What a magnificent symphony. It's such a shame that they don't play this in the concert halls. Thanks for uploading this for us to enjoy.

Sinfonia meravigliosa di un compositore ingiustamente sottovalutato che sapeva usare l'orchestra come pochi e che scrisse cose mirabili come l'opera "Cristoforo Colombo".

This is so lush, tuneful, Romantic, and features great orchestral color too !!! That Larghetto is beautiful (has the "melodic immediacy" one associates with Puccini)! The Intermezzo is playful, delicate at times, always colorful !

    Lovely music.
The painting is called The Babylonian Marriage Market by Edwin Long. It hangs in the Picture Gallery of Royal Holloway College (which I attended in the 1970s, so all the paintings became very familiar to me). There's an article on Wikipedia about the painting.

I had fun recognizing the resemblance between several of the girls who were obviously modeled by the same person, a common practice in 19th century studio produced paintings.
The style is Orientalism, a late 19th - early 20th century imagination of historic scenes from an imagined east, which went along with Northern European assumptions about the superiority of the white race, used to justify white man's burden myths that gave credence to Northern European's assumed to colonize "inferior" non-white societies.
The music is competent and enjoyable, if academic and from a mold that styled a lot of late 19th century symphonic music.

A very good symphony. Not sure what it sounds like, certainly not Italian. But it's a piece that I'll be coming back to many times.

It's s rare gem of clear Wagnerian / Straussian influence. Being the sole symphonic job of an opera composer it's more than satisfactory as far as structure, orchestration and melodic generosity

When this symphony was composed, Franchetti wouldn't have heard anything by Strauss who was only 21 and hardly known outside of Germany.

This work dates from a time when Strauss himself was not yet the "straussian" composer we know. But Franchetti studied with Felix Draeseke, who was an admirer of Wagner.

The tempo of the 3rd movement Intermezzo is Vivace. I have no information on the trio, but I'm satisfied with that.

A finely crafted work unjustly neglected; it is to be hoped that this recording and upload will make it much less so. Thanks.

Franchetti had the rights to compose TOSCA ;Puccini acquired them and borrowed the opening theme of the Sacristan already composed by Franchetti...this was related to me by Franchetti's son in 1992 who was in his 90's...this happened after a performance by me in the tittle role of"Cristoforo Colombo " opera by this composer ,in Miami , Fla.

Justino, thanks for the great anecdote ! I knew Puccini drew a lot from Wagner, but did not know about more recent composers. Look forward to listening to your performance of Franchetti's opera (a composer I am now discovering) and many, many more of your work !!!!

Both this composer and Puccini are fine orchestrators. Puccini oriented his craft almost exclusively to opera in the Verismo style, breaking away from the family business , which had been to write music almost exclusively for the Catholic Church for the previous hundred years or so.

Sounds like a motion picture music suite rather than a symphony. Much melodious, much gorgeous, and less of constructability.
Same year and tonality as Brahms' 4th ? That's a little tragedy.....

A number of film composers of the sound era followed the styles of 19th century composers, like Wagner, Puccini and Rachmaninoff.

Intéressante symphonie. Bien menée. Pas très originale dans les effets orchestraux. Les thèmes sont plaisants mais pas inoubliables...
