    This is an excellent, detailed tutorial! I have been wanting to make these dresses for my 4-year-old granddaughter, but did not like the puckering/stretching I have seen in other tutorials. The tip to use fusible interfacing is genius! And there are so many more excellent tips. The camera-work was terrific, too. Thank you for sharing your skills with us. You are a beautiful lady with a beautiful heart, and I hope God always blesses you and your family.

    For people new to sewing, its important to note when attach the fusible interfacing, be sure the bumpy side is laid against the tshirt fabric.
    These were SO popular in the 80s. I remember a gal a work made them for everyone's little girls for a nominal amount.

And your tutorial is absolutely incredible! Thank you so much for the time that you give people like me. I have been making these dresses to be donated to Africa. You might think to use the cutoff end of the shirt to make side entry pockets on the skirt and a chest patch pocket for the shirt. Additionally, I cut off the hem of the shirt +1/4”, remove the coverstitching, cut in half, stitch right sides to gather, turn right side out and sew one to each end of a short piece of elastic to form a drawstring to be placed in a waistline casing.

    I had to laugh when I saw where your mat was warped because you ironed on it. I have done the same thing. I also used some heat on it and laid it down with weights on it. My mat isn't warpped now. I use a heavy towel to put on my mats along with my ironing mat to keep it from warping. I only do this if I'm only ironing very little and quick fabric on a project.

    Just a heads up if you make this dress and you have pins in all the places she mentioned, when gathering from side seam to side seam, try and keep those gathers between the side seams in each section. If you do what she did, pulling up the gather moving past the center front pin, she relieved some of the gather from the front, past the side seam which meant there was less gather on the side from the center front to the side seam on the right because she moved some of that gather to the back. You want the gather to be even in all 4 sections

    This is FABULOUS!! I have been crazy to make these for my granddaughters, but haven't been able to find a good tutorial. You are clear, giving an easy design and reminding me of things I've forgotten as a seamstress. It's been 25 years since I've sewn for my daughters and now I'm starting for my granddaughters!❤️❤️
    My daughter who lives near(we're all in Central Texas)has 5 kiddos, 2 of which are girls ages 8 and 5. My other daughter lives about 3 hours away near Houston and has a 5yo daughter, too. They are 9 days apart!
    I started back sewing just before the pandemic started but I started making quilts. So, now I want to get in there and start making dresses for the girls. It'll help my daughter out. PLUS the 8yo, whom I've been teaching to quilt, has been asking recently to learn how to make a skirt.😁 I might start her on a bag, though. She's pretty good at straight seams on the machine! She started learning how to sew on the machine at 7 and was a natural!!! We'll both have to get used to not always making 1/4" seams all the time like we have to do in quilting! 🤣🤣🤣 What tips or patterns or ideas do you have for me as I am teaching her?
    Thank you for this tutorial!! I've subscribed and am checking out some more!!

      Hi Rhonda! You are very welcome. How fun to sew for your granddaughters. I have much respect for all quilters. My best tip is to have her practice her new skills over and over until she has mastered them before moving on. Also, don't be afraid to makes mistakes. They are our best teachers. Happy Sewing!

      Just add a strip of fabric inside around the waistline to make an interior waistband. Leave sn opening and thread elastic through with a bodkin or large safety pin. Over lap the end and sew together. Stitch up the opening.

      You're very welcome. You're not gonna believe this, but I just recently did it AGAIN!!! But I caught myself and grabbed a bunch of heavy books, placed them on top of the mat and allowed them to sit for a couple of days. The mat is back to normal. Whew! I really can't believe I did that again.

    Anita, you are such a good instructor. Thank you. To gather a skirt/ruffle for the t-shirt, how much material do I add in addition to the t-shirt’s total measurement?

    • @AnitabyDesign
      @AnitabyDesign  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Vanda! It really depends on how much volume you want in your skirt. Start twice the measurement of your t-shirt and see if you like it. Reduce amount if too full, or add more if not enough. It's really trial and error.
