  • We review the new 2022 Genesis GV70, a completely fresh take on the entry-level SUV. This new approach moves past the German copy/paste cars of the past. We discuss the technical, and mechanical info that make this a great value. Others to consider are the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mercedes GLE, Lexus RX350, and Acura RDX.

      True, but that's exactly what most cars are used for. I like that Mark gets it. A vehicle like this is for commuting, putting on the miles on the freeway, and sure, doing the grocery shopping. It's not a weekend toy, so what matters is that it's comfortable, roomy, and feel a good inside.

    Jack hit it when he said that for the vast majority of us, the ability to cruise quietly and comfortably between 60 and 80 mph combined with immediate passing power, is what it's all about. In fact, as I have gotten older (matured? Nah!) I am far more reluctant to cross that broken yellow line on a two lane highway, and wander over into oncoming traffic to pass the vehicle in front of me. That sucker has to be driving a tractor, or going pretty damn slow before I'll even think about it. I am happy to say that I have finally reached the age where risking my life to save half a minute is no longer a thing.

      Infiniti is a joke and has been for about two decades now. Even the new QX60 doesn't cut it compared to the competition. Its limp standard 3.5L engine comes straight out of the Pathfinder with a "whole" 11 HP bump and a requirement to use premium fuel. That engine is weaker than the base 4-cylinder engines the competition offers, and a whole class or two below the 6-cylinder options the competition offers (unless we are talking about the similarly limp Acura MDX).

    As a former performance car nut, I test drove the X3 M40i, and this just killed it. Is the X3 faster? Yes, does it handle better around high speed corners? Yes. But the X3 is very harsh over bumps, and this is so much more luxurious and special, that the rest becomes irrelevant. In terms of pricing, this is significantly cheaper than both the SQ5 and the Mercedes GLC 43 AMG equivalently specced. It also has much better safety features. The X3 M40i is close price wise. I bought this in 3.5l Sports Prestige, and I haven’t looked back. It’s an awesome vehicle that I seriously doubt the Germans are not scared of.

    I was shopping for a new car a few months ago and narrowed it down to the Porsche Macan S or GV70. I looked at Mercedes and BMW, but everyone has one and there's no wow factor for me (and we already have a current gen Lexus NX, so we ruled that out). What you guys said in the video is totally true - if you're someone who's going to push the limits of the car and take it to a track, the Porsche is the better pick. But for a guy like me who uses a vehicle to commute to work, drive the family around, etc., the GV70 is amazing. It's got better luxury, better technology and of course better pricing. I've had the GV70 for 2 months now and I've gotten a dozen people come up to me in parking lots asking me about this car. Hey Mark, here's who this class of SUV is for. People like me who've owned fast cars in the past, who like fast sedans, but need more storage space for one reason or another. For me it's taking my mountain bike from state to state when I'm on my trips, I can't have it hanging on the rack getting pelted with rain and debris while also dragging down 10mpg during the entire ride. You could easily make up 100 reasons why people would want or need more storage in their vehicles. I've also done the whole weekend warrior cars, and at some point they end up sitting around not being driven because it starts to be a PITA taking care of two cars, etc. Also, why have a car that's ok to drive Monday - Friday and a separate car that's fun to drive on Saturday and Sunday? What's wrong with having a car with more storage that's ALWAYS fun when you want it to be? Or can store what I need in the back while not sacrificing luxury?
    That's who these cars are for, and trust me I'm coming from the side you're on where I NEVER wanted an SUV. But these small SUV's are a game changer for a LOT of people like me who want it all, and all the time. I want a car with luxury that also has some speed for fun, while I can also take my bike or whatever else on trips.

    The GV70 is pretty great, but the service of the brand can be terrible. The Santa Monica dealership is the worst experience I have ever had with any brand in the last 20 years. They NEVER call you back reliably (I have always had to call multiple times to even just get an appointment), they NEVER confirm you will get a loaner ahead of the time, and the service valet is wrongly advertised by Genesis: The Genesis website says something like 'pick up your car wherever', but the fine print from the dealer limits this. The dealer and Genesis North America have different overlapping maintenance schedules that make you call them to ask 'ok, another maintenance alarm, do I NOW have to come)?' and any complaints about the dealership, Genesis North America brushes off with 'those are all franchises, we can't do anything'. So yes, the car is nice, the interior is great, but if you ever need ANYTHING from the dealership or the company, you may be out of luck. I will sell mine before the warranty is up, I'm sick and tired of dealing with an incompetent team.

