbors, could you put a diamond wheel on one side and the Scotch bright on the other?
Where can I buy that round sharpening wheel from?
Really interested in seeing you method for hawk bill knives!

Heat issues are very close to being addressed in an upcoming video. So much bad intel out there I hope to bring up(or down) to speed! Aloha
Thanks for the video. Just bought some belts from you. How about another vid showing how you sharpen serrated steak knives?
Another excellent video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for this video. Ace tutorial I learnt so much. 😊
Very welcome, happy to share what I know. Still learning as I go but when its good I think its worth sharing for sure!
Can you put the cbn wheel on a rikon variable speed bench grinder and use slowest speed or does it have to be on a very slow speed sewing machine motor? What angle are the serrations?
working on a new wheel with air slots that should dissipate heat enough that it can work with a slow speed bench grinder or even a Rikon.
Great tutorial. I was thinking that the wheels used for sharpening chain saws - not diamond - can be shaped to fit various serrations widths and depths.
some do this just fine....I think the diamond wheel will hold up a bit better.
Nice! I have the trend diamond rod. Just looking for a wheel. What side is recommended to sharpen serrations?
6" wheel 1/2' wide to do approx 1/4in serrations. Think twice as wide wheel as tip to tip
What adapter is needed for that wheel?
Yes I am really impressed with your tutorial. One question though, what is the grit of the 6X1/2 inch diamond wheel and what insert do you use to accomodate this motor? Thank you!
Gonna enjoy your weekly teaching's, learning alot.
Can you tell me where you bought the diamond wheel, or do you sell them?
best source I have is jadecarver.com look for a 6" 1/2" width in 100 or 200 grit. Im using 200 and its settled down almost too much
Awesome video! I learned so much
Excellent 👍
Hello, would that leather wheel work on straight razors?
The final edge stropping of a straight razor is its own master class. Ive worked in that area but dont feel qualified to say for sure. My gut would be final strop should be on hanging leather strop with CrO2 or THIERS ISSARD.

Love the vids Cliff! Thanks!
Cheers!
That burr removal.. it often takes more time than the grinding :-)
So true...a felt belt can really shine here also with the grabby fibers.
How were you able to have the motor raised up like that?
the motor comes with an adjustable mounting bracket
Hey Cliff, you think the worksharp Ken Onion would be good for serrations? What belt grit?
where do you buy the diamond wheels or do you sell them also? Max
Check the pinned comment above. Info should be there
Great info! Thanks so much! 👍🏻
My pleasure! We now have a full line of diamond wheels available to do this type of work at

Great video. Where in the world did you find that diamond wheel for the grinder? I need that in my shop.
I thought I linked jadecarver.com

Great to see you doing videos again! Very nice of you to share the way you do! Great content! Thank you!
Any additional hardware needed to mount the wheel to the motor?
I had to create a custom size spacer just took me a minute to sand it down.
Having trouble finding a spacer, could you possible post a picture or let me know where to find one? Thank You!

Steak knives I could see a serration drum being very useful
All I use are chain saw files it's very consistent.
Does it matter what side you go on?
But what is the machine? What motors and exact wheels are you using? No enough details.

The serration machine is safe and edge trailing. For some knives I go edge leading but only with the angle guide(see video).