    Just bought a 3.5 fully loaded here in Australia. I've had wagons in the past for the cargo space and sportiness. The Genesis has all that in spades but the kicker is the ride quality and interior luxury. It's really very special and it's so great for everyday use. The 3.5 here in Australia is the only one with adaptive suspension which i really wanted after selling an Audi A4 Avant primarily due to the harder ride but also the lack of "special" about it. So far I'm massively impressed. And the 6 cylinder makes it really boogie. Way more than i really need but it puts s smile on my face everytime i give it some sauce.

    Just had a test drive today, GV70 was great but the dealership experience was 200% awful.
    Mine tester was a 3.5TT mid-trim. It was extraordinarily quiet with no wind noise and very little road noise, 19inch rims with smaller tires might help the quietness. And the ride was Okay, better than a current gen NX but worse than a Q5. Main complaint for ride quality was that lateral movement was not very well controlled and my body movement was more than I preferred.
    Dealership experience was absolutely awful. After the test-drive, I was left in a office with an IPAD, asking me to apply for Genesis Financial credit before any sells person talked to me. Kept waiting for 30min to finally see someone alive, told him I was not comfortable applying credit at the moment (before knowing the selling price). He seemed angry, ignoring me and staring with his monitor typing loudly. A minute later he 'offered' me a $5000 markup and asked me to leave if I could not make a purchase decision TODAY. What a experience!

    Good review as usual, gentlemen. I have only one complaint. That's the selection of the 3.5 twin turbo version of the GV70 rather than the base 2.5L four cylinder turbo engine for the review. I realize that the vehicles made available by automakers for review are often limited to top trims and the most powerful engines. And even if other choices are available to review there's an advantage in terms of the number of views by internet fan boys (the overwhelming majority of whom can't afford to purchase vehicles like the GV70) but the 2.5L engine that Hyundai, KIA, and Genesis are deploying in (at my last count) at least 9 separate vehicles is by all accounts an excellent powerplant and worth attention considering that a well equipped version has an MSRP including destination charges of about $50,000 compared to almost $59,000 for a comparable V6 version.
    If the base 2.5L engine were clearly an inferior powerplant that few consumers would want, it might be a different story. But judging by performance of 2.5L engine in the KIA Stinger GT-Line compared to the 3.3L V6 in the GT versions, the base engine in the GT-Line comes very close to the more expensive trims and the weight savings, especially over the front wheels, suggests it might even be superior in terms of handling. It would be interesting to see whether the same is true in the GV70. I realize that the same 4 banger in the K5 GT and Sonata N-Line introduces significant handling problems as a result to the absence of AWD (or even an LSD) in those vehicles but the GV70's AWD should, I assume, eliminate those issues.
    All in all, it's obvious that Genesis is presenting a "value" argument compared to its luxury rivals from Europe and Japan. It would be interesting to know whether V6 version of the GV70 is worth $9000 or more than a comparably equipped base engine version and just what a consumer is getting for those extra dollars.

      Agreed - I bought the 2.5T Prestige model and with 300 HP and 311 ft-lb torque, it is 85% of what the V6 provides but with much better gas mileage (unless you have the 21" wheels) and in Canada costs at least $12,000 less, making it the value sweet spot. Most I've seen are the 2.5T Advanced or Advanced Plus. It's a great vehicle and I look forward to my daily commute!

    Love the reviews. I think a lot of reviewers are missing something when they ask "who is going to buy this?" though. This vehicle (along with other Genesis models) will appeal to people who want a lot of bells and whistles to accompany the steep price they pay for their luxury vehicle. While on paper the German luxury brands also have lots of bells and whistles, it's only on paper. Try finding mostly loaded German luxury cars on dealers' lots. They are rare and if you find one it's probably not in the color you want. You pretty much have to custom order a German luxury car if you want one fairly loaded because there are few on the lots. I started looking at Genesis for this reason. I have a plethora of loaded GV70s to choose from around me. I can not only find a loaded GV70 but also one with my choice of color, both exterior and interior. I'm just not paying for a Mercedes, Audi or BMW and driving off the lot with a vehicle that comes with no more bells and whistles than a Honda Civic. I don't want to be "that guy".
    Nowhere is this more apparent than on the used car market where custom ordering is not an option. A year ago we were looking at used luxury SUVs. We test drove a 2017 GLE. It didn't even have rear parking sensors!!! Perhaps Genesis will win some converts on the used car market too.

Also, people that like the Hyundai Santa Fe could easily make the jump to the base model of the GV70 vs a Limited or Calligraphy trim on the Santa Fe, and still get the 10 yr warranty and they will pick up your car from your house to take it to the location where they fix your car and bring it back. I do want something I can haul my family from the valley up to the ski life or the mountain reservoirs on the weekends. I want something that will be reliable as I don't lease and I buy and hold for 10 - 15 years. So the interior/exterior design needs to be solid and that 3.5TT platform is highly attractive as I hate the turbo 4 in crossovers. I was originally a fan of the RDX and awaiting the Type S RDX but that TLX Type S was such a disappointment in price/performance that I expect it will carryover into their SUVs.

    The first week of driving this car I got stuck in traffic on the way to work and the car automatically started giving me a massage. A welcomed surprise. Its soo intuitive! I think the massage features kicks in after an hour of driving! Awesome!
    I'm getting so much attention. 2-5 compliments per day. One couple walked from all the way up the street to look at the car. They thought it was a Bentley at first lol.
    Fuel economy is my only complaint. It's not horrible but wish it was better. That's the only reason this car is 9/10 for me and not a perfect 10/10. I mostly work from home and head into the office twice a week so it's not a big deal. But I'm looking forward to great road trips in this car. The ride is soo smooth and quiet in comfort mode. This car literally reads the road and signs. Talk about tech! And gets aggressive in Sport+ when I want to show off. Best of all worlds!!! The best in the segment. To me anyway. I would take this easily over Germans.

    Who's gonna buy it? Intelligent people who do proper research on vehicles and who aren't consumed with a name plate. This thing has sales hit written all over it.

      You overestimate how many actually "smart" people are there. Or at least those that do a research.
      Still, I believe Genesis will break through because it looks SO MUCH better in person! The more of them will get around - the more will want to buy them.

    • @tri3pleagent
      @tri3pleagent 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rosgoncharuk2403 If I've overestimated either of those things, the vehicle won't be around long. That won't be the case. I think Genesis has done enough here with what this thing offers that they'll turn heads and win over some brand snobs. This thing is a winner by practically all counts.

    • @DiscoFang
      @DiscoFang 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you think buying Genesis isn't all about brand you don't get it. And in both directions. Buying because it's specifically NOT something else is the self conscious version of brand snobbery. The worst part of it is the vocalizing it to others. Lexus forums are full of the exact same sentiments.

    FYI, that IS real carbon fiber. It's a particular style of twill weave CF that I used to use back when I made custom pocket knives. That stuff is UBER expensive, I was shocked when I saw how much of it they were using, that can't be economical.

    The good thing about Genesis right now is that they offer vehicles that have some color saturation.

    Test drove it the other day. It’s plush, comfortable, quiet and classy inside... A nice place to be in. I would not call this vehicle sporty or fun to drive though. Felt alittle heavy to me.

    I switched from BMW to Genesis just because of it’s value for money. I love it so far and I agree that there is still lot to do as far as brand marketing goes. But trust me this is a drop dead gorgeous amazing car

    Never thought Korean cars would excite me this much! As a former BMW owner, I’d prefer to drive this over anything in this segment. Interior space is very warm and inviting as a nice warm bread fresh out of the oven with butter!! Wow. We went into test drive IONIQ 5 and test drove 3.5T and what a dilemma!!! Just an amazing beauty & the beast at the same time!!
    Thank you for a great review and reassuring my emotional experience!!

    New Genesis products are looking good. But like you've pointed out, I think for the brand to start capturing more sales, they need a better customer experience from a dealership standpoint. Customers used to buying luxury cars have the "luxury" experience and if you find out you have to go to the Kia/Hyundai dealership, that may be a dealbreaker for some customers in that segment.
